SUMMARY:Heretics\, Doubters\, and Other Saints
DESCRIPTION:Because what we believe has everything to do with how we pray\, the Spiritual Life Committee (SLC) welcomes you to the next gathering of our Heretics\, Doubters and Other Saints group. \nDo you secretly think that if everyone actually knew what you believe—and what you do NOT believe—that you would not be welcome in church? Do you have some deep seated doubts about certain parts of the Christian story? Do you have to cross your fingers when you recite parts of the Apostle’s Creed? Well\, you may feel like you are alone; but\, you are not. \nTennyson famously said it\, “There lives more faith in honest doubt\, than in half the creeds.” And it is in that spirit that the SLC presents this quarterly time to come together with others who have also been carrying around their secret doubts and questions\, to talk about the wide breadth of theology within the Presbyterian church\, and to explore how your personal faith might be more complete. \nWe will share a light lunch and ask questions together. Remember\, there are no right or wrong thoughts here.

Allegro non troppo e molto maestoso – Allegro con spirito\nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) \nINTERMISSION \nCarillon-Sortie\nHenri Mulet (1878-1967) \nRhapsody in Blue\nGeorge Gershwin (1898-1937) \n  \nThe Arsenal Duo \nPittsburgh musicians Nathan Carterette (piano) and Edward Alan Moore (organ) have joined forces as The Arsenal Duo\, presenting concerts that unite their respective instruments in a unique and spectacular fashion. They draw from a diverse repertoire\, including works originally for piano and orchestra; works original to piano and organ; their own transcriptions; and solo offerings. \nFormed in 2013\, The Arsenal Duo made their debut performance at Youngstown\, Ohio’s historic Stambaugh Auditorium\, where they attracted one of the largest audiences since the restoration of the hall’s E.M. Skinner pipe organ. The duo returned to Stambaugh to record several tracks for a forthcoming recording. They have also been presented at Pittsburgh’s East Liberty Presbyterian Church and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral\, Christ Episcopal Church in Warren\, Ohio\, and National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. \nThe 2015-2016 season had the duo playing concerts in Colorado\, Virginia\, Ohio\, Illinois\, Michigan\, and Pennsylvania. The 2016-2017 season includes concerts in New Canaan\, CT\, Wilson College in Chambersburg\, PA\, Dearborn\, MI\, Tarentum\, PA\, and an invitation to return to Stambaugh Auditorium on July 3\, 2017 as featured performers for the Great Lakes Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists. \nNathan Carterette \nHailed as “wonderfully poetic\,” (Westfalen Post) and “very compelling in his power and presence” (International Composer)\, Nathan Carterette has distinguished himself in the concert world by performing a huge range of works from Elizabethan keyboard music to music written today. His innovative programming has inspired audiences to approach unfamiliar music with open ears\, and familiar music with new appreciation. \nMr. Carterette has performed in such venues as Weill Recital Hall and the Yamaha Piano Salon of New York City\, the Gasteig in Munich\, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe of Hamburg\, and Cleveland’s Trinity Cathedral. He has been presented in several universities such as the Berklee School of Music\, Cleveland Institute of Music\, Radford University\, Drake University\, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory\, and Carnegie Mellon. \nEducated at Yale University\, where he studied with Boris Berman\, Mr. Carterette began his piano studies at the age of eleven with Cleveland’s legendary Birute and Anthony Smetona. A chance encounter in 2004 with Welsh composer-pianist Dafydd Llywelyn led to an invitation for intensive private study in Germany\, both of the traditional repertoire and Llywelyn’s works. \nEdward Alan Moore \nEdward Alan Moore\, native of Girard\, OH\, is Organist/Music Director at East Liberty Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh\, PA. Previously he was a member of the organ faculty at The Catholic University of America Benjamin T. Rome School of Music in Washington\, DC\, Director of Music Ministries at The Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean\, VA\, and Minister of Music at National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, studying organ with Michael Farris\, improvisation with Gerre Hancock and Richard Erickson\, and serving as research assistant for Professor Wm. A. Little. \nAs a recitalist\, Dr. Moore was the first organist chosen to perform on the Millennium Stage concert series at the Kennedy Center in 2004. Other recitals include those at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City\, the Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta\, Princeton University Chapel\, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles\, and the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen\, MI. \nIn the past few years Dr. Moore’s performance schedule included concerts at various locations in the Pittsburgh area and at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine and the Riverside Church in New York City. As a choral accompanist\, he has been the featured organist with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh\, where his performance was described as “lucid and often glorious” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

They provide a benchmark to measure growth from year to year\, and an incentive for students to practice and polish pieces they are working on. \nThere will be many recital sessions scheduled throughout the day in various rooms throughout the church building. Please do not ask to have your child perform at the beginning or the end of their recital session – students and families are expected to be on time and stay for the entire recital that their children are performing in. We are organizing the recital sessions to be about an hour long. \nCOOKIE RECEPTION \nEach family is asked to bring cookies for a reception that will follow the recital. There will be two reception rooms in the front hallway\, leading to the Sanctuary. Rooms will be labeled so that cookies can be placed in the room that corresponds to the student’s studio. Please bring cookies only. It is best if they are on a disposable tray. \nRECITAL ETIQUETTE \nLearning about and practicing recital etiquette is an important part of a student’s musical education\, so we ask that families read and discuss these guidelines with their children. \nPerformer Etiquette \n\nDress appropriately. Choose conservative over casual in terms of shoe styles\, hem length of dresses and straps for tops.\nAvoid jewelry that makes noise as you move; heels that are difficult to walk in; and sleeves that get in the way of playing.\nBe on time. Your teacher will let you know when and where to meet before the recital to warm up. This will be at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the recital. If you are playing with an accompanist\, you may be asked to arrive earlier to rehearse together.\nBe prepared. Make sure you have your music\, instrument and any necessary accessories before leaving home (bow\, rosin\, capo\, tuner\, etc.)\nBe respectful. Refrain from whispering\, talking\, or using electronic devices. Show the other performers the same courtesy you want to be shown.\nEnter and exit with confidence. You should bow at the end and acknowledge the accompanist (if you have one). Teachers will go over this in lessons.\n\nAudience Etiquette \n\nArrive on time or a little early. Late arrivals are distracting to the audience\, and they can be unnerving for the performer.\nTurn off cell phones and other electronic devices. Ring tones and electronic chirps are distracting; and texting\, reading emails and playing games while students are performing is disrespectful.\nDo not cause distractions. Bring something (a quiet game or book) to keep young children under 8 years old occupied. Children over 8 should be able to sit quietly and watch.\nTake disruptive infants or toddlers out of the recital as soon as they become fussy. Please sit close to an aisle so that you can leave without too much commotion. We will come to get you when your child performs.\nDo not talk\, whisper\, rattle papers or eat during the recital.\nStay for the entire performance to show respect for all of the musicians.\n\nPhotos and Video \n\nNo flash photography\, please\nA group photo\, with the teacher\, will be taken at the end of each recital session.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Parade and Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Pittsburgh’s 2019 Juneteenth celebration will be held June 28–30. ELPC will participate in the parade\, beginning at Freedom Corner (Crawford St. and Centre Ave.)\, Saturday\, June 29\, 11 am. Line up begins at 10 am. Wear your ELPC t-shirt and put on walking shoes to march behind the ELPC banner to Point State Park\, where the festivities will continue throughout the weekend. \nOur Young Adult Ministry will have a setup in the park with blankets\, chairs\, and water to spend the afternoon celebrating Juneteenth! \nLooking for more information? Youth and young adults\, contact Kelli Booher at KelliB@coh.net or 412.441.3800 x114. Other ages\, contact Michele Bossers at michele2285@gmail.com. \n\nAbout Juneteenth\nJuneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865\, it was on June 19 that Union soldiers notified the city of Galveston\, Texas\, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Although this was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation became official on Jan. 1\, 1863\, the proclamation had little impact on Texans until the war ended. With the surrender of General Lee in April 1865\, the Union forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance\, freeing all slaves. This news was met with joy and celebration and Juneteenth was born as an annual celebration of emancipation and freedom.

SUMMARY:Keep Families Together: Out of Cages & In Their Homes!
DESCRIPTION:Immigrant families face separation constantly\, this time thanks to Ben Carson and his Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). A new proposal would evict mixed-status families from subsidized housing\, requiring everyone except senior citizens to prove citizenship. This would mean that if a woman living in subsidized housing has her brother who is applying for asylum temporarily staying with her\, both would face eviction unless the brother moved out. More than 100\,000 families would face eviction if this rule is put in place. \nHUD admits its mixed-status rule will NOT reduce wait lists\, but WILL reduce the quality and quantity of housing. This is clearly another attack on immigrants and poor people\, and we will let the government know why we will not stand for it. \nJoin us to take part in the federal public comment period to oppose this rule change and take a stand against family separation. Public comment periods are an incredibly effective way to influence federal policy. \nThis event is part of Just Harvest’s Power of the Pen series—monthly events to write letters to public officials to create real world change. Dinner will be provided.

SUMMARY:2019 Film Festival | Urban Roots
DESCRIPTION:Once an industrial powerhouse of a lost American era\, Detroit has been devastated by the loss of half its population due to the collapse of manufacturing. By the looks of it\, the city has died. But now\, in the empty lots\, in the old factory yards\, and in-between the sagging blocks of housing\, seeds of change are taking root. \nDedicated citizens have started an urban environmental movement with the potential to transform not just a city after its collapse\, but also a country after the end of its industrial age. Urban Roots shows Detroiters working to fulfill their vision for locally-grown\, sustainably farmed food in a city where people—as in much of the county—have found themselves cut off from real food. \n  \nSponsored by the Justice Committee\nRuntime: 94 minutes \n  \n\nAbout the 2019 Summer Film Festival\nEach year\, the ELPC Mission Board and Mission Committees sponsor and host a summer film series. SUMMARY:ELPC Celebrates Anthony Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Special Fellowship Time honoring Anthony Williams. \nAnthony Williams has served as a youth worker at ELPC for over 18 years. As an integral part of our youth ministry team\, Mr. Anthony has nurtured the faith of generations of teens at ELPC\, chaperoned dozens of Mission Trips and retreats\, led a basketball ministry for youth in the community\, and supported Confirmands on their journey to adult membership at ELPC. \nWhether through an interactive Bible Study or a game of Spades\, Mr. Anthony has taught the love of God in Christ to all\, and has modeled what it means to put one’s faith in action. Late this spring\, Mr. Anthony was named Head of School of The Neighborhood Academy. With this exciting transition in his life\, Mr. Anthony has discerned the need to step down from his role at ELPC to dedicate his time and energy to his new position. \nWe give thanks for Mr. Anthony – for his impact on the lives of many here at ELPC and at TNA. We will celebrate his 18 years of service during a special fellowship time in his honor\, following the 10 AM worship service on August 18. Please join us to thank him and wish him well on the next leg of his journey! \nIf you can’t be there\, send a few words of well-wishes\, a picture or a fun memory that we’ll include in a gift to him … send photos and or memories to HeatherS@coh.net.
