Justice and Global Concerns The ministry of the Justice & Global
Concerns (J&GC) Committee of East Liberty Presbyterian Church believes
that God calls us to encourage and facilitate the active participation
of all church members and friends in community, national and global
mission. Therefore, they are:
|
committed to .
. providing education on issues of world peace,
justice and economic development.
committed to .
. . providing congregational awareness, study and
support of the global mission of the Presbyterian
Church (USA) and of the denomination’s position on
social justice.
committed to .
. .developing and funding a vibrant program on World
Mission and to interpreting it.
committed to .
. .strengthening and building international linkages
with sister churches and mission programs in
developing nations, such as Guatemala, Pakistan and
Malawi.
Major J&GC Activities
Many of J&GC’s efforts
emanate from various taskforces which spring up around
specific issues or concerns. They involve committee
members as well as others from the ELPC congregation.
Environmental Taskforce. This
group is dedicated to environmental justice issues and projects,
such as Earth Day and recycling, that help us improve our
stewardship of God’s gift of nature.
Full Inclusion Taskforce. This
is an outgrowth of ELPC’s discernment process on whether to become a
More Light Church. The task force is an affirmation of ELPC’s
commitment to welcome gays, lesbians, transsexuals and transgendered
people into our ELPC community and works to promote the full
inclusion and service of all people in Pittsburgh Presbytery and the
Presbyterian Church (USA).
Gun Violence Prevention.
This group focuses on addressing the issues surrounding
gun violence in our local and larger communities.

changing the systems that perpetuate poverty and assisting local
families.
Women & Children Taskforce.
This group shares a deep concern for the well being of women and
children, especially those whose lives are impacted by poverty,
violence and equal access to the world’s resources. Through
educational events, advocacy work and direct service, the group
seeks to impact the lives of women and children in positive ways.
Other. We also partner with
other ELPC ministries and programs throughout the year in support of
or to co-sponsor special events and ELPC mission-related projects.

J&GC Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer opportunities are generally
short term and revolve around current events or projects of the
committee, such as: work groups traveling to Mississippi to work in
areas affected by Hurricane Katrina; volunteer escorts to accompany
Muslim youth on field trips to local cultural attractions.
Justice & Global Concern Committee
Co-Chairs: Michele Bossers and Dick Headley
Note: The Justice & Global
Concerns Committee meets the first Tuesday of each month and welcomes
all who are interested in learning more about our mission and who have
an “activist streak” in them.

Let Your Voice Be Heard
As
citizens we have not only the right, but responsibility to express
our opinions about the workings of our government.
Become aware of the issues before the
legislature. Write your representatives to let them know how you
wish to be represented.
If we stand by silently and watch our
country led into ways with which we do not agree, we only have our
quiet selves to blame.
Be aware and speak out! |
