DESCRIPTION:ELPC’s Cathedral Concerts series will present I Go On Singing: Paul Robeson’s Life in Word and Song by Anthony Brown\, baritone\, on Sunday\, March 5\, 3 pm. \nI Go On Singing tells Paul Robeson’s story in his own words\, using many first-hand accounts from his autobiography\, Here I Stand. The multi-media musical documentary traces his humble beginnings as a preacher’s son in Princeton\, New Jersey\, to his international celebrity as an advocate for peace and justice. \nThe performance will bring music and history alive with equal parts documentary and live concert experience. Musical numbers range from spirituals to Broadway\, and include Robeson’s original arrangements of favorites like “Wade in the Water\,” “Ol’ Man River\,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So\,” “Water Boy\,” and many others. \nThe concert is free\, but a freewill offering will be received. SUMMARY:Taking Action on Soot Pollution Standards
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently proposing to tighten regulations on soot—a mix of metals\, organic chemicals\, and acidic substances in particles that are so small\, they can be inhaled deeply into our lungs and enter our bloodstreams. Emitted by power plants and the tailpipes of cars and trucks\, soot’s health burden falls most heavily on communities of color and the poor. Children; the elderly; and people with asthma\, other respiratory\, and heart conditions are particularly vulnerable. \nEnacting the strongest limit could save 19\,000 lives a year! We need to tell the EPA to develop the strongest possible soot standard to ensure clean air. Interfaith Power and Light\, a faith-based environmental group\, has a letter on soot that you can send to the EPA at tiny.cc/epa-letter. \nThe Environmental Team of the Justice Committee invites you to act to protect our climate and our health\, and advance environmental justice. Join us in the Garth Overlook Room following worship on Sunday\, March 19\, to learn more and sign a petition. Assistance also will be available to help you submit a comment through the EPA website. Comments to the EPA are due by Tuesday\, March 28.

Throughout the book\, case studies responding to ethical challenges give specific examples of successful ways forward. Inspired by Rachel Carson’s voice of precaution in protecting the Earth\, this is a book about empowerment and hope. \nDeMarco offers her own analysis of the many pathways open to us to create a sustainable future—an ethic built on cooperation rather than exploitation. SUMMARY:Passive House Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Environmental Team of the Justice Committee on a tour of one of the most energy efficient homes in the region: Passive House-certified Squirrel Hill Duplex\, located at 2883 Fernwald Rd. Finished in 2017 by ELPC congregants Lucy de Barbaro and Ayres Freitas\, this home reduces heating and cooling by 80% compared to traditional construction\, manages all rainwater on site\, has a small green roof and is fully powered by solar energy. The home holds a gold label from the National Green Building Standard. \nThere will be something of interest for those well versed in these various environmental initiatives and those new to these topics\, and takeaways for your own environmental action at home. \nThe tours will be offered on Sunday\, May 21\, 2 pm\, and Sunday\, June 4\, 4 pm. SUMMARY:Pride History Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join the ELPC Justice Committee for a Pride History Presentation following Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, May 28. A light lunch will be provided. \nThis presentation will be led by Jason Van Ness and will examine the LGBTQIA+ equal rights movement and Pride events over the past 50 years. The presentation will highlight key social and political events that have dovetailed with Pride events in the past\, and considerations for organizing efforts moving forward. Following the presentation\, there will be a panel discussion with LGBTQIA+ clergy in the Greater Pittsburgh region\, who will discuss the future of Christianity and the LGBTQIA+ community. \nOur congregation is a proud participant in LAMP (LGBTQIA+ Affirming Ministries of Pittsburgh)\, along with other affirming Presbyterian Churches in Pittsburgh. We are excited to again celebrate Pride in Pittsburgh. While there are many Pride events sponsored by different groups and in different neighborhoods\, the two Pride events LAMP will be participating in this year are: \n\nPittsburgh Pride March and Parade\, coordinated by QBurgh on behalf of Trans YOUniting and the Pittsburgh Pride Group on Saturday\, June 3\, in downtown and the North Shore.\nWe also will participate in People’s Pride PGH March and Festival on Sunday\, June 25\, in Swissvale.\n\nKeep a lookout for more details that will be posted near the Highland entrance monitor\, including parade maps and times. Come out and celebrate while we share God’s love with all of God’s people!
