Spotlights
Marathon Weekend Worship! Join us Saturday May 4, 5pm
Our Journey and Sanctuary worship services will be combined and moved to Saturday evening, May 4, at 5pm, due to Marathon road closures. We hope that you will join us for worship, followed by a potluck dinner! Runners participating in The Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday morning May 5 will be on the city streets from about 7am to about 2pm. View the website for route and road closure details. The course winds through many of the city neighborhoods and crosses all three rivers. Due to the street closures, on Sunday morning May 5, only the Good Samaritan service will be offered; CE classes are canceled. Our regular Sunday schedule will resume on May 12.
Church Tour, May 4 at 4pm (before the 5pm service)
Enjoy the beauty of ELPC architecture, learn unknown facts about its history, and view seldom seen corners of the first and second floors. On Saturday, May 4th, a small-group tour will be available at 4 pm, prior to the 5 pm Worship hour. Join the group at the hospitality area at the Highland Street entrance, 4 pm sharp! Questions? Sign up for Saturday potluck on Marathon weekend
Due to the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday, May 5, ELPC will hold worship on Saturday, May 4 at 5 pm with a potluck dinner after the service. Much help from the congregation is needed to make this event a success! Consider setting up, bringing a side dish, bringing a dessert and/or cleaning up. Sign up sheets outside the east transept!
East End Choral Festival, May 5 2013, 4pm
Mark your calendars for the East End Choral Festival on Sunday, May 5 at 4 pm! (Note this is the same day as the Pittsburgh Marathon but the streets will be open by the afternoon.) The combined choirs of ELPC, Shadyside Presbyterian, Calvary Episcopal and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Churches will be featured! Our guest conductor will be David Hill from London, conductor of the BBC Singers and the Bach Choir of London. This free event is part of the Cathedral Concerts series.
Worship services, Marathon Weekend, May 4-5

- Saturday, May 4, 5pm, Rev. Heather Schoenewolf preaching: “Guide My Feet,” Luke 15:11-24.
Join us for a special evening service combining our Sanctuary and Journey worship services. The Journey Worship music leaders will be our musicians, and we also will celebrate the ELPC members participating in the Marathon! All are invited to stay after the service for a potluck dinner; please sign up to bring a side dish or dessert. In the Social Hall.
- Sunday, May 5, 8am: Good Samaritan: Rev. Randy Bush preaching. (In the ground floor Dining Room.) With Celebration of the Lord’s Supper.

More worship and prayer opportunities during the week
- Centering Prayer: Centering Prayer meets every Tuesday evenings. Join us next week, May 7, 7:00pm! Newcomers welcome. (Meets in the second floor Library.)
Labyrinth prayer walk: Come away from the hectic and busy for some quiet, prayerful moments with God: Join us Mondays from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm; or Wednesdays, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
- Prayer Room: Come to sit and pray in silence. Come to listen for the still small voice of God. In the midst of all the good that we do here at ELPC, this quiet space comes alongside to bear witness to who we are as a people of prayer. The room is open anytime the church is open.
- Taizé prayer service: Every Wednesday at 7pm, in the Chapel. The hour-long service includes sung, spoken, and silent prayers, beautiful music, a time of silence, and opportunity for individual prayer. Join us after the service on Wednesday May 1 for a special Violin Recital with Lisa Joseph, who will be participating in a medical mission trip to Indonesia this summer with International Medical Relief.

Peter Yarrow in Concert! Sunday, May 12 at 7 pm, benefits Hope Academy
In the early 1960s the music of Peter, Paul and Mary awakened a generation to activism and idealism. As a performer and social activist, Peter Yarrow continues to use music to inspire and bring people together to create a more just, peaceful and compassionate world. This concert is a celebration of his music and lifelong commitment to making positive social change. Click poster to see full size. The concert will take place in the beautiful sanctuary of ELPC. Hope Academy’s teen theater company (HAT Co) will open the concert by performing contemporary songs with social justice themes. Read more
Presbyterian Women Bible Study, May 7, 10am “Brothers & Sisters in Harmony” (1 John 2-4; Jude 17-25)
The General Epistles (1 and 2 Peter, 1-3 John and Jude) were meant to inspire and comfort the faithful in first century Asia Minor, and they continue to speak to us today as we seek to live in community as disciples of Christ. Join us for bible study at 10am. A potluck lunch follows. Please bring a salad or snack to share. Beverages will be provided. Meets in the Second Floor Parlor.
Mother's Day cards on sale May 4
Honor your mother or other beloved woman in your life with a specially-designed Mothers Day card to improve the lives of women and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Malawi and the Republic of South Sudan. Cards are offered by Presbyterian Women and may be purchased following 11 A.M. worship on April 21 and 28, during the fellowship time before worship on Saturday, May 4 (Marathon weekend), or from Kate Carlson in the church office during the week.
Young Adults (YAM) First Friday @ Station Square, May 3, 7pm
TRAIL is spending First Friday at Station Square on Friday, May 3 at 7 pm at Joe’s Crab Shack. As the weather gets warmer, TRAIL will enjoy an evening dining by the dancing fountain. Come join the group for dinner at Joe’s and stay to enjoy some fun at Station Square. TRAIL is a young adult group welcoming folks from different churches and neighborhoods within the Pittsburgh area. All are welcome! Read more

Six members from East Liberty Presbyterian Church joined with 16 volunteers from the Carlisle Presbytery for work with residents of Point Pleasant, N.J., through Lend A Hand, a PC(USA) mission. The EECM Food Pantry provides food for individuals and families facing hunger in Pittsburgh. April’s “Food of the Month” is peanut butter.
East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) Men’s Shelter
The Deacons are collecting men’s underwear, deodorant, and shower flip-flops for EECM’s Men’s Shelter. Donations may be left in the hallway baskets. Thank you for your support!
