DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of Diversity on the Eve of the Women’s March on Washington\nLet’s make things together. Eat together. Sing together. March together. Learn how to support each other and  empower those who have been marginalized – especially during the recent Presidential campaign – people of color\, immigrants\, women\, the LGBT community\, Muslims\, people with disabilities and survivors of sexual assault. \nDonations will be accepted to support the work of our artists and our social justice partners\, The ACLU and Thomas Merton Center. \n5:30 to 7:00 pm     Social Justice Art-Making\, Education and Organizing \nMake a poster for the Solidarity March (at 7 pm). We will hand these off to folks going to the Million Women March the next day. Paint a mural. Write letters. Learn how to contact and talk to your members of Congress. Eat tacos (from Blue Sparrow food truck) and desserts from the bake sale (yes\, you can contribute to the bake sale too\, if you’d like!). We will add participating organizations to this list as they are confirmed. \n6:00 to 7:00 pm     Poetry Reading by Words Without Walls \nWords Without Walls is a creative partnership between the Chatham MFA Creative Writing Program\, Allegheny County Jail\, State Correctional Institution Pittsburgh\, and Sojourner House\, a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility for mothers and their children. \n7:00 to 7:30 pm     Solidarity on the Square March \nWe will gather on the Whitfield side of the building\, across from Ace Hotel\, and march through East Liberty\, raising our posters\, voices and giant puppets in solidarity. \n7:30 to 9:00 pm     Peace\, Love and All That Jazz Performances \n“Art is a weapon in the struggle for ideas\, the class struggle.” — Amiri Baraka \n\nAnqwenique Wingfield and her band\, Kinectic\nKinetic performs songs immersed in the tropical sounds and rhythms of West Africa\, blended with contemporary jazz and R&B. ‘World of Wonder’\, the debut CD\, is available on iTunes\, Amazon\, and CDBaby. \nGizeLxanath and Ben Barson with the Afro-Yaqui Music Collective\nArt is Never Neutral in the struggle for a new world. James Nova \nEast Liberty Presbyterian Church\, The Brass Roots\, and organist Dr. Edward Alan Moore join forces for a sonic spectacular of music for brass and organ. The concert will open with the iconic sounds of Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra (featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey). Also featured will be arrangements of music from Star Trek\, Star Wars\, and Superman by Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra trombonist James Nova. Mr. Nova will be the guest conductor of the concert. \nThe Brass Roots is the brass ensemble in residence at East Liberty Presbyterian Church.  They are heard during Sunday morning worship six times throughout the year and are featured on two concerts each season\, including the most anticipated concert of the season\, Christmas in East Liberty. \nThis performance is free and open to the public.  A freewill offering will be received. A Fulbright scholar\, Caroline spent the 2013-14 school year in Toulouse\, France\, where she studied at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional under Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen (organ)\, as well as Yasuko Bouvard (harpsichord). Caroline is the First Prize winner of the 11th Annual Albert Schweitzer Organ Festival (2008) and in the Tenth Annual West Chester University Organ Competition (2010). \nAmanda Mole is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate studying with Prof. David Higgs. In 2011\, she graduated from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and the School of Music with a Master of Music degree in Organ Performance and Sacred Music. Amanda is the first-place and audience prize winner of the 2016 Miami International Organ Competition\, and the first-place winner of the 2014 Arthur Poister Organ Competition\, the 2014 John Rodland Memorial Organ Competition\, and the 2014 Peter B. Knock Award. \nA native of Croatia\, Ivan Bosnar studies organ performance with Prof. Nathan Laube and improvisation with Prof. Edoardo Bellotti. DESCRIPTION:A poignant choral movement of the full CASOP: A Requiem for Rice composition\, by Dr. Trevor Weston\, conducted by Thomas Douglas and performed by Colour of Music Festival Chorale.  The full piece will debut in its entirety on February 13\, 2019 at Carnegie Music Hall. \nUNDERSTANDING CASOP: THE REQUIEM FOR RICE by Edda L. Fields-Black\, Ph. D.\, Executive Producer & Librettist\nfrom the Requiem for Rice website \nThe Requiem for Rice was originally conceived of as a modern take on a classic requiem—in the spirit of Verdi\, Mozart\, Faure\, and Britten—that mourns the souls of the enslaved who died on Lowcountry rice plantations\, their bodies unburied\, their suffering unmourned\, and their sacrifices unmarked for future generations.  As Trevor began to compose\, I completed the first draft of the libretto\, and we began collaboration on arranging the lyrics\, we began to feel as if something was missing. The requiem genre from the European classical music tradition provided a vehicle for the piece to lament and mourn the sacrifices and sufferings of Africans enslaved on Lowcountry rice plantations; but\, it left no room to protest the injustices of enslavement\, exploitation\, and terror\, a commercial agricultural system built on the backs of people stolen from West Africa’s Upper Guinea Coast\, African genius\, African bodies\, African labor\, African tears.  We thought\, there had to be a RECKONING before the REQUIEM.  Casop: A Requiem for Rice was born. \nCASOP is pronounced kəsəp; both the “a” and “o” in casop are pronounced like the initial “a” in “cassava” or the “u” in “custard.”\nCasop is a funerary tradition among the Diola-Fogny\, quintessential rice farmers along the Casamance River of present-day Senegal.  In the event of untimely\, accidental\, and suspicious deaths\, Diola-Fogny ritual specialists performed casop\, a “ritual interrogation of the corpse” via spirit possession.  During the funeral\, the deceased was asked to tell his or her story about the circumstances of death.  Once the truth was revealed\, the dead would be buried and harmony and peace restored to the community. \nIn Casop: A Requiem for Rice\, tens of thousands enslaved laborers on the Lowcountry’s rice plantations and 12 million Africans who endured the Middle Passage\, many of whom died untimely\, accidental\, and suspicious deaths\, will speak.  Once the dead have told their story\, the lamentation will turn to celebration of the critical role enslaved Africans’ ingenuity\, technology\, and industry played in the economy of the US South\, laying to rest once and for all\, the shackles of shame\, blame\, guilt\, and denial that pervade this painful period in our nation’s history.  Casop: A Requiem for Rice reclaims African and African-American history and fosters reconciliation. \nA true marriage between West African and European classical traditions\, Casop: A Requiem for Rice is an African-American inspired take on a classic requiem.  By telling the stories of Africans enslaved on Lowcountry rice plantations\, Casop becomes a new genre\, the vehicle through which oppressed and voiceless peoples from around the world can tell their stories\, mourn their dead\, and celebrate their contributions to the world. \nThe Box office opens July 15th for the September 21\, 2018 “Casop: A Requiem for Rice” Choral Performance and September 22 Colour of Music Festival’s “Casop: A Requiem for Rice” Black Classical Renaissance Benefit Performance. They draw from a diverse repertoire\, including works originally for piano and orchestra; works original to piano and organ; their own transcriptions; and solo offerings. \nFormed in 2013\, The Arsenal Duo made their debut performance at Youngstown\, Ohio’s historic Stambaugh Auditorium\, where they attracted one of the largest audiences since the restoration of the hall’s E.M. Skinner pipe organ. The duo returned to Stambaugh to record several tracks for a forthcoming recording. They have also been presented at Pittsburgh’s East Liberty Presbyterian Church and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral\, Christ Episcopal Church in Warren\, Ohio\, and National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. \nThe 2015-2016 season had the duo playing concerts in Colorado\, Virginia\, Ohio\, Illinois\, Michigan\, and Pennsylvania. The 2016-2017 season includes concerts in New Canaan\, CT\, Wilson College in Chambersburg\, PA\, Dearborn\, MI\, Tarentum\, PA\, and an invitation to return to Stambaugh Auditorium on July 3\, 2017 as featured performers for the Great Lakes Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists. \nNathan Carterette \nHailed as “wonderfully poetic\,” (Westfalen Post) and “very compelling in his power and presence” (International Composer)\, Nathan Carterette has distinguished himself in the concert world by performing a huge range of works from Elizabethan keyboard music to music written today. His innovative programming has inspired audiences to approach unfamiliar music with open ears\, and familiar music with new appreciation. \nMr. Carterette has performed in such venues as Weill Recital Hall and the Yamaha Piano Salon of New York City\, the Gasteig in Munich\, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe of Hamburg\, and Cleveland’s Trinity Cathedral. He has been presented in several universities such as the Berklee School of Music\, Cleveland Institute of Music\, Radford University\, Drake University\, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory\, and Carnegie Mellon. \nEducated at Yale University\, where he studied with Boris Berman\, Mr. Carterette began his piano studies at the age of eleven with Cleveland’s legendary Birute and Anthony Smetona. A chance encounter in 2004 with Welsh composer-pianist Dafydd Llywelyn led to an invitation for intensive private study in Germany\, both of the traditional repertoire and Llywelyn’s works. \nEdward Alan Moore \nEdward Alan Moore\, native of Girard\, OH\, is Organist/Music Director at East Liberty Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh\, PA. Previously he was a member of the organ faculty at The Catholic University of America Benjamin T. Rome School of Music in Washington\, DC\, Director of Music Ministries at The Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean\, VA\, and Minister of Music at National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, studying organ with Michael Farris\, improvisation with Gerre Hancock and Richard Erickson\, and serving as research assistant for Professor Wm. A. Little. \nAs a recitalist\, Dr. Moore was the first organist chosen to perform on the Millennium Stage concert series at the Kennedy Center in 2004. Other recitals include those at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City\, the Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta\, Princeton University Chapel\, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles\, and the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen\, MI. \nIn the past few years Dr. Moore’s performance schedule included concerts at various locations in the Pittsburgh area and at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine and the Riverside Church in New York City. As a choral accompanist\, he has been the featured organist with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh\, where his performance was described as “lucid and often glorious” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
