Spotlight
Spiritual Life retreat, August 5; Book Discussions, Tuesdays, August 7 - 28
Retreat: On Sunday August 5, join the Spiritual Life Committee for a Sabbath Mini-Retreat, from 8 - 10 am. Come away together for a time of prayer and quiet reflection as we prepare for worship and celebration of the Lord’s supper.
Classes: Beginning August 7 and continuing on Tuesdays through August 28, join us from 6-7pm for a book discussion of The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel. While Heschel writes as a Jewish scholar, his understanding of Sabbath provides a context for us to begin to place the practice of sabbath within the structure of our own lives. Childcare available.

News and events
Read the August Reaching Out newsletter
The August Reaching Out newsletter includes articles on exploring a sabbath practice, great photos and notes from a successful VCS, new businesses in our growing and vibrant East Liberty neighborhood, news from the congregation, and Rev. Schoenewolf’s Pastoral Letter: “Yet it is a word that in reality takes on little meaning in our contemporary lives. Modern amenities, such as 24-hour grocery stores and smart phones, make sabbath more of a sought-after hope than a daily, weekly, or even monthly reality.” Read more
Young Adults at the Turkish Cultural Center of Pittsburgh (TCCP)
TRAIL goes interfaith Friday, August 3 at 7pm for the YAM’s monthly “First Friday” program, held this month @ the TCCP. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” We join our new friends from the Turkish Cultural Center of Pittsburgh who will host us for an evening including fellowship, treats and coffee. This “neighbor-themed” coffeehouse asks participants to bring a poem, song, reading, scripture passage, or anything to share with the group focused on the theme of being a good neighbor, as well as to bring a dessert to share. Dinner will be graciously provided by our hosts after sundown. Free childcare available.
Neighbors mission opportunity, Saturday August 4
Join us on Saturday, August 4 as we partner with Open Hand Ministries and Garfield Community Farm for a work day of fellowship, fun and projects! Spend a half day or whole day doing projects in the garden or at the house we are rehabbing in East Liberty. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Please contact Emily Rosenthal (412) 963-0139, ejr116@gmail.com, or view the Mission events page for more information.
