SUMMARY:Educational Session on Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Homelessness and affordable housing are discussions that draw much attention and outrage in the East End\, as well as in the City of Pittsburgh as a whole—and rightfully so. We are called to care for the most vulnerable among us\, those who are without the necessities that so many of us have. \nPlease join the Mission Board and Mission Committees as we learn about homelessness in our community\, the new referral process for shelter assistance by Allegheny County\, and the national move to the “Housing First” model. \nOur guests will include Abigail Horn from the Allegheny County Department of Human Service.

His performances with numerous ensembles have included the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, the Orpheus Ensemble\, Chanticleer\, and the Empire Brass. For more than twenty years the San Francisco Symphony featured his holiday organ recitals at Davies Symphony Hall\, and now the Los Angeles Philharmonic/Hollywood Bowl continues that tradition each year at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. \nMr. Higgs performs\, teaches\, and adjudicates at festivals and competitions throughout the world\, including the International Organ Festivals and Competitions of Bremen\, Germany; the Leipzig Bach Competition\, Germany; the Gottfried Silbermann Competition in Freiberg\, Germany; Calgary\, Canada; Dublin\, Ireland; Odense\, Denmark; Varzi\, Italy; Redlands and San Anselmo\, California; and the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival. He earned the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at the Manhattan School of Music\, and the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. His teachers have included Claire Coci\, Peter Hurford\, Russell Saunders\, and Frederick Swann. He was appointed to the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music upon graduation from that institution\, and has been a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music since 1992. His students have won prizes in prestigious international competitions\, and hold important positions in leading academic and religious institutions. \nMr. Higgs has recorded for Delos International\, Pro Organo\, Arsis\, Loft\, and Gothic records.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Indigenous Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:Nationalism Redefined: In this election year\, there has been a rise in so-called nationalism in our country—a call to return to the loyalty and devotion upon which the U.S. was established; a sense of consciousness that exalts the U.S. above all other countries and emphasizes the promotion of culture and superiority. However\, America was not discovered\, as the land was already inhabited when the Europeans arrived. A true return to nationalism would be a return to the indigenous people’s way of life\, culture\, and restoration of their land. \nIn recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day (this year on Monday\, October 10)\, the Mission Board will present Indigenous Pittsburgh: Christian Doctrine\, Small Pox Blankets\, and Native Populations. This presentation will provide a foundational framework for understanding U.S. policy and beliefs toward native populations and how they impacted our local history and treatment of natives. A light lunch will be served.

SUMMARY:Lunch with the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Mission Board has entered into a collaborative interfaith relationship of learning and friendship with the members of the local Muslim community. Many of the gatherings have been offered at the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh (ICP)\, where people of all faiths have been greeted with warm hospitality and a genuine desire to get to know and support one another. \nNow\, we have an opportunity to return the same radical hospitality that we have received from our sisters and brothers at ICP. On Sun.\, Aug. 21\, members of ICP will join us for worship in the Courtyard and lunch in the Social Hall. Following lunch\, Kelcey Sharkas\, outreach coordinator at ICP\, will facilitate a seminar\, entitled “How to Be a Muslim Ally.” \nThe Mission Board cordially invites and encourages all ELPC members and friends to offer a warm\, radically hospitable welcome to our guests and to extend their Sunday at church by participating in lunch and the seminar. \nFor more information\, contact Michele Bossers or Pastor Patrice. \n“God is love\, and those who abide in love abide in God\, and God abides in them.”—1 John 4:16

SUMMARY:The Search for Truth about Islam
DESCRIPTION:Join Michele Bossers as she leads a book study on Ben Daniel’s The Search for Truth about Islam\, sponsored by the Justice Committee. The book is available for $10 online\, and two copies can be found in the ELPC Library. \nIn his book\, Presbyterian pastor Ben Daniel tackles common stereotypes and misconceptions that tend to define Islam in the popular imagination. Daniel also looks at Christianity’s own history of violence and explores what he calls “the American cult of fear\,” particularly as it relates to the rise of Islamophobia in the United States. Blending travel narrative\, interviews\, and well-crafted storytelling\, Daniel helps debunk the myths and put a human face on Islam in America. \n“Those looking for a basic introduction and a refutation of common stereotypes will welcome Daniel’s straightforward prose and friendly\, approachable tone.” —Publishers Weekly

SUMMARY:Far from the Tree Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Far from the Tree: Parents\, Children\, and the Search for Identity\, explores what it’s like for parents of children who are profoundly different or likely to be stigmatized—children with Down syndrome\, deafness\, autism\, dwarfism\, or who are prodigies\, become criminals\, or are conceived in rape. \nThough these experiences can be difficult and isolating for families\, Solomon writes about parents who have accepted their children in spite of conditions others might consider tragic. “We all love flawed children and the general assumption that these more extreme flaws make their children somehow unlovable—it wasn’t true of most of my experience\,” Solomon tells Fresh Air’s Terry Gross. \nBook copies are available in the ELPC Library or your local bookstore. Read one chapter or all of them\, and join us for discussion! \nFor details\, contact Carol Chonoska at 724.272.9722 or carolchonoska@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:"Cram Jam" Church Tour
DESCRIPTION:Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation—in conjunction with ELPC\, St. Charles Lawanga Parish at Holy Rosary Church\, and Calvary Episcopal Church—invites the public to participate in Cram Jam. The free event offers tours of three area churches designed by renowned architect Ralph Adams Cram. Explore and experience their remarkable beauty. \nChurch docents and PHLF staff will provide information and lead tours at each site. Within breathtaking architectural spaces\, participants will see remarkable sculpture\, stained glass\, and woodwork by exceptional American craftsmen and artists. Please arrive at each church as follows: \n\n1 pm: St. Charles Lawanga Parish at Holy Rosary Church (1926–31)\, 7114 Kelly Street in Homewood\n2 pm: East Liberty Presbyterian Church (1930–35)\, 116 South Highland Avenue in East Liberty\n3:30 pm: Calvary Episcopal Church (1905–07)\, 315 Shady Avenue in Shadyside. Here\, Philip Maye\, chair of the Calvary Architectural History Committee\, will unveil an interpretive plaque honoring architect Ralph Adams Cram; Al Tannler\, PHLF’s historical collections director\, will give brief comments about the architect; and Dr. Alan Lewis\, organist\, will perform the Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor\, by J. S. Bach. A wine-and-cheese reception will follow in the Parish Hall\, concluding at 5:30 pm.\n\nParticipants must provide their own transportation (car\, bus\, bike) to each church. Each location is accessible by bus; call the Port Authority at 412.442.2000 for details. Reservations are appreciated by April 14. Contact either PHLF (marylu@phlf.org; 412.471.5808 x527) or Calvary Episcopal Church (lwells@calvarypgh.org; 412.661.0120\, x110). \nThe Architect\nRalph Adams Cram\, the son of a Unitarian minister\, was born in 1863 in Hampshire Falls\, New Hampshire. By the time he was 17\, Cram would already have developed a keen interest in architecture leading him to a five-year architectural apprenticeship with the Boston firm Rotch & Tilden. It was also during this time that Cram would begin his second career as a writer by composing pieces for the Boston Evening Telegraph. In 1889 Cram established his own architectural firm with Charles F. Wentworth. Cram & Wentworth was succeeded in 1892 by Cram\, Wentworth & Goodhue (with Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue)\, and in 1897 by Cram\, Goodhue & Ferguson (with Frank W. Ferguson). In 1903\, CG&F opened a New York office under Bertram Goodhue’s direction. Ten years later\, Goodhue established his own firm in New York and Cram’s Boston firm became Cram & Ferguson. \nCram\, an Episcopalian convert\, is best known for his church architecture although he also designed a handful of residential and collegiate buildings throughout his career. Cram’s style would come to be known as American Gothic and was inspired by twelfth-century ecclesiastical building construction innovations such as the pointed arch and the flying buttress. These innovations allowed for buildings with great height and window openings of unparalleled size. Cram used these tools to create\, in his own words\, “…old principles recovered\, the old materials matched and recalled\, the old craft necessarily regained\, but with a certain modernism that insures vitality and contemporaneousness.”1 \n1 Ralph Adams Cram\, “Foreword\,” The Art of Stained Glass: a note on the work of Henry Wynd Young\, worker in glass\, mosaic\, church decoration\, 314 East 34th Street\, New York\, by Walter E. Wheeler. (Printed privately for Henry Wynd Young\, 1921)
