SUMMARY:Faith\, Science\, and Our Spiritual Life
DESCRIPTION:What do the Universe and God have in common? If evolution is true\, does that leave room for God? If I believe in God does that mean I have to deny physics? Got questions? So do we! \nJoin us as we discuss the intersection between the science of our universe and our understanding of the Divine\, led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan. We read\, watch videos\, and try to make meaning of this precious moment which we share. You are welcome whether or not you have read\, studied\, or asked these questions before. Come join the conversation!

SUMMARY:Fellowship Time to Support DACA
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Justice Committee will hold a letter-writing\, petition-signing\, and tweeting advocacy campaign to support the DACA/DreamAct during Fellowship Time following worship on Sun.\, Jan. 28. Please join us in the Whitfield Lobby (ground floor) to find out how you can best lend your support. We will have the materials you need and some light snacks. \nThe DACA program was implemented in 2012 to provide an opportunity for some children who arrived in the U.S. illegally to stay in the country legally. The roughly 800\,000 participants in the program—commonly referred to as Dreamers—receive a range of benefits\, including the ability to acquire work permits\, eligibility for in-state tuition\, and access to state-subsided health care. The Dreamers\, who fall between the ages of 16–35\, must be enrolled in high school or already have earned a diploma or G.E.D. to qualify. Participants can renew their status every two years. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:Kirtan with Ashley O’Hara
DESCRIPTION:Sound and Spirituality: Exploring Traditions\nAs we continue exploring the role sound plays in our spirituality\, the Spiritual Life Committee is offering two interfaith programs in March that focus on sound and its use in worship and prayer. Both programs follow Sanctuary worship and feature a light lunch. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or musical ability is needed. \nIn our second program on Sun.\, March 18\, Ashley O’Hara will be with us to explore Kirtan—a form of devotion found in the Bhakti tradition of Hinduism. Bhakti Yoga is all about love\, service and surrender to the Divine. Simply put\, Kirtan is the practice of singing and chanting the names of the Divine. When we chant together\, something magical happens. Kirtan is mantra meditation that gets you out of your analytical mind and into your heart and into the present moment. It’s a opportunity to let your heart sing and be heard. You have to experience this magic for yourself. \nCome learn more about Bhakti and be uplifted by chanting with us. Don’t worry about your singing voice\, it’s all an offering. Join us for an afternoon of Bhakti Yoga philosophy\, chanting\, and storytelling. \n\nAbout our presenter\nAshley O’Hara (RYT-500) has been practicing yoga for a decade. Her love for alignment flow\, yoga philosophy\, and mantra meditation are the cornerstones of her practice. Ashley completed her 200-hour YogaWorks training in 2013 with Anna Gilbert Zupon\, and completed her 300-hour Bhakti Yoga training in India with Supersoul Yoga\, led by Raghunath and Brij Cappo in 2016. Ashley believes the practice of yoga and chanting scared mantras awakens our hearts and connects us with the energy of Love. She is excited to share her deep love of Bhakti yoga\, as well as encourage others to come play\, explore\, sing\, and be inspired. \nAshley also plays harmonium and loves to lead others in Kirtan—the singing of mantras. When not immersed in yoga\, Ashley is a practicing psychotherapist at a community mental health center or hanging out with her awesome kitties\, Sthira and Sukha.

SUMMARY:Climate Realities Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Global warming has been on scientists’ radar for nearly 40 years. In 1979\, the National Academy of Sciences explained the phenomena of warming due to an increase in heat trapping gases\, and outlined its potential negative consequences. Since then\, scientists have been sounding the alarm\, calling for reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. We’ve been slow to respond. \nMore than 35 years later\, we continue our dependence on the very practices that result in global warming: burning fossil fuels\, wasting energy\, clearing forests\, and relying on industrial agriculture. Scientists now fear that without immediate and dramatic change\, we will reach a tipping point with devastating and irreversible impacts. There are actions we can and must take—individually and collectively—to change the course. \nSave the date and join us if you’re interested in learning more and engaging in further discussion. Our presentation and discussion will be facilitated by Lucyna de Barbaro and Susan Spangler\, Climate Reality Leaders who were recently trained by Al Gore. The ELPC Justice Committee will provide lunch. \n“In my dream the angel shrugged and said if we fail this time it will be a failure of imagination and then she placed the world gently in the palm of my hand…” \nSandra Ingerman

SUMMARY:WYEP Reimagination CD Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s band\, The Levellers\, will be performing at a party to celebrate the release of their original song “Tell Me Why\,” on this year’s WYEP Reimagination CD. The party goes from 2 to 5 pm at the WYEP studios\, with the Levellers playing at 3:15 pm. \nThe Levellers original song – “Tell Me Why”\n\nProducer:\nJon Bindley \nRecorded at The Church Recording Studio by Dana Cannone \nBand Members:\nSojo Bradbury\, Lead Singer\nBella Bradbury\,Singer\nKira Mukogosi\,Singer\nKyra Simmons\,Singer\nMarvin Irish\, Drums\nJames Jaap\, Bass Guitar\nTomi Olaore\, Saxophone\nAdam Peters\, Guitar\nJames Picone\, Bass Guitar\nDesmond Rucker\, Drums \nThe Levellers\, from Hope Academy of Music and the Arts\, chose their name to reference a group of activists from the 1600s\, during the English Civil War\, who called for constitutional reform\, religious tolerance and equal rights. While their individual musical styles range from Death Metal and Heavy Rock to Prince\, The Beatles and Michael Jackson; they came together for this song\, “Tell Me Why\,” to write a country blues vibe to complement Sojo Bradbury’s lyrics.  The song was written to describe a child’s first awareness of living in an unjust world; of having questions about the world that should have been answered long ago; and about deciding to reject the status quo and\, like The Levellers\, say #neveragain.

SUMMARY:Systemic Racism: Discovering Our Implicit Bias
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2018\, ELPC’s Mission Board will be presenting a series of events\, titled Facing Systemic Racism. Discussions of racism often involve our personal experiences. What we may not realize is how racism in our social systems and institutions impacts our racial relationships. To tackle racism in our society\, we need to acknowledge the systems in our society that create institutional racism and racial privilege. \nJoin us for the third program in our series\, titled “Systemic Racism: Discovering Our Implicit Bias.” Our discussion and activities will explore these questions: \n\nWhat exactly is implicit bias?\nHow does it work?\nWhy is it important to understand and recognize it?\nWhat can I do about it?\n\nWe will share a potluck dinner together\, beginning at 5:30 pm. Bring a side or dessert to share. \nChildcare is available with prior registration by calling 412.441.3800 x140. \n\nOther Upcoming Events\nSpecial Film Series | Sundays in July\, 12 pm \nUncovering Your Racial Autobiography | Saturday\, September 22\, 5:30 pm \nAcknowledging White Privilege | Saturday\, October 20\, 5:30 pm
