SUMMARY:June Solstice Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Frick Park on Saturday\, June 25\, 6–9 pm\, for a time of June Solstice Forest Bathing and mark the beginning of summer\, increased daylight\, and warmth! If you are unfamiliar with forest bathing\, it is simply mindfulness in nature as we bathe in the health-boosting benefits of the forest. \nGuided by Sandi Miller\, we’ll enjoy a three-hour walk and experience a series of invitations to slow down\, open our senses\, and cultivate an embodied relationship between ourselves and the natural world. Throughout the walk\, we’ll have opportunities to share our experiences. We’ll  conclude with a cup of tea made from the forest. There’s no right or wrong way to practice Forest Bathing\, so come as you are; it’s all welcome in the forest. (We will be walking less than one mile\, but there are some hills involved.) \nRegister with Norma Meyer at 412.441.3800 x111 by Wednesday\, June 22. The event is limited to 12 people.

SUMMARY:Film Screening | Torture in Our Name
DESCRIPTION:The Justice Committee invites you to a screening of Torture in Our Name following worship on Sunday\, July 17\, in the Garth Overlook Room. Snacks will be provided. \nIn this compelling 35-minute documentary for faith audiences\, filmmaker Matthew Gossage showcases the tenacity and resilience of people who have faced the torture of solitary confinement first-hand and are working to end it once and for all. \nThe film traces the stories of state organizers in Louisiana\, New Jersey\, and New York\, where survivors of solitary and their allies have mounted successful legislative campaigns in their respective states. New Jersey (2019) and New York (2021) were the first two states in the nation to legislate bans on long-term isolated confinement. Learn more about the film at nrcat.org. \nIf you’d like to join us virtually on Zoom\, click the button below\, or you may call in by dialing 301.715.8592. Enter meeting ID 813 9907 9756 and passcode 227411 when prompted. \nJoin via Zoom

SUMMARY:Film Screening | Day of a Stranger
DESCRIPTION:Join the Spiritual Life Committee in the Garth Overlook Room following worship on Sunday\, July 24\, to view and discuss Day of a Stranger (2021)\, a short film about Trappist monk Thomas Merton\, one of the most influential spiritual writers of the 20th century. \nThrough rare audio recordings\, the film explores the final years of Merton’s life\, from 1965–1968\, when he lived as a hermit in the Kentucky woods. Interweaving meditative images of his hermitage nestled deep in the woods of Kentucky and rare audio recordings he made as a hermit; the film pieces together a first-person narrative of one of the 20th century’s most brilliant minds. Learn more at DayOfaStranger.com. \nRSVP to Pastor BJ at BJW@coh.net by Saturday\, July 23.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion | Parable of the Sower
DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Team of the Justice Committee has selected Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler as its next book. You’re invited to read it and join us for a discussion on Thursday\, August 25\, 7 pm\, led Nancy Heastings and Penn Hackney online via Zoom. For more details\, please contact Nancy Heastings. \nPublished in 1993\, this climate sci-fi is set in 2024 California. The story’s lead character is a 15-year-old Black girl whose father is a preacher. Global climate change and economic crises have led to social chaos. Global warming has brought drought and rising seawater. The middle class and working poor live in gated neighborhoods\, where they fend off the homeless with guns and walls. Fresh water is scarce and is as valuable as money. Fires are common. Public schools are being privatized\, as are whole towns. In this atmosphere\, a Presidential candidate named Christopher Donner is elected based on his promises to dismantle government programs and bring back jobs. \nThe book has had a resurgence and second-read reviewers comment\, “But for sheer peculiar prescience\, Butler’s novel and its sequel (Parable of the Talents) may be unmatched.” \nFor some writers\, science fiction serves as means to delve into fantasy. But for Butler\, it largely served as a vehicle to address issues facing humanity. It was this passionate interest in the human experience that imbued her work with a certain depth and complexity. Her books blended elements of science fiction and African American spiritualism.

SUMMARY:Karl Sellner Memorial Benefit 2022
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for what is sure to be a great evening of music\, food\, raffles\, games\, and friendship in remembrance of former Hope Academy student\, Karl Sellner. All proceeds from the event will go to a scholarship at Hope Academy. \nThis fund honors his memory and ensures that his love of music will live on through the beautiful voices\, playing of various instruments\, dance and acting of children for many years to come. \nIf you are unable to make it to the event\, but would like to make a donation to Hope Academy’s Scholarship Fund (select the Karl Sellner Memorial option) or donate an item for the auction\, click the button below. \nClick Here  \n\nABOUT KARL SELLNER \nFrom an early age\, Karl Jacob Sellner was simply captivated by his grandfather John Alden’s music\, foreshadowing his life-long love of the performing arts. This passion was nurtured by his family and by his many experiences as a student of Hope Academy. As a teen and young adult\, Karl became an accomplished guitar player and lyricist. As with his love of music\, Karl found the other things he cared about early in life\, including his wife Shelby\, and his calling to join the US Army to serve\, like his grandfather had during WWII. Like so many gifted musicians before him\, Karl’s light was also shadowed by bi-polar disorder. On\, September 11\, 2016\, Karl’s pain was too much and he ended his life. The support of the Hope Academy community was treasured by his parents and 6 siblings during this time of grief\, and together\, they channeled this sadness into the Karl Jacob Sellner Memorial Fund for Hope Academy. This fund honors his memory and ensures that his love of music will live on through the beautiful voices\, playing of various instruments\, dance and acting of children for many years to come. \nABOUT HOPE ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND THE ARTS \nHope Academy of Music and the Arts\, an outreach program of East Liberty Presbyterian Church\, offers a safe place where young people of diverse racial\, ethnic\, cultural\, socioeconomic\, religious and linguistic backgrounds can further their personal and artistic growth through the study and performance of theater\, dance and music. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive artistic community that provides deep arts instruction through a sequential and progressive program; that supports the personal and artistic growth of students and teaching artists\, alike; and contributes to our community’s positive growth and cultural vibrancy. Over 350 young people and their families participate in Hope Academy’s programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Lessons and Practices of Revolutionary Love
DESCRIPTION:What is Revolutionary Love you ask? According to Valarie Kaur\, “revolutionary love is an orientation to the world and to the work of justice that is most successfully practiced in community. It is more than emotion or feeling. It is the ongoing choice to labor for others\, opponents\, and ourselves.” \nThe Spiritual Life Committee invites you to learn more about Revolutionary Love on Thursdays\, September 15–November 17\, 5:30–7 pm. A light meal will be provided. \nDrawing upon Kaur’s book\, See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love\, we will discover together revolutionary love as a praxis for personal\, spiritual\, and political\, transformation. We will examine stories\, theories\, and practices from writers\, scholars\, activists\, and practitioners whose work has informed the framework of revolutionary love. We will connect these to historical contexts and contemporary social issues and concerns. We will engage in personal spiritual practices to challenge power inequalities\, dismantle unjust institutions\, and create a world that honors the humanity of us all. And each week\, will practice communal learning\, personal and silent reflection\, and invitations to action. \nThe outline of her spiritual practice paradigm can be seen in the compass on the right\, with a focus on loving others\, opponents and ourselves. We will explore one of these each week. There are corresponding: \nIt is recommended that you begin reading her book before we start. Limited copies are available. Contact Pastor BJ for more information. \nWatch Valarie Kaur’s TED Talk to get a sense of the arch and aim of our time together.
