In April 2016\, he was officially recognized and inducted as a Pittsburgh Rock ’n Roll Legend at an award ceremony sponsored by the Cancer Caring Center of Pittsburgh. Members of the Billy Price Band are Steve Delach (guitar)\, Tom Valentine (bass)\, Dave Dodd (drums)\, Jimmy Britton (keyboards)\, and Eric DeFade (tenor sax). Billy Price first attracted national attention during his three-year association with guitarist Roy Buchanan. Price is the vocalist on two of Buchanan’s LPs\, That’s What I’m Here For and Livestock. Price assembled Billy Price and the Keystone Rhythm Band in 1977. Before their breakup in 1990\, the band recorded four critically acclaimed LPs and developed a reputation as one of the most exciting touring bands in the U.S. With the Keystone Rhythm Band\, the Billy Price Band\, and solo projects\, Billy Price has recorded and released a total of 15 albums\, CDs\, and DVDs. His album This Time for Real\, with recently deceased Chicago soul singer Otis Clay\, received a 2016 Blues Music Award by the Blues Foundation of Memphis\, Tennessee in the category of Best Soul Blues Album. A live recording of the Billy Price Band\, Alive and Strange\, was released by Nola Blues/Vizztone Label Group in April 2017.\n\nABOUT AFRO YAQUI MUSIC COLLECTIVE \nHope Academy teaching artists\, Ben Barson and Gizelxanath Rodriguez\, bring jazz\, funk and soul into dialogue with indigenous music of the 21st century. The Afro Yaqui Music Collective (AYMC) is a 9-piece outfit which descends from the ensembles of Guggenhiem award winner Fred Ho\, whose work was influenced by West African\, global Indigenous and East Asian musics. The AYMC is co-led by Gizelxanath Rodriguez\, an internationally performing soprano and activist\, who is also a winner of the 2014 ACE Award. The band is also led by her partner\, Ben Barson\, Fred Ho’s Baritone protege who “he felt has the heft and sound to represent [Ho’s] assertive approach (The New York Times).” Special guest artist\, Havana – based musician Albertico Lescay.\n \n  \nABOUT HOPE ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND THE ARTS \nHope Academy of Music and the Arts\, an outreach program of East Liberty Presbyterian Church\, offers a safe place where young people of diverse racial\, ethnic\, cultural\, socioeconomic\, religious and linguistic backgrounds can further their personal and artistic growth through the study and performance of theater\, dance and music. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive artistic community that provides deep arts instruction through a sequential and progressive program; that supports the personal and artistic growth of students and teaching artists\, alike; and contributes to our community’s positive growth and cultural vibrancy. Over 350 young people and their families participate in Hope Academy’s programs throughout the year. \n  \nABOUT KARL SELLNER \nFrom an early age\, Karl Jacob Sellner was simply captivated by his grandfather John Alden’s music\, foreshadowing his life-long love of the performing arts.  This passion was nurtured by his family and by his many experiences as a student of Hope Academy. As a teen and young adult\, Karl became an accomplished guitar player and lyricist.  As with his love of music\, Karl found the other things he cared about early in life\, including his wife Shelby and his calling to join the US Army to serve\, like his grandfather had during WWII.  Like so many gifted musicians before him\, Karl’s light was also shadowed by bi-polar disorder. On\, September 11\, 2016 Karl’s pain was too much and he ended his life.  The support of the Hope Academy community was treasured by his parents and 6 siblings during this time of grief and together they channeled this sadness into the Karl Jacob Sellner Memorial Fund for Hope Academy.  This fund honors his memory and ensures that his  love of music will live on through the beautiful voices\, playing of various instruments\, dance and acting of children for many years to come.

SUMMARY:Orion Quartet with Tara O'Connor Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a concert featuring Orion Quartet with Tara O’Connor\, flute. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then RSVP here by Sunday\, October 1. \nAbout The Artists:\nThe Orion Quartet\nDaniel Phillips (Violin); Todd Phillips (Violin); Steven Tenenbom (Viola); Timothy Eddy (Cello) \nSince its inception\, the Orion Quartet has been consistently praised for the extraordinary musical integrity it brings to performances\, offering diverse programs that juxtapose classic works of the standard quartet literature with masterworks by twentieth and twenty-first century composers. The Quartet remains on the cutting edge of programming with wide-ranging commissions from composers Chick Corea\, Brett Dean\, David Del Tredici\, Alexander Goehr\, Thierry Lancino\, John Harbison\, Leon Kirchner\, Marc Neikrug\, Lowell Liebermann\, Peter Lieberson and Wynton Marsalis\, and enjoys a creative partnership with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. The members of the Orion String Quartet—violinists Daniel Phillips and Todd Phillips (brothers who share the first violin chair equally)\, violist Steven Tenenbom and cellist Timothy Eddy—have worked closely with such legendary figures as Pablo Casals\, Sir András Schiff\, Rudolf Serkin\, Isaac Stern\, Pinchas Zukerman\, Peter Serkin\, members of TASHI and the Beaux Arts Trio\, as well as the Budapest\, Végh\, Galimir and Guarneri String Quartets. \nFormed in 1987\, the Quartet chose its name from the Orion constellation as a metaphor for the unique personality each musician brings to the group in its collective pursuit of the highest musical ideals. \nTara Helen O’Connor\, flute\nTara Helen O’Connor is a charismatic performer noted for her artistic depth\, brilliant technique\, and colorful tone spanning every musical era. Winner of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a two-time Grammy nominee\, she is now a season artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. A Wm. S. Haynes flute artist\, Tara regularly participates in the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival\, Music@Menlo\, the Chamber Music Festival of the Bluegrass\, Spoleto USA\, Chamber Music Northwest\, Mainly Mozart Festival\, Music from Angel Fire\, the Banff Centre\, the Great Mountains Music Festival\, Chesapeake Music Festival and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. \nA much sought after chamber musician and soloist\, Tara is a founding member of the Naumburg Award-winning New Millennium Ensemble\, a member of the woodwind quintet Windscape and the legendary Bach Aria Group. She has premiered hundreds of new works and has collaborated with the Orion String Quartet\, St. Lawrence Quartet and Emerson Quartet. Tara has appeared on A&E’s Breakfast with the Arts\, Live from Lincoln Center and has recorded for Deutsche Gramophon\, EMI Classics\, Koch International\, CMS Studio Recordings with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Bridge Records. \nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. Since music is mostly a listening activity\, any extra sounds that are not part of the music can get in the way and will distract and disturb the musicians and other audience members. \nBefore the Concert\nWear something you might wear to a special event – because it is!. Please don’t wear anything that might be distracting (light up shoes\, clanging jewelry\, etc)\nArrive no later than 7:00 pm to get your tickets. \nBefore You Take Your Seat\nTake care of all rest room needs.\nLeave all food\, drink\, and gum outside\, in the lobby.\nLeave all cameras and recording devices outside\, as well. There are strict copyright guidelines about recording concerts.\nTurn off all cell phones\, pagers\, ipads\, watch sounds\, alarms\, or anything that might make a noise. The only sounds that should be heard are the ones that appear in the musical score (and the audience reaction after the music). \nOnce You Take Your Seat\nA parent or guardian must sit next to each child.\nRemain seated and quiet while the musicians are playing. Do not get up during the concert or change seats.\nNo talking\, whispering\, sighing\, tapping or kicking feet\, or rattling of programs or papers.\nBe sure to sit without fidgeting so you don’t distract your neighbors or the performers on stage. \nFeel free to leave during intermission\, if this is a late night for your children; and if they fall asleep during the concert\, that’s okay too. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!

Give yourselves enough time to navigate around the roadblock. \nOther East Liberty events that day include the 2nd Annual Harvest Fest on Highland\, Penn Center and Baum\, and the 9th Annual Halloween Mayhem at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater.

SUMMARY:Sound & Spirituality
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian life—like that of virtually every other faith—is saturated with sound. Bells call us to worship\, we sing our praises to God\, and we are moved by beautiful anthems with accompaniment by organ\, piano\, and other instruments. We clap our appreciation; utter aloud prayers and liturgy; and listen to sermons\, teachers\, and the scripture being read. We hear these sounds with our ears and reflect on them with brains; but the sound itself also has an effect upon who we are and what and how we believe. Scientists study the actual physical effects of differing sound waves on matter\, and mystics have long acknowledged the impact of sound\, including the sound of silence\, on the open-hearted. \nJoin the Spiritual Life Committee this year as we explore the science and spiritual dimensions of sound in both our own tradition and that of other faiths. Our study begins on Sun.\, Oct. 29\, following Sanctuary worship\, as we are joined by Dr. Elaine Abbott\, director of the Music Therapy department at Duquesne University\, as she demonstrates the healing effect of music. A light lunch will be served.

SUMMARY:Sean Jones and Friends Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a concert featuring Classical Sean Jones and Friends. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then RSVP here by Sunday\, November 18. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nSean Jones\nMusic and spirituality have always been fully intertwined in the artistic vision of trumpeter\, composer\, educator and activist Sean Jones. Singing and performing as a child with the church choir in his hometown of Warren\, Ohio\, Sean switched from the drums to the trumpet upon his first exposure to Miles Davis at the age of 10. Twenty-five years later\, he still cites Miles’ overall artistic vision and purity of sound as his greatest personal influence. But it was another immortal visionary who had a most profound impact when Sean was a 19-year old student at Youngstown State University – the magnificent John Coltrane through his masterpiece\, A Love Supreme. Says Jones\, “All at once\, everything just came together for me. My past\, my present\, my future. I knew the course I needed to pursue.” Already exhibiting a superb control of the instrument through his private studies with master trumpeter and educator Esotto Pellegrini and his intensive listening to his other primary influences\, Woody Shaw\, Freddie Hubbard and Clifford Brown\, the young trumpeter committed himself to artistic excellence the pursuit of transcendence. Five years later\, after receiving his Master’s Degree from Rutgers University\, Sean had a 6-month stint with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. This marked the beginning of a relationship with Wynton Marsalis\, whose personal work ethic and ability to break barriers had already made a significant impact on the emerging artist. Wynton offered Sean a permanent position as lead trumpeter and Jones remained there until 2010. A highly respected and in-demand musician even while at Rutgers\, Sean was prominently featured with a number of artists\, recording and/or performing with many major figures\, including Illinois Jacquet\, Jimmy Heath\, Frank Foster\, Nancy Wilson\, Dianne Reeves\, Gerald Wilson and Marcus Miller. The relationship with Miller led to another highly impacting experience when Sean was selected by Miller\, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for their Tribute to Miles tour in 2011. The trust and support of those giants led Sean to a decision to focus on performing with his own ensembles. Already touring and performing regularly with his own groups while at Lincoln Center\, Sean also began his longtime relationship with Mack Avenue Records\, for whom he has just released his seventh recording: im.pro.vise = never before seen. He’s currently performing with the quartet on his latest CD\, who have been working together since 2007 – with pianist Orrin Evans\, bassist Luques Curtis and drummer Obed Calvaire. But Sean is also looking toward projects with new and larger ensembles\, including orchestras. In addition\, he’s planning on more forays into the world of Western classical music\, while working on solidifying his pedagogy and increasing his lecturing and writing activities. Heavily involved in education\, Sean has recently joined the Berklee College of Music’s distinguished faculty as the Chair of the Brass Department. He has also taught at Duquesne University in his adopted hometown of Pittsburgh and at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music\, while regularly offering master classes and clinics all around the world. In addition\, Sean also serves as Artistic Director of both the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras and is working toward organizing the various Jazz orchestras all over the country. Sean is current Artist-in-Residence at San Francisco Performances and is a member of The SF JAZZ Collective. Clearly a passionately committed\, heavily focused and deeply spiritual man\, Sean relies upon his serious study of philosophy – especially that of 13th century theologian and mystic Meister Eckhardt; and Don Miguel Ruiz\, whose vision is drawn from the ancient wisdom of the Toltec native people of Southern Mexico – to fuel the pursuit of his expansive and generous vision. Sean currently lives in Boston with his wife Stacey. \n  \nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!Sean

SUMMARY:Interfaith Panel on the Use of Sound in Faith
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian life—like that of virtually every other faith—is saturated with sound. Bells call us to worship\, we sing our praises to God\, and are moved by beautiful anthems to the accompaniment of organ\, piano\, and other instruments. We clap our appreciation\, utter aloud prayers and liturgy\, and\, of course\, we listen to sermons\, teachers\, and the words of others. \nAll of these sounds have an effect upon who we are\, as well as what and how we believe. Scientists study the actual physical effects of differing sound waves on matter\, and mystics have long acknowledged the impact of sound\, including the sound of silence on the open heart. \nJoin the Spiritual Life Committee in the Social Hall as we explore the science and spiritual dimensions of sound in our own tradition and that of other faiths.

SUMMARY:Faith\, Science\, and Our Spiritual Life
DESCRIPTION:What do the Universe and God have in common? If evolution is true\, does that leave room for God? If I believe in God does that mean I have to deny physics? Got questions? So do we! \nJoin us as we discuss the intersection between the science of our universe and our understanding of the Divine\, led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan. We read\, watch videos\, and try to make meaning of this precious moment which we share. You are welcome whether or not you have read\, studied\, or asked these questions before. Come join the conversation!

SUMMARY:Fellowship Time to Support DACA
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Justice Committee will hold a letter-writing\, petition-signing\, and tweeting advocacy campaign to support the DACA/DreamAct during Fellowship Time following worship on Sun.\, Jan. 28. Please join us in the Whitfield Lobby (ground floor) to find out how you can best lend your support. We will have the materials you need and some light snacks. \nThe DACA program was implemented in 2012 to provide an opportunity for some children who arrived in the U.S. illegally to stay in the country legally. The roughly 800\,000 participants in the program—commonly referred to as Dreamers—receive a range of benefits\, including the ability to acquire work permits\, eligibility for in-state tuition\, and access to state-subsided health care. The Dreamers\, who fall between the ages of 16–35\, must be enrolled in high school or already have earned a diploma or G.E.D. to qualify. Participants can renew their status every two years. \nClick here for more information.
