Welcome back, Rev. Randy Bush!

Rev. Bush and family, New Zealand, 2012We are glad to welcome back our Senior Pastor, Rev. Randy Bush, as he and his family have returned safely from New Zealand. Rev. Bush was on a three-month sabbatical in Auckland where he studied theology and piano at the University of Auckland. View the September and October Reaching Out newsletters for stories from Rev. Bush about his time away. Rev. Bush formally returns to the office this week, and will preach at Journey and our Sanctuary services on Sunday October 21. Following the 11:00 service, please join us for a Welcome Back reception to honor Rev. Bush and his family! We look forward to hearing about this Sabbath season in their lives.

  • Contemporaries: “Extraordinary Ordinary” with Lenore Williams. "My vote won't count," "One person can't make a difference," "Who would listen to me?" We have heard and often said these words. But in reality, we have power that is waiting to be brought forth. God has called ordinary people to do extraordinary things by touching our souls. Second floor parlor.
  • Journey with Scripture: Job 38:1-7 (34-41); Psalms 104:1-9, 24, 35c; Hebrews 5:1-10; Mark 10:35-45. Second floor library.
  • Parenting Circle: First floor, Harambe Room.
  • Seekers: “Who are the Sikhs, and what do they believe?” In remembrance of the recent Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin, come to class to show your support for our local Sikh community. With Chitratan Singh Sethi, executive committee member for the Pittsburgh Sikh Gurdwara. Room 234.
  • Soul Food: On October 21 we will begin discussing You Gave Me a Wide Place: Holy Places of Our Lives, by Paul E. Stroble. Pastor’s Conference Room, second floor.

Worship and prayer opportunities during the week

  • Centering Prayer: Every Tuesday, 7:00pm. Second floor library.
  • Labyrinth prayer walk: Every Monday from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, and every Wednesday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. In the Sanctuary.
  • Taizé prayer service. Every Wednesday at 7pm, in the Chapel. The hour-long service includes sung prayers, simple, beautiful music, a time of silence, spoken and silent prayers, and opportunity for individual prayer. This Wednesday, October 17, join us for a special service honoring Domestic Violence Awareness.

If you’re interested in becoming a member, or joining the church as a friend, learn what it means to become a member or friend of ELPC by attending our next Inquirers’ classes. These two-session classes are a great chance to hear from church members and our pastoral staff about what it means to be a person of faith, and the ministry and vision of our church. Rev. Dr. Randy Bush in piano concertRev. Bush in Concert! | Sunday, October 28, 5pm

The Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will be joined by violinist Tami Osborne Pederson, violist David Seward, and cellist Mary Amrhein-May in a performance of Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G Minor, KV 478 on Sunday, Oct 28 at 5 pm in the Sanctuary. In addition, Dr. Bush will play solo piano works by Chopin, Scriabin, and Villa-Lobos. This concert is part of the 2012-2013 Cathedral Concerts series, and is free! A freewill offering will be accepted.


Trained User of the Kitchen (TUK) Program Training, October 21

KitchenThe Trained User of the Kitchen (TUK) program is for individuals and members of groups from ELPC who utilize the main church kitchen for anything. An hour-long TUK training will include where to find things, set up and clean up, how to use equipment, and more. When groups or individuals request to use the church kitchen, at least one TUK must be present. Sunday, October 21, after the 11:00 service. Meet in the church kitchen. Halloween Mayhem at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater 2012Hope Acadey in Halloween Mayhem | Saturday, October 27, 10am–2pm

Hope Academy’s HATCo, our very own Teen Theater Company, will perform Halloween Hits at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater’s 4th Annual “Halloween Mayhem,” a day of activities designed to delight and entertain the whole family. The EECM Food Pantry provides food for individuals and families facing hunger in Pittsburgh. October’s “Food of the Month” is Stuffing Mix.

East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) Men’s Shelter
During the fall months, the Deacons will continue to collect men’s toothpaste, shampoo, and flip flops/shower shoes for EECM’s Men’s Shelter. Donations may be left in the hallway baskets. Thank you for your support!
