SUMMARY:Karl Sellner Memorial Benefit 2022
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for what is sure to be a great evening of music\, food\, raffles\, games\, and friendship in remembrance of former Hope Academy student\, Karl Sellner. All proceeds from the event will go to a scholarship at Hope Academy. \nThis fund honors his memory and ensures that his love of music will live on through the beautiful voices\, playing of various instruments\, dance and acting of children for many years to come. \nIf you are unable to make it to the event\, but would like to make a donation to Hope Academy’s Scholarship Fund (select the Karl Sellner Memorial option) or donate an item for the auction\, click the button below. \nClick Here  \n\nABOUT KARL SELLNER \nFrom an early age\, Karl Jacob Sellner was simply captivated by his grandfather John Alden’s music\, foreshadowing his life-long love of the performing arts. This passion was nurtured by his family and by his many experiences as a student of Hope Academy. As a teen and young adult\, Karl became an accomplished guitar player and lyricist. As with his love of music\, Karl found the other things he cared about early in life\, including his wife Shelby\, and his calling to join the US Army to serve\, like his grandfather had during WWII. Like so many gifted musicians before him\, Karl’s light was also shadowed by bi-polar disorder. On\, September 11\, 2016\, Karl’s pain was too much and he ended his life. The support of the Hope Academy community was treasured by his parents and 6 siblings during this time of grief\, and together\, they channeled this sadness into the Karl Jacob Sellner Memorial Fund for Hope Academy. This fund honors his memory and ensures that his love of music will live on through the beautiful voices\, playing of various instruments\, dance and acting of children for many years to come. \nABOUT HOPE ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND THE ARTS \nHope Academy of Music and the Arts\, an outreach program of East Liberty Presbyterian Church\, offers a safe place where young people of diverse racial\, ethnic\, cultural\, socioeconomic\, religious and linguistic backgrounds can further their personal and artistic growth through the study and performance of theater\, dance and music. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive artistic community that provides deep arts instruction through a sequential and progressive program; that supports the personal and artistic growth of students and teaching artists\, alike; and contributes to our community’s positive growth and cultural vibrancy. Over 350 young people and their families participate in Hope Academy’s programs throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Pittsburgh - Sphinx Virtuosi
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a live\, in-person chamber music concert featuring SPHINX VIRTUOSI on MON Oct 11\, 2021 at Carnegie Music Hall. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This live performance is recommended for vaccinated students and their families Please read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations. Then let your teaching artist know how many people in your family would like to attend so that we can reserve tickets for you. There will also be a virtual watch party of the concert on Monday\, October 18; we will email our music students details about the watch party next week. \n\nThe Sphinx Virtuosi are the nation’s most dynamic\, exhilarating professional chamber orchestra\, dedicated to increasing racial and ethnic diversity in classical music. Comprised of eighteen of the nation’s top Black and Latinx classical soloists\, the Virtuosi are primarily alumni of the internationally renowned Sphinx Competition\, and its members work together as cultural ambassadors reaching new audiences. \n\nPROGRAM\nXavier Foley Ev’ry Voice\nFlorence Price String Quartet No. 2 in A minor\nII. Andante Cantabile ARRANGED FOR SPHINX VIRTUOSI\nSamuel Coleridge Taylor Four Noveletten\n1. Allegro moderato / 3. Andante con moto\nJessie Montgomery Banner!\nAndrea Casarrubios Seven (for solo cello)\nRicardo Herz\nInocente\nMourinho\nGinastera Concerto for Strings\nIV. Finale furioso \n \nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER \nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. Since music is mostly a listening activity\, any extra sounds that are not part of the music can get in the way and will distract and disturb the musicians and other audience members. \nBefore the Concert \nWear something you might wear to a special event – because it is!.\nPlease don’t wear anything that might be distracting (light up shoes\, clanging jewelry\, etc)\nArrive no later than 7:00 pm to get your tickets. \nBefore You Take Your Seat \nTake care of all rest room needs\nLeave all food\, drink\, and gum outside\, in the lobby.\nLeave all cameras and recording devices outside\, as well.\nThere are strict copyright guidelines about recording concerts.Turn off all cell phones\, pagers\, ipads\, watch sounds\, alarms\, or anything that might make a noise.\nThe only sounds that should be heard are the ones that appear in the musical score (and the audience reaction after the music). \nOnce You Take Your Seat \nA parent or guardian must sit next to each child.\nRemain seated and quiet while the musicians are playing.\nDo not get up during the concert or change seats.\nNo talking\, whispering\, sighing\, tapping or kicking feet\, or rattling of programs or papers.\nBe sure to sit without fidgeting so you don’t distract your neighbors or the performers on stage.\nFeel free to leave during intermission\, if this is a late night for your children; and if they fall asleep during the concert\, that’s okay too. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!

SUMMARY:Hope Academy Student Performing in PPT's Black Ballerina
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy student\, Zora Rose\, will be performing in Pittsburgh Public Theater’s virtual production of Black Ballerina as part of their Classics N’at series. \nTickets are as little as $10 and your whole family can watch together\, at home from May 20-May 23. \nFor tickets: https://donate2.app/RPeWh2 \nFor information about how to stream the play: https://ppt.org/ppt_home/pages/19870-playtime \nAbout Black Ballerina from Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Website \nWritten by Stephen Fedo & Tim Rhoze\nDirected by Tim Rhoze \nMay 20-23\, 2021 \nTim Rhoze (Director of Public PlayTime’s Fires in the Mirror) returns to Pittsburgh Public Theater to direct this elegant story about the perseverance and principle it takes to thrive in the elite world of dance. Gliding through time\, the story portrays the struggle of three generations of incredibly skilled Black dancers struggling to keep their dreams on point in the face of discrimination. Equal parts grit and poetry\, Black Ballerina draws from the classic canon and iconic ballets to place the narrative of these stunning dancers at the center of the story. \nStarring Sean Blake\, Allison Cahill\, Jen Gorman\, Amy Landis\, Mike Magliocca\, Zora Rose\, Kara Roseborough\, Claire Sabatine\, Eldridge Shannon\, and Jacqueline Williams. \nContent: This story explores themes of generational racial trauma and includes adult situations and explicit language. While these are important topics to consider and discuss\, please note this content may not be appropriate for all viewers.

SUMMARY:Karl Sellner Memorial Benefit 2019
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for what is sure to be a great evening of music\, food\, raffles\, games\, and friendship in remembrance of former Hope Academy student\, Karl Sellner. All proceeds from the event will go to a scholarship at Hope Academy. \nThis fund honors his memory and ensures that his love of music will live on through the beautiful voices\, playing of various instruments\, dance and acting of children for many years to come. \nIf you are unable to make it to the event but would still to make a donation to the scholarship fund\, here is the link to the Hope Academy donations page. \nClick HERE to make a DONATION to Hope Academy’s Scholarship Fund (select the Karl Sellner Memorial option) or Donate an Item for the AUCTION \n\nABOUT KARL SELLNER \nFrom an early age\, Karl Jacob Sellner was simply captivated by his grandfather John Alden’s music\, foreshadowing his life-long love of the performing arts.

DESCRIPTION:The following studios will have recitals on Sunday\, March 17: \n\n\n\n1:30 pm: Kathleen Andrews and Jennifer O’Konski (Suzuki Violin)\, Ana Diaz (cello)\n\n\n\n\n3:30 pm: Patricia Pavlack and the Suzuki Association of Pittsburgh\n\n\n\nRecitals are special occasions designed to give students a chance to share their music and gain valuable performance experience. They provide a benchmark to measure growth from year to year\, and an incentive for students to practice and polish pieces they are working on. \nThere will be many recital sessions scheduled throughout the day in various rooms throughout the church building. Please do not ask to have your child perform at the beginning or the end of their recital session – students and families are expected to be on time and stay for the entire recital that their children are performing in. We are organizing the recital sessions to be about an hour long. \nCOOKIE RECEPTION \nEach family is asked to bring cookies for a reception that will follow the recital. There will be two reception rooms in the front hallway\, leading to the Sanctuary. Rooms will be labeled so that cookies can be placed in the room that corresponds to the student’s studio. Please bring cookies only. It is best if they are on a disposable tray. \nRECITAL ETIQUETTE \nLearning about and practicing recital etiquette is an important part of a student’s musical education\, so we ask that families read and discuss these guidelines with their children. \nPerformer Etiquette \n\nDress appropriately. Choose conservative over casual in terms of shoe styles\, hem length of dresses and straps for tops.\nAvoid jewelry that makes noise as you move; heels that are difficult to walk in; and sleeves that get in the way of playing.\nBe on time. Your teacher will let you know when and where to meet before the recital to warm up. This will be at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the recital. If you are playing with an accompanist\, you may be asked to arrive earlier to rehearse together.\nBe prepared. Make sure you have your music\, instrument and any necessary accessories before leaving home (bow\, rosin\, capo\, tuner\, etc.)\nBe respectful. Refrain from whispering\, talking\, or using electronic devices. Show the other performers the same courtesy you want to be shown.\nEnter and exit with confidence. You should bow at the end and acknowledge the accompanist (if you have one). Teachers will go over this in lessons.\n\nAudience Etiquette \n\nArrive on time or a little early. Late arrivals are distracting to the audience\, and they can be unnerving for the performer.\nTurn off cell phones and other electronic devices. Ring tones and electronic chirps are distracting; and texting\, reading emails and playing games while students are performing is disrespectful.\nDo not cause distractions. Bring something (a quiet game or book) to keep young children under 8 years old occupied. Children over 8 should be able to sit quietly and watch.\nTake disruptive infants or toddlers out of the recital as soon as they become fussy. Please sit close to an aisle so that you can leave without too much commotion. We will come to get you when your child performs.\nDo not talk\, whisper\, rattle papers or eat during the recital.\nStay for the entire performance to show respect for all of the musicians.\n\nPhotos and Video \n\nNo flash photography\, please\nA group photo\, with the teacher\, will be taken at the end of each recital session.
