SUMMARY:Sean Jones and Friends Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a concert featuring Classical Sean Jones and Friends. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then RSVP here by Sunday\, November 18. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nSean Jones\nMusic and spirituality have always been fully intertwined in the artistic vision of trumpeter\, composer\, educator and activist Sean Jones. Singing and performing as a child with the church choir in his hometown of Warren\, Ohio\, Sean switched from the drums to the trumpet upon his first exposure to Miles Davis at the age of 10. Twenty-five years later\, he still cites Miles’ overall artistic vision and purity of sound as his greatest personal influence. But it was another immortal visionary who had a most profound impact when Sean was a 19-year old student at Youngstown State University – the magnificent John Coltrane through his masterpiece\, A Love Supreme. Says Jones\, “All at once\, everything just came together for me. My past\, my present\, my future. I knew the course I needed to pursue.” Already exhibiting a superb control of the instrument through his private studies with master trumpeter and educator Esotto Pellegrini and his intensive listening to his other primary influences\, Woody Shaw\, Freddie Hubbard and Clifford Brown\, the young trumpeter committed himself to artistic excellence the pursuit of transcendence. Five years later\, after receiving his Master’s Degree from Rutgers University\, Sean had a 6-month stint with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. This marked the beginning of a relationship with Wynton Marsalis\, whose personal work ethic and ability to break barriers had already made a significant impact on the emerging artist. Wynton offered Sean a permanent position as lead trumpeter and Jones remained there until 2010. A highly respected and in-demand musician even while at Rutgers\, Sean was prominently featured with a number of artists\, recording and/or performing with many major figures\, including Illinois Jacquet\, Jimmy Heath\, Frank Foster\, Nancy Wilson\, Dianne Reeves\, Gerald Wilson and Marcus Miller. The relationship with Miller led to another highly impacting experience when Sean was selected by Miller\, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for their Tribute to Miles tour in 2011. The trust and support of those giants led Sean to a decision to focus on performing with his own ensembles. Already touring and performing regularly with his own groups while at Lincoln Center\, Sean also began his longtime relationship with Mack Avenue Records\, for whom he has just released his seventh recording: im.pro.vise = never before seen. He’s currently performing with the quartet on his latest CD\, who have been working together since 2007 – with pianist Orrin Evans\, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire. But Sean is also looking toward projects with new and larger ensembles\, including orchestras. In addition\, he’s planning on more forays into the world of Western classical music\, while working on solidifying his pedagogy and increasing his lecturing and writing activities. Heavily involved in education\, Sean has recently joined the Berklee College of Music’s distinguished faculty as the Chair of the Brass Department. He has also taught at Duquesne University in his adopted hometown of Pittsburgh and at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music\, while regularly offering master classes and clinics all around the world. In addition\, Sean also serves as Artistic Director of both the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras and is working toward organizing the various Jazz orchestras all over the country. Sean is current Artist-in-Residence at San Francisco Performances and is a member of The SF JAZZ Collective. Clearly a passionately committed\, heavily focused and deeply spiritual man\, Sean relies upon his serious study of philosophy – especially that of 13th century theologian and mystic Meister Eckhardt; and Don Miguel Ruiz\, whose vision is drawn from the ancient wisdom of the Toltec native people of Southern Mexico – to fuel the pursuit of his expansive and generous vision. Sean currently lives in Boston with his wife Stacey. \n  \nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. Since music is mostly a listening activity\, any extra sounds that are not part of the music can get in the way and will distract and disturb the musicians and other audience members. \nBefore the Concert\nWear something you might wear to a special event – because it is!. Please don’t wear anything that might be distracting (light up shoes\, clanging jewelry\, etc)\nArrive no later than 7:00 pm to get your tickets. \nBefore You Take Your Seat\nTake care of all rest room needs.\nLeave all food\, drink\, and gum outside\, in the lobby.\nLeave all cameras and recording devices outside\, as well. There are strict copyright guidelines about recording concerts.\nTurn off all cell phones\, pagers\, ipads\, watch sounds\, alarms\, or anything that might make a noise. The only sounds that should be heard are the ones that appear in the musical score (and the audience reaction after the music). \nOnce You Take Your Seat\nA parent or guardian must sit next to each child.\nRemain seated and quiet while the musicians are playing. Do not get up during the concert or change seats.\nNo talking\, whispering\, sighing\, tapping or kicking feet\, or rattling of programs or papers.\nBe sure to sit without fidgeting so you don’t distract your neighbors or the performers on stage. \nFeel free to leave during intermission\, if this is a late night for your children; and if they fall asleep during the concert\, that’s okay too. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!Sean

SUMMARY:Interfaith Panel on the Use of Sound in Faith
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian life—like that of virtually every other faith—is saturated with sound. Bells call us to worship\, we sing our praises to God\, and are moved by beautiful anthems to the accompaniment of organ\, piano\, and other instruments. We clap our appreciation\, utter aloud prayers and liturgy\, and\, of course\, we listen to sermons\, teachers\, and the words of others. \nAll of these sounds have an effect upon who we are\, as well as what and how we believe. Scientists study the actual physical effects of differing sound waves on matter\, and mystics have long acknowledged the impact of sound\, including the sound of silence on the open heart. \nJoin the Spiritual Life Committee in the Social Hall as we explore the science and spiritual dimensions of sound in our own tradition and that of other faiths.

SUMMARY:Fellowship Time to Support DACA
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Justice Committee will hold a letter-writing\, petition-signing\, and tweeting advocacy campaign to support the DACA/DreamAct during Fellowship Time following worship on Sun.\, Jan. 28. Please join us in the Whitfield Lobby (ground floor) to find out how you can best lend your support. We will have the materials you need and some light snacks. \nThe DACA program was implemented in 2012 to provide an opportunity for some children who arrived in the U.S. illegally to stay in the country legally. The roughly 800\,000 participants in the program—commonly referred to as Dreamers—receive a range of benefits\, including the ability to acquire work permits\, eligibility for in-state tuition\, and access to state-subsided health care. The Dreamers\, who fall between the ages of 16–35\, must be enrolled in high school or already have earned a diploma or G.E.D. to qualify. Participants can renew their status every two years. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Kirtan with Ashley O’Hara
DESCRIPTION:Sound and Spirituality: Exploring Traditions\nAs we continue exploring the role sound plays in our spirituality\, the Spiritual Life Committee is offering two interfaith programs in March that focus on sound and its use in worship and prayer. Both programs follow Sanctuary worship and feature a light lunch. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or musical ability is needed. \nIn our second program on Sun.\, March 18\, Ashley O’Hara will be with us to explore Kirtan—a form of devotion found in the Bhakti tradition of Hinduism. Bhakti Yoga is all about love\, service and surrender to the Divine. Simply put\, Kirtan is the practice of singing and chanting the names of the Divine. When we chant together\, something magical happens. Kirtan is mantra meditation that gets you out of your analytical mind and into your heart and into the present moment. It’s a opportunity to let your heart sing and be heard. You have to experience this magic for yourself. \nCome learn more about Bhakti and be uplifted by chanting with us. Don’t worry about your singing voice\, it’s all an offering. Join us for an afternoon of Bhakti Yoga philosophy\, chanting\, and storytelling. \n\nAbout our presenter\nAshley O’Hara (RYT-500) has been practicing yoga for a decade. Her love for alignment flow\, yoga philosophy\, and mantra meditation are the cornerstones of her practice. Ashley completed her 200-hour YogaWorks training in 2013 with Anna Gilbert Zupon\, and completed her 300-hour Bhakti Yoga training in India with Supersoul Yoga\, led by Raghunath and Brij Cappo in 2016. Ashley believes the practice of yoga and chanting scared mantras awakens our hearts and connects us with the energy of Love. She is excited to share her deep love of Bhakti yoga\, as well as encourage others to come play\, explore\, sing\, and be inspired. \nAshley also plays harmonium and loves to lead others in Kirtan—the singing of mantras. When not immersed in yoga\, Ashley is a practicing psychotherapist at a community mental health center or hanging out with her awesome kitties\, Sthira and Sukha.

SUMMARY:Climate Realities Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Global warming has been on scientists’ radar for nearly 40 years. In 1979\, the National Academy of Sciences explained the phenomena of warming due to an increase in heat trapping gases\, and outlined its potential negative consequences. Since then\, scientists have been sounding the alarm\, calling for reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. We’ve been slow to respond. \nMore than 35 years later\, we continue our dependence on the very practices that result in global warming: burning fossil fuels\, wasting energy\, clearing forests\, and relying on industrial agriculture. Scientists now fear that without immediate and dramatic change\, we will reach a tipping point with devastating and irreversible impacts. There are actions we can and must take—individually and collectively—to change the course. \nSave the date and join us if you’re interested in learning more and engaging in further discussion. Our presentation and discussion will be facilitated by Lucyna de Barbaro and Susan Spangler\, Climate Reality Leaders who were recently trained by Al Gore. The ELPC Justice Committee will provide lunch. \n“In my dream the angel shrugged and said if we fail this time it will be a failure of imagination and then she placed the world gently in the palm of my hand…” \nSandra Ingerman

SUMMARY:What is Systemic Racism?
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2018\, ELPC’s Mission Board will be presenting a series of events\, titled Facing Systemic Racism. Discussions of racism often involve our personal experiences. What we may not realize is how racism in our social systems and institutions impacts our racial relationships. To tackle racism in our society\, we need to acknowledge the systems in our society that create institutional racism and racial privilege. \nPlease join us for our first program on Saturday\, April 28\, 6–8 pm\, as we explore our topic “What is Systemic Racism?” We will be led Laura Mariko Cheifetz\, deputy director of systems and sustainability at the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum. \nWe will share a potluck dinner together\, beginning at 5:30 pm. Bring a side or dessert to share. \nChildcare is available with prior registration by calling 412.441.3800 x140. \n\nOther Upcoming Events\nSystemic Racism: A Historical Timeline | Saturday\, May 19\, 5:50 pm \nDiscovering Our Implicit Bias | Saturday\, June 9\, 5:30 pm \nSpecial Film Series | Sundays in July\, 12 pm \nUncovering Your Racial Autobiography | Saturday\, September 22\, 5:30 pm \nAcknowledging White Privilege | Saturday\, October 20\, 5:30 pm
