SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:What is forest bathing? Well\, it is not a nature walk or a fitness hike. It is a 60-minute\, guided visit into the natural world\, where we will slow down\, awaken our senses\, and nurture our relationship with nature. Through a series of invitations\, we will find our own ways of connecting with nature as we relax into being present with the sights\, smells\, sounds\, textures\, and tastes of the woods. There’s no rush and there’s no right or wrong way to do it. \nJoin us in ELPC’s Courtyard to explore the hidden beauty found within the space’s architecture\, plants\, trees\, and flowers—even amidst winter. We will have a fire for warming as we slowly reflect on the beauty of the natural world. We will sit a lot and move slowly\, so dress appropriately and consider bringing a blanket. \nRSVP to Pastor BJ by Wednesday\, February 23.

SUMMARY:Letter from Birmingham Jail | Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Following Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, March 13\, the Facing Systemic Racism Committee will present our second session on the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr’s\, Letter from Birmingham Jail. Led by Dr. Beverly Harris-Schenz\, we will explore a summary of one of the seminal issues in Dr. King’s letter: “just” vs “unjust” laws. \nDr. King explains the use of “legality” in authoritarian societies\, as a means to control and discriminate against marginalized people. Such “laws” apply to those groups\, but rarely to those in authority. As examples\, Dr. King cites laws used by segregationists in Alabama to prevent Blacks from voting; the laws of Nebuchadnezzer\, which led Shadrach\, Meschach\, and Abednego to follow a higher moral law; as well as the laws employed by Hitler to discriminate and isolate Jews\, and those in Hungary against their freedom fighters. \nThere is no dearth of other historical examples. However\, our discussion will focus primarily on how “unjust” laws have been used in the past and are currently used in our country to discriminate against and marginalize people of color. This presentation will be followed by small group discussions\, both in person and on Zoom. \nJoin us in person in the Social Hall or online via Zoom. You also may call in by dialing 301.715.8592 and entering meeting ID 841 7387 8710 and passcode 442300 when prompted. \nJoin via Zoom

SUMMARY:Letter from Birminham Jail | Session 3
DESCRIPTION:Are We a Social Club or Justice Seekers? \nIn his prophetic Letter From Birmingham Jail\, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, expressed frustration with white moderates\, including clergy who were critical of civil rights efforts. King likened their complacency to the outright hostility of white supremacists\, writing\, “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” King asserted that the white church needed to take a principled stand or risk being “dismissed as an irrelevant social club.” \nHow and where does that same complacency and belief in “all things being done decently and in order” (a Biblical reference in chapter 8 of the PC(USA) Book of Order) resonate in the church today? When/how/why should we step out of our traditional white culture comfort zones to assure that we are indeed living out being a Matthew 25 church? What should we physically\, culturally\, and financially divest from in order to invest in a future that fully embraces all of our siblings who enter our building\, those who are in our neighborhood and throughout our denomination? Those are big questions that demand our attention and our discernment. \nOur very future is at stake. Let us continue the conversation on Zoom on Saturday\, April 9\, 6 pm\, with the third and final deep dive into King’s letter. We will be led by the Rev. Paul Roberts\, co-pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church\, and members of the ELPC Facing Systemic Racism Committee. \nJoin us in person in the Social Hall or online via Zoom. You also may call in by dialing 301.715.8592 and entering meeting ID 846 9026 2039 and passcode 950626 when prompted. \nJoin via Zoom

SUMMARY:Decolonizing our Spiritual Practices
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 4\, 9 am–3pm\, at ELPC or on Zoom for a day of teaching\, conversation\, and spiritual practice\, as we seek to continue in our journey to be a Matthew 25 church and decolonize our spiritual practices. \nWe will be led by Leeann Shaw Younger. Under her leadership\, we will look at the world and the story of Jesus through the eyes of those impacted by the work of colonial missionaries here in the U.S. and around the world. We will deepen our relationship with the Divine by considering how we might begin to unlearn the spiritual practices we’ve inherited that ignore and even denigrate the way indigenous cultures see the world and the Divine. We will consider what we can learn about the story of Jesus through the eyes of those finding a story of liberation and healing for both our human and other-than-human relatives. \nRSVP to Norma Meyer at 412.441.3800 x111 by Sunday\, May 29. The suggested donation is $10 (lunch included). \nJoin us at ELPC in the McKelvy Room or online by clicking the button below. Enter meeting ID 835 6152 8224 and passcode 579308 if prompted. \nJoin Via Zoom \n\nAbout Our Facilitator\nLeeann Shaw Younger is the lead pastor of Cityview Church in Pittsburgh’s East Deutschtown/Spring Garden neighborhood. She co-founded the Evangelical Covenant Church congregation in 2010 with her husband\, Wayne. Leeann has a breadth of vocational experiences in her background as a nonprofit executive leader\, campus minster\, and pastor\, but most recently has enjoyed her role as a Democratic committeewoman. She is in the process of completing a Master of Theological Studies\, with a focus on decolonizing church practice from the Pacific School of Religion.

SUMMARY:Film Screening | Torture in Our Name
DESCRIPTION:The Justice Committee invites you to a screening of Torture in Our Name following worship on Sunday\, July 17\, in the Garth Overlook Room. Snacks will be provided. \nIn this compelling 35-minute documentary for faith audiences\, filmmaker Matthew Gossage showcases the tenacity and resilience of people who have faced the torture of solitary confinement first-hand and are working to end it once and for all. \nThe film traces the stories of state organizers in Louisiana\, New Jersey\, and New York\, where survivors of solitary and their allies have mounted successful legislative campaigns in their respective states. New Jersey (2019) and New York (2021) were the first two states in the nation to legislate bans on long-term isolated confinement. Learn more about the film at nrcat.org. \nIf you’d like to join us virtually on Zoom\, click the button below\, or you may call in by dialing 301.715.8592. SUMMARY:Film Screening | Day of a Stranger
DESCRIPTION:Join the Spiritual Life Committee in the Garth Overlook Room following worship on Sunday\, July 24\, to view and discuss Day of a Stranger (2021)\, a short film about Trappist monk Thomas Merton\, one of the most influential spiritual writers of the 20th century. \nThrough rare audio recordings\, the film explores the final years of Merton’s life\, from 1965–1968\, when he lived as a hermit in the Kentucky woods. Interweaving meditative images of his hermitage nestled deep in the woods of Kentucky and rare audio recordings he made as a hermit; the film pieces together a first-person narrative of one of the 20th century’s most brilliant minds. Learn more at DayOfaStranger.com. \nRSVP to Pastor BJ at BJW@coh.net by Saturday\, July 23.
