SUMMARY:Lessons and Practices of Revolutionary Love
DESCRIPTION:What is Revolutionary Love you ask? According to Valarie Kaur\, “revolutionary love is an orientation to the world and to the work of justice that is most successfully practiced in community. It is more than emotion or feeling. It is the ongoing choice to labor for others\, opponents\, and ourselves.” \nThe Spiritual Life Committee invites you to learn more about Revolutionary Love on Thursdays\, September 15–November 17\, 5:30–7 pm. A light meal will be provided. \nDrawing upon Kaur’s book\, See No Stranger: A Memoir and Manifesto of Revolutionary Love\, we will discover together revolutionary love as a praxis for personal\, spiritual\, and political\, transformation. We will examine stories\, theories\, and practices from writers\, scholars\, activists\, and practitioners whose work has informed the framework of revolutionary love. We will connect these to historical contexts and contemporary social issues and concerns. We will engage in personal spiritual practices to challenge power inequalities\, dismantle unjust institutions\, and create a world that honors the humanity of us all. And each week\, will practice communal learning\, personal and silent reflection\, and invitations to action. \nThe outline of her spiritual practice paradigm can be seen in the compass on the right\, with a focus on loving others\, opponents and ourselves. We will explore one of these each week. There are corresponding: \nIt is recommended that you begin reading her book before we start. Limited copies are available. SUMMARY:Christmas Pageant: Back to Go Forward
DESCRIPTION:During the Christmas season\, we hold together a past story of God’s love incarnate with the present moment of our day—and our call to follow the Prince of Peace. Even in scripture\, the message of Jesus’ birth invites us to do some “time traveling”—through the words of many prophets\, the anointing of an unlikely king\, a family tree filled with surprising characters\, the appearance of angels\, and a long journey to Bethlehem. \nOn Sunday\, December 18\, 10 am\, kids of all ages will guide us in a re-telling of this special story that transcends time and space\, so that we might see that the babe born in a Bethlehem manger is also God-with-Us\, too. Once more\, our script has been written by the Rev. Ashley DeTar Birt. All participants should arrive by 9:30 am\, to get costumes on and prepare for the pageant. \nJoin us after the Pageant for a Hot Chocolate Reception in the McKelvey Room! Sign up to bring a breakfast bread to share (sliced and ready to serve) by emailing Sara Hackett. \nPageant Rehearsal \nPageant rehearsal will be held on Saturday\, December 17\, 9:30–11 am. Children should arrive between 9:30–10 am\, and go to their Church School classrooms to put on their costumes. Middle school youth should arrive at 9:30 am\, and report to the Sanctuary to practice their speaking parts.

At the same time\, legislators and the Biden Administration are to release $369 billion for “Energy Security and Climate Change\,” part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, offering rebates\, tax incentives\, and other programs to help households conserve energy and to electrify. \nWhat is in the programs and how can you take advantage of them? Join the Environmental Team of Justice Committee following worship on Sunday\, January 22\, to learn about the actions we can take right away or plan to take later in 2023\, when the remaining regulations are finalized. \nOverall\, 42% of our energy-related emissions stem from decisions we make around our kitchen tables: what kind of transportation we use\, how we heat the air and water in our homes\, cook our food\, and dry our clothes. The only way to remove these emissions is to have our homes run on machines with plugs\, not pipes. It is a brutally honest look at how mismanagement\, chemical spills\, mishandling of toxic waste and sludge have created the perfect storm in terms of damaging water systems in the United States. \nIn an NPR interview\, the following review was given: “An impeccably researched book that brings science\, court cases\, depositions\, interviews\, history\, and personal experience to the table to make strong points about the dire state of many of our water systems—and the consequences of it. SUMMARY:Spring Solstice Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Dark Hollow Woods Park in Verona on Saturday\, March 18\, 12–2 pm\, for a peaceful Forest Bathing walk as we enjoy the magic at the beginning of spring. We will meander in the woods and look for signs of awakening life. Slowing down will give us a chance to notice the little changes popping up to signal the coming of warmer weather. \nWe are limited to 10 participants. Please RSVP to Sandi Miller at samellaannmiller@gmail.com by Sunday\, March 12. \nDress appropriately for the weather and bring an umbrella if rain is expected. The trail may be muddy in places. Parking is limited\, so please carpool.
