SUMMARY:Climate Realities Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Global warming has been on scientists’ radar for nearly 40 years. In 1979\, the National Academy of Sciences explained the phenomena of warming due to an increase in heat trapping gases\, and outlined its potential negative consequences. Since then\, scientists have been sounding the alarm\, calling for reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. We’ve been slow to respond. \nMore than 35 years later\, we continue our dependence on the very practices that result in global warming: burning fossil fuels\, wasting energy\, clearing forests\, and relying on industrial agriculture. Scientists now fear that without immediate and dramatic change\, we will reach a tipping point with devastating and irreversible impacts. There are actions we can and must take—individually and collectively—to change the course. \nSave the date and join us if you’re interested in learning more and engaging in further discussion. Our presentation and discussion will be facilitated by Lucyna de Barbaro and Susan Spangler\, Climate Reality Leaders who were recently trained by Al Gore. The ELPC Justice Committee will provide lunch. \n“In my dream the angel shrugged and said if we fail this time it will be a failure of imagination and then she placed the world gently in the palm of my hand…” \nSandra Ingerman

SUMMARY:What is Systemic Racism?
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2018\, ELPC’s Mission Board will be presenting a series of events\, titled Facing Systemic Racism. Discussions of racism often involve our personal experiences. What we may not realize is how racism in our social systems and institutions impacts our racial relationships. To tackle racism in our society\, we need to acknowledge the systems in our society that create institutional racism and racial privilege. \nPlease join us for our first program on Saturday\, April 28\, 6–8 pm\, as we explore our topic “What is Systemic Racism?” We will be led Laura Mariko Cheifetz\, deputy director of systems and sustainability at the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum. \nWe will share a potluck dinner together\, beginning at 5:30 pm. Bring a side or dessert to share. \nChildcare is available with prior registration by calling 412.441.3800 x140. \n\nOther Upcoming Events\nSystemic Racism: A Historical Timeline | Saturday\, May 19\, 5:50 pm \nDiscovering Our Implicit Bias | Saturday\, June 9\, 5:30 pm \nSpecial Film Series | Sundays in July\, 12 pm \nUncovering Your Racial Autobiography | Saturday\, September 22\, 5:30 pm \nAcknowledging White Privilege | Saturday\, October 20\, 5:30 pm
