SUMMARY:2019 Film Festival | Urban Roots
DESCRIPTION:Once an industrial powerhouse of a lost American era\, Detroit has been devastated by the loss of half its population due to the collapse of manufacturing. By the looks of it\, the city has died. But now\, in the empty lots\, in the old factory yards\, and in-between the sagging blocks of housing\, seeds of change are taking root. \nDedicated citizens have started an urban environmental movement with the potential to transform not just a city after its collapse\, but also a country after the end of its industrial age. Urban Roots shows Detroiters working to fulfill their vision for locally-grown\, sustainably farmed food in a city where people—as in much of the county—have found themselves cut off from real food. \n  \nSponsored by the Justice Committee\nRuntime: 94 minutes \n  \n\nAbout the 2019 Summer Film Festival\nEach year\, the ELPC Mission Board and Mission Committees sponsor and host a summer film series. This year’s themes are a continuation of our ongoing focus on facing systemic racism. Everyone is invited to stay after worship on Sundays\, July 14\, August 4\, and August 18\, and join us in the Good Samaritan Room to view the movies\, discuss the themes\, and enjoy a light lunch together.

SUMMARY:2019 Film Festival | BlacKkKlansman
DESCRIPTION:From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. \nAfrican-American detective Ron Stallworth sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan with the aid of a more seasoned colleague\, Flip Zimmerman. \nTogether\, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream. \n  \nSponsored by the Peace Committee\nRuntime: 134 minutes \n  \n  \n\nAbout the 2019 Summer Film Festival\nEach year\, the ELPC Mission Board and Mission Committees sponsor and host a summer film series. SUMMARY:ELPC Celebrates Anthony Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Special Fellowship Time honoring Anthony Williams. \nAnthony Williams has served as a youth worker at ELPC for over 18 years. As an integral part of our youth ministry team\, Mr. Anthony has nurtured the faith of generations of teens at ELPC\, chaperoned dozens of Mission Trips and retreats\, led a basketball ministry for youth in the community\, and supported Confirmands on their journey to adult membership at ELPC. \nWhether through an interactive Bible Study or a game of Spades\, Mr. Anthony has taught the love of God in Christ to all\, and has modeled what it means to put one’s faith in action. Late this spring\, Mr. Anthony was named Head of School of The Neighborhood Academy. With this exciting transition in his life\, Mr. Anthony has discerned the need to step down from his role at ELPC to dedicate his time and energy to his new position. \nWe give thanks for Mr. Anthony – for his impact on the lives of many here at ELPC and at TNA. We will celebrate his 18 years of service during a special fellowship time in his honor\, following the 10 AM worship service on August 18. Please join us to thank him and wish him well on the next leg of his journey! \nIf you can’t be there\, send a few words of well-wishes\, a picture or a fun memory that we’ll include in a gift to him … send photos and or memories to HeatherS@coh.net.

SUMMARY:Renewable Energy Fair
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to find out how to switch to all renewable electricity? Are you trying to decide whether solar panels would work on your house? Do you know how to measure your carbon footprint? \nTo find answers to these questions and other energy-use matters\, you are invited to attend a Renewable Energy Fair following Sanctuary worship. Representatives from renewable energy suppliers will be available to answer your questions and help you make the switch. There also will be a solar energy adviser. Please bring your electric bill. \nAnother important action is to calculate your carbon footprint. Information and help will be provided\, and as well as an explanation of the carbon offset concept. For example\, offset your air travel by paying into a project that reduces CO2 emissions by an equivalent amount. If you know your yearly electricity use (in kWh\, from the electric company)\, your yearly gas use (in MCF or therms\, from the gas company)\, and approximate annual miles traveled\, the Environmental Team can help you determine your carbon footprint. \nA light lunch will be provided. For more information\, contact Nancy Heastings at n.heastings@comcast.net. \nHosted by the Environmental Team of the Justice Committee

SUMMARY:The de Chardin Project
DESCRIPTION:A Love Story About the Origins of the Universe\nThe de Chardin Project is a play about Jesuit priest\, scientist\, and philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955). It won a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play (Independent Category). \nSilenced and exiled by the church\, de Chardin\, a renowned paleontologist\, crossed continents searching for the missing link between his love for God and his love of Science. His groundbreaking discoveries in human evolution transcended barriers between Faith and Science. Today\, his work is regarded as having changed the conversation about cosmology\, evolution\, and theology. \nIn the play\, de Chardin\, having suffered a cerebral hemorrhage\, finds himself beyond the physical world and engaged with a mysterious guide who leads him on the ultimate adventure: the excavation of himself. \nWe are delighted to be joined by the playwright\, Adam Seybold (son of ELPC members Kevin and Virginia Seybold)\, and his wife\, actress Kate Fenton\, for a dramatic reading of this fascinating exploration of life\, science and faith! \nClick here to purchase tickets online. \n\nReview of the De Chardin Project from NOW Toronto (excerpted)\nScience and religion are often on opposing sides\, especially around something like the creationism vs. evolution debate. Adam Seybold’s The De Chardin Project offers up a fascinating real-life figure who defies any reductive labels. \nPierre Teilhard de Chardin was a Jesuit priest\, a paleontologist and a geologist. When we first meet him\, he’s stuck in a sort of limbo and being visited by a mysterious Death figure. Then we flash back to moments in his peripatetic life: digging for fossils in Egypt\, fighting the Hun during WWI and\, in Zhoukoudian\, China\, taking part in the expedition team involved in the historic Peking Man find. (The Death Figure) is present in each of these scenes\, morphing effortlessly from a series of mothers to a frightened soldier to\, in one of the most moving sequences\, an American artist in love with de Chardin as the Japanese invade Peking. \nSeybold’s beautifully detailed and suggestive script touches on biographical moments\, but not in a pedantic way. It’s open-hearted and open-minded and complex\, befitting a man with so many dimensions. \nBy Glenn Sumi\nNOWToronto.com\nDecember 3\, 2014

SUMMARY:Holiday Shopping in the Name of Love!
DESCRIPTION:Join us to get your Christmas shopping started early at Ten Thousand Villages (5820 Forbes Ave.) on Monday\, December 2\, 6 pm. Ten Thousand Villages is an independent nonprofit organization that supports artisans from around the globe by establishing a sustainable market for their products in North America. This special shopping event supports these artisans far away\, as well as the ELPC Thanksgiving Food Ministry\, which supports those in our midst who are in need. Without this support\, some of these artisans would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. \nWe need the congregation’s help to make this event a success! ELPC Deacons will be present to offer snacks and refreshments to shoppers. We have had great turnout for this event over the past several years\, and we look forward to another busy night. \nQuestions? Call ELPC Deacon Tucker Ferda at 406.249.9811.
