SUMMARY:Renovations Commencement
DESCRIPTION:After years of planning\, ELPC’s long-awaited renovations are finally underway. It is important to kick-off this project and dedicate these efforts with a time of prayer and celebration. As Mother’s Day was the auspicious date of dedicating the ELPC cathedral back in 1935\, it is appropriate to pick that same date for our “groundbreaking event” for the current renovations. \nFollowing our Sanctuary worship service on Sun.\, May 14\, gather outside the church on the Whitfield St. side for a brief program\, time of singing\, reflections and prayer\, culminating in a release of doves as ELPC builds its future by maintaining and improving our church for present day and future ministries. \nThe event will conclude with fellowship and food! Please join us! (Note: There will be no Fellowship Time in the McKelvy Room.)

SUMMARY:The Impact of Open Hand Ministries
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Mission Board and Neighbors Committee as the Rev. Michael Stanton\, executive director of Open Hand Ministries (OHM)\, updates us on the impact of OHM in East Liberty and Garfield. \nELPC is a founding church of OHM\, which was established in 2008\, following the success of the 2007 East End Blitz. OHM reflects the desire of several neighborhood churches to develop an ongoing ministry to address the injustices of unequal access to wealth-building activity (such as home ownership)\, create neighborhood stability\, and break the cycles of poverty. OHM promotes social justice in our community by helping families become wealth-builders\, rehabilitating vacant properties\, and remaining in supportive relationships with families after they become homeowners. \nIn the last 10 years\, OHM has: \n\nHelped 12 families become homeowners;\nAssisted more than 16 families through family development programs; and\nRehabbed more than 20 properties in East Liberty and Garfield.\n\nOHM’s work to provide affordable housing in our changing neighborhoods is an important part of East Liberty’s overall development plan. ELPC supports OHM through yearly mission grants\, volunteers for work days and family development programs\, and board membership. \nFor details about this program\, email Emily Rosenthal at ejr116@gmail.com or call Pastor Patrice at 412.441.3800. For more information about OHM\, visit OpenHandPgh.org. To learn more about housing development in East Liberty\, visit EastLiberty.org.

SUMMARY:HAT Co Band at Three Rivers Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Fortunates\, from Hope Academy of Music and the Arts\, make and perform music that falls somewhere on the spectrum between R&B\, pop\, funk\, soul and jazz. Some might call it genre-less; they call it just being themselves. Lead singer\, Laela Lumsden brings melodic rap to “Hear Me\,” a song she wrote for the WYEP Reimagination contest. It is a song that challenges us to pay attention and listen to what is happening in her community and in our world–a song that encourages young people to speak out because\, “if I don’t say it\, the truth’s gonna die out.” \nThe instrumentalists\, Henry Schultz (keyboard)\, James Jaap (bass) and Desmond Rucker (drums) have known each other since their elementary school days at Dilworth. The newest and youngest band member\, Tomi Olaore (saxophone)\, also went to Dilworth and now all four attend Pittsburgh CAPA. The singers\, Laela Lumsden\, Kira Mukogosi\, Kyra Simmons and Raffaella Carattino attend North Gate\, CAPA\, PA Cyberschool and Colfax. As a group\, their diversity is one of their greatest strengths and their name\, The Fortunates\, embodies their spirit of being grateful for the opportunity to make music together. \nThe Fortunates are part of a larger teen theater company (HAT Co) at Hope Academy\, where they also study dance and theater. This multidisciplinary approach informs their work as musicians\, singers and songwriters. They are under the musical direction of Emma Cox (guitar and bass)\, and Ben Barson (saxophone). \nHope Academy of Music and the Arts is an after school performing arts education outreach program of East Liberty Presbyterian Church. \nHAT Co (Hope Academy Theater Company) is an audition-only company that provides a more intensive\, ensemble- and performance-based experience for students in grades 6 through 12 who are interested in the performing arts. HAT Co members are encouraged to make their own work\, as they learn to think about and respect dance\, theater and music as art forms – and themselves as artists and creators. \nThis program is uniquely suited for teens who are motivated to study and perform across a range of disciplines; and who have an interest in being part of an inclusive\, supportive\, non-competitive group. Ensemble members receive individual\, class and ensemble training in acting\, singing\, dance and instrumental music. Selected students rehearse and perform as part of a theater ensemble; two other select groups rehearse and perform as part of rock bands. \nThe theater ensemble participates in the Pittsburgh Public Theater Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest and the August Wilson Monologue Contest; and each year they present a showcase performance. \nHAT Co has performed at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater\, The Warhol Museum\, CAPA’s Battle of the Bands\, The Summit Against Racism\, WYEP’s Summer Music Festival and Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. \nHAT Co alumni recently recorded “All I Want for Christmas (Is My Baby)” with Steven Foxbury from Yellow Couch Studio. They performed this song\, which won the first Reimagination contest in 2012\, with their artist-mentors Emma Cox and Lauren Shapiro (from the band The Color Fleet) for WYEP’s 2012 Holiday Hootenanny. The alumni reunion performance of the song landed them a spot on Pittsburgh Today Live last December. SUMMARY:Summer Film Series: A Justice that Heals
DESCRIPTION:The Neighbors\, Justice\, and Peace Committees of the Mission Board are teaming up to sponsor our fifth annual Summer Film Series. Films will be shown after our Summer worship service\, along with a light potluck lunch in the Social Hall. \nA Justice that Heals is a documentary that explores the aftermath of the senseless murder of 19-year-old Andrew Young by 18-year-old Mario Ramos. It was one of 90 homicides in Chicago that month and\, in many ways\, was nothing unusual. But\, the events that followed were anything but typical. Moving between interviews with Andrew’s family\, Mario\, his parents and pastor\, this documentary reveals the human journey to find redemption and a form of justice that heals. \n56 minutes | Hosted by the Justice Committee

SUMMARY:Summer Film Series: Locked in a Box
DESCRIPTION:The Neighbors\, Justice\, and Peace Committees of the Mission Board are teaming up to sponsor our fifth annual Summer Film Series. Films will be shown after our Summer worship service\, along with a light potluck lunch in the Social Hall. \nLocked in a Box is an award-winning short documentary that follows the stories of individuals held in the U.S. Immigration detention system and those who visit them. The film traces the lives of individuals who fled their homelands in search of safety and freedom only to end up in U.S. prisons under a mandatory bed quota system run by Immigration Customs & Enforcement (ICE). Since the 1990’s there has been a massive expansion of the immigration detention system up to 34\,000 immigrants in detention on any given day in approximately 200 different facilities\, many of which are for-profit prisons. “Locked in a Box” helps strip away the political rhetoric to see the human cost of detention. \n24 minutes | Hosted by the Justice Committee

DESCRIPTION:The Neighbors\, Justice\, and Peace Committees of the Mission Board are teaming up to sponsor our fifth annual Summer Film Series. Films will be shown after our Summer worship service\, along with a light potluck lunch in the Social Hall. \nThe Brainwashing of My Dad is a documentary film directed by Jen Senko about the transformation of her father\, Frank who was originally a “nonpolitical Kennedy Democrat”\, but changed into a political Republican since the 1980s. On her father’s three hour or more commute to his place of employment\, he listened to talk radio about Republican issues. Senko believes that the talk shows started the change in her father’s personality. The documentary includes Matthew Modine as the narrator and also features Noam Chomsky and Jeff Cohen. British doctor Kathleen Taylor examines how the media changed Frank’s mind\, and the minds of people that are similar to him. \nAbbreviated version | Hosted by the Peace Committee

In April 2016\, he was officially recognized and inducted as a Pittsburgh Rock ’n Roll Legend at an award ceremony sponsored by the Cancer Caring Center of Pittsburgh. Members of the Billy Price Band are Steve Delach (guitar)\, Tom Valentine (bass)\, Dave Dodd (drums)\, Jimmy Britton (keyboards)\, and Eric DeFade (tenor sax). Billy Price first attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan. Price is the vocalist on two of Buchanan’s LPs\, That’s What I’m Here For and Livestock. Price assembled Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band in 1977. Before their breakup in 1990\, the band recorded four critically acclaimed LPs and developed a reputation as one of the most exciting touring bands in the U.S. With the Keystone Rhythm Band\, the Billy Price Band\, and solo projects\, Billy Price has recorded and released a total of 15 albums\, CDs\, and DVDs. His album This Time for Real\, with recently deceased Chicago soul singer Otis Clay\, received a 2016 Blues Music Award by the Blues Foundation of Memphis\, Tennessee in the category of Best Soul Blues Album. A live recording of the Billy Price Band\, Alive and Strange\, was released by Nola Blues/Vizztone Label Group in April 2017.\n\nABOUT AFRO YAQUI MUSIC COLLECTIVE \nHope Academy teaching artists\, Ben Barson and Gizelxanath Rodriguez\, bring jazz\, funk and soul into dialogue with indigenous music of the 21st century. The Afro Yaqui Music Collective (AYMC) is a 9-piece outfit which descends from the ensembles of Guggenhiem award winner Fred Ho\, whose work was influenced by West African\, global Indigenous and East Asian musics. The AYMC is co-led by Gizelxanath Rodriguez\, an internationally performing soprano and activist\, who is also a winner of the 2014 ACE Award. The band is also led by her partner\, Ben Barson\, Fred Ho’s Baritone protege who “he felt has the heft and sound to represent [Ho’s] assertive approach (The New York Times).” Special guest artist\, Havana – based musician Albertico Lescay.\n \n  \nABOUT HOPE ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND THE ARTS \nHope Academy of Music and the Arts\, an outreach program of East Liberty Presbyterian Church\, offers a safe place where young people of diverse racial\, ethnic\, cultural\, socioeconomic\, religious and linguistic backgrounds can further their personal and artistic growth through the study and performance of theater\, dance and music. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive artistic community that provides deep arts instruction through a sequential and progressive program; that supports the personal and artistic growth of students and teaching artists\, alike; and contributes to our community’s positive growth and cultural vibrancy. Over 350 young people and their families participate in Hope Academy’s programs throughout the year. \n  \nABOUT KARL SELLNER \nFrom an early age\, Karl Jacob Sellner was simply captivated by his grandfather John Alden’s music\, foreshadowing his life-long love of the performing arts.  This passion was nurtured by his family and by his many experiences as a student of Hope Academy. As a teen and young adult\, Karl became an accomplished guitar player and lyricist.  As with his love of music\, Karl found the other things he cared about early in life\, including his wife Shelby and his calling to join the US Army to serve\, like his grandfather had during WWII.  Like so many gifted musicians before him\, Karl’s light was also shadowed by bi-polar disorder. On\, September 11\, 2016 Karl’s pain was too much and he ended his life.  The support of the Hope Academy community was treasured by his parents and 6 siblings during this time of grief and together they channeled this sadness into the Karl Jacob Sellner Memorial Fund for Hope Academy.  This fund honors his memory and ensures that his  love of music will live on through the beautiful voices\, playing of various instruments\, dance and acting of children for many years to come.
