Sunday, April 18, Worship Services

April 18 Christian Education

  • Contemporaries: “Applications of the Belhar Confession,” led by Rev. Bush. The struggle against apartheid in South Africa produced many documents of faith, including the Belhar Confession (September 1986). A product of the Dutch Reformed Mission Church, it’s something that churches in our Reformed Church are considering for inclusion in the Book of Confessions. We’ll discuss the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa and issues related to American social policies of injustice. Second floor parlor.
  • Journey with Scripture: Acts 9:1–6, (7-20); Ps. 30; Rev. 5:11–14; John 21:1–19. Led by Jan Irvin. Second floor library.
  • Parenting Circle: We continue reading 365 Meditations for Families. First floor, Harambe room.
  • Seekers: “The Warm Heart of Africa,” led by Elder Peta Harrigan-Cole Hear about Peta’s mission trip to our sister church, Balaka CCAP, in Malawi. Second floor, room 234.
  • Soul Food, a new adult class offering, led by the Rev. Cynthia Jackson. April’s theme is “the little Easters” ... those moments when something that has died in me is raised to life again. We will continue our study Joyce Rupp’s book Fresh Bread. (Please bring a journal.) Copies of Fresh Bread are available to purchase in class. Second floor, pastor’s conference room.

  • Stained glass windowTaizé prayer service: Every Wednesday, 7:00 pm in the Chapel. Join us for a simple supper at 6:00 pm. Childcare available from 6:45 pm to 8:15 pm. April 14 Taizé service will be followed at 8:15 with music on the labyrinth. Led by Charles Anderson.
  • Labyrinth Prayer Walk: Wednesday April 14, 10:00 am - 9:00 pm; Monday, April 19, 10 am - 3pm. In the Social Hall.
  • Centering Prayer: Tuesday, April 20, 7:00 pm. Room 250.

Youth and Young Adults

  • Club One Sixteen, April 14: Join us from 3:30 to 5:00 for homework and open gym, 5:00 - 5:30 for a simple supper, and 5:30 - 7:00 for bible study.
  • Youth basketball: For young men, grades 9–12; Saturday evening April 17, from 6 - 8 pm. In the gym.
  • The Easter ExperienceSpring Young Adult Series beginning April 14: When the Easter celebrations have come and gone, we are left with the question: So what now? All young adults in their 20s and 30s are invited to join us for a 5 week DVD-driven bible study entitled The Easter Experience. Together we’ll be asking: “What if what happened then changes everything now?” Join us on Wednesdays at 8 pm in Room 234. This week’s topic: My Life Has a Purpose.
  • Young adults in their 20’s and 30’s (married, single, partnered, with or without children) to join them at Oh Yeahs! (232 S Highland Ave) on Sundays, April 18 and 25 for fellowship and ice cream.

Race: The Power of An IllusionRace: The Power of An Illusion: January 16
As part of our ongoing commitment to bridge the racial divide and build community, ELPC is collaborating with Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church to offer the series Race: The Power of an Illusion. This PBS documentary, originally shown in 2003, has been developed into a series for use in community groups, schools and faith communities. A potluck supper at 5:30 pm will precede each video segment and small group discussion. Last session (April 17) at Grace Memorial Presbyterian Church. View the discussion guide on PBS’ site.

Blood pressure screeningsFree blood pressure screenings, April 18, 12:15
Free blood pressure screenings will be available after the April 18 Sanctuary worship service. This service is usually offered every third Sunday. First floor library.

Knitting Group, April 15, 1-2:30 pmKnitting group

Children’s artwork needed!Collect medicines for Haiti
Calling all parents who are members or friends! We are planning an exhibit of photos, drawings, and paintings from the children and young people of ELPC members and friends for Pentecost Sunday. All artwork will be gently handled and available for you to pick up after the show. On each piece, please include parent name and phone #, and child’s name and age. Bulky items are OK, too. Put your item(s) in a bag clearly labeled for Phil Jamison and bring them to the office no later than May 15.

Medicines for HaitiCollect medicines for Haiti
The Functional Literacy Ministry of Haiti is collecting infant pain reliever drops, infant vitamin drops, and adult pain relievers. Thank you very much for your support! Please leave donations in the Haiti box in the church office.

Special Mother’s Day Cards on sale!
Honor your mother this year with a specially designed Mother’s Day Presbyterian Women Mothers Day cardscard to support Healthy Women Healthy Families. Your donations for Mother’s Day cards will help safeguard and improve the lives of women and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Malawi and southern Sudan.  This project supports malaria prevention, family health education, primary care, health screenings and immunizations for children, and obstetrical care, fistula surgery and cervical cancer screening for women. A donation of $10 is suggested but donations of any amount will be cheerfully received. Cards are available following the 11 am worship service and from Kate Carlson in the church office during the week.

 


 

ELPC in the Community

Clean upSpring clean-up in the Hill District, April 17
KEYS AmeriCorps and Duquesne University are teaming up for a Spring Clean-Up in the Hill District. They need volunteers on April 17 from 9 am to 4 pm to help. Lunch is provided. Registration will be all day at the Blakey Center (1908 Wylie Ave). Reservations are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) Food Pantry
The EECM Food Pantry provides food for individuals and families facing hunger in Pittsburgh. April’s “Food of the Month” is pasta sauce.

East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) Men’s Shelter
During the month of April, the Deacons are collecting bar soap and shampoo for EECM’s Men’s Shelter. Donations may be left in the hallway baskets. Thank you for your support!
