DESCRIPTION:HAT Co (Hope Academy’s Teen Theater Company) singers and band will open and perform for the 18th Annual Summit Against Racism. \nJoin us for the 18th Summit Against Racism\, at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary hosted this year by the Metro-Urban Institute and the Black and White Reunion. The conference will provide a forum for discussion about the current state of race relations in the U.S.\, what we have learned so far\, and pathways to deeper understanding\, healing and social action. \nThere is a wide range of workshops\, panel discussions and conversations that take place in three blocks throughout the day. \nOnline registration is open until Wednesday\, January 20. You can also register at the door\, the day of the event. \nYou will need to be there early to see Hope Academy students perform beginning at 8:20 am.

SUMMARY:Hope Academy Recitals at Phipps Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s music students will perform recital pieces at the Phipps during their winter flower show. Performers will receive complimentary tickets to the Phipps; parents\, guardians and guests will need to purchase tickets. \nAdmission is $15 for adults\, $14 for seniors and students\, and $11 for children (ages 2 – 18). Members and kids under 2 enter free. A visit to the Phipps is always a lovely family-outing for the holidays\, so please plan to join us there. \nBringing the familiar carol “Deck the Halls” to life\, each of the changing exhibit rooms will embody the spirit of the holiday tune\, complete with artful arrangements of LED lights\, decorated fir trees\, whimsical props\, and\, of course\, plenty of seasonal favorites such as colorful poinsettias\, aromatic paperwhites and showy amaryllis. \nAdding to the festive atmosphere\, in our Outdoor and Discovery Gardens\, the Winter Light Garden will sparkle with luminous orbs\, trees and fountains of light. Garden Railroad will be on view too\, taking you on a magical trip through the plots of nine fairy tales and fables brought to life with interactive buttons for children to push\, and miniature living plants\, shrubs and trees.

SUMMARY:HAT Co Field Trip - Sunset Baby @ City Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in themes of family\, pride\, and hope\, Sunset Baby\, by Dominique Morisseau\, follows Nina\, a young black woman living in modern-day urban America\, as she grapples with the return of her newly-released from prison father Kenyatta\, a Black Liberation leader; the death of her mother from drugs; and the pressure of her hustling boyfriend Damon. Throughout the play\, we see Nina wrestle between her hard-knock\, inner-city present and her dreams of a better future while hip-hop rhythms and the music of Nina Simone provide the soundtrack to her life. A play that asks how do we move forward while honoring and accepting our past\, Sunset Baby marks the Pittsburgh debut of Dominique Morisseau\, one of the American theater’s most dynamic new voices. \nThanks to Kristin Link\, City Theatre’s Director of Education and Accessibility\, we will have an opportunity to meet with the cast after the show. \nPlease note: this play has mature themes and language and is suitable for older or more mature teens. \n

SUMMARY:HAT Co Field Trip and Performance - Bob Moses Lecture at CMU
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s teen theater company (HAT Co) will be attending a lecture by Bob Moses and performing the song “Up to the Mountain.” This event is free and open to the public. \nAn Evening with Bob Moses\, Civil Rights Legend and Education Activist\nin Collaboration with “SocialChange101.org\,” organizer\, Nico Slate\, Associate Professor of History \nA central figure in SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee)\, Moses spent years fighting racial inequality in Mississippi. In the early 1980s\, he founded the Algebra Project\, a nonprofit organization that uses uses mathematics as an organizing tool to ensure quality public school education for every child in America. \nAbout the Speaker\, Dr. Robert P. Moses\, President and Founder of The Algebra Project\, Inc.\n \nDr. Moses received his BA from Hamilton College (1956)\, and his MA in Philosophy from Harvard University (1957). Moses was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement as a field secretary for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1961\, Moses initiated SNCC’s Mississippi Voter Registration Project\, and was appointed its director in 1962. He helped to lead the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) into the Mississippi Summer Project (1964 Freedom Summer)\, which parachuted the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) to the National Democratic Convention in Atlantic City. He received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1982-87)\, and subsequently started the Algebra Project\, which uses mathematics as an organizing tool for a Quality Education as a Constitutional Right (QECR) for all students. With support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) since 2002\, the AP has been working with cohorts of high school students who previously performed in the lowest quartile on standardized exams. This work has led AP to propose a math high school “benchmark” for bottom quartile students: that they graduate high school on time\, in four years\, ready to do college math for college credit.  To this end\, the Algebra Project is exploring collaborations around a concept of “Math Cohort High Schools.”  Moses is co-author of Radical Equations—Civil Rights from Mississippi to the Algebra Project (Beacon\, 2001) and co-editor of Quality Education as a Constitutional Right-creating a grassroots movement to transform public schools (Beacon Press\, 2010). In 2011-2012\, Moses was the Distinguished Visitor for the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University\, and has been a visiting lecturer at NYU School of Law during the fall semesters\, 2012\, 2013\, and 2014. DESCRIPTION:“memory 4” FRESH WORKS PREVIEW \nAnna Thompson and Taylor Knight\, the Pittsburgh duo known as slowdanger\, forge collaborative performances that merge sound and image\, body and spirit. Throughout the fall\, the team is in residence at KST’s Alloy Studios to develop memory 4\, an exploration of the way memories are relived and redefined in each passing moment\, in a process of steady decay. Scheduled to premiere next summer\, memory 4 is the latest in a series of sense-soaked movement-fueled performances\, including memory 3: swimmoon—seen at KST last spring. \nThis in-progress performance is part of a KST Fresh Works Residency\, which provides artists with space\, resources and support to explore new ideas and launch new projects. \nThis is a “pay what makes you happy!” performance. DESCRIPTION:Meet the music teachers at Hope Academy of Music and the Arts to find out more about private voice and instrument lessons for your child. You may also register and schedule your lessons. \nChildren love music and movement; it’s natural – almost instinctual – for them to sing\, clap\, make rhythms\, and move. But how early should they get started in more formal classes and lessons? What instrument should they play? How do you know if they are ready? How long of a lesson should they take and often should they practice? Please come\, with your child\, to try on shoes and find appropriate leotards and tights. We will be accepting cash donations (pay what you can) that will be used to purchase additional shoes and clothing. \nAdditionally\, if you have any dance clothes or shoes that your child has outgrown\, please bring them to contribute so that another child can put them to good use. \n

SUMMARY:HAT Co Auditions
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for strong and committed singers\, dancers\, actors and musicians who will fearlessly throw themselves into creating artistic work together. \nABOUT HAT Co \nThis audition-only company provides a more intensive\, ensemble- and performance-based experience for teenagers who are interested in the performing arts. HAT Co members are encouraged to make their own work\, as they learn to think about and respect dance\, theater and music as art forms — and themselves as artists and creators. \nThis program is uniquely suited for teens who are motivated to study and perform across a range of disciplines; and who have an interest in being part of an inclusive\, supportive\, non-competitive group. \nEnsemble members receive private\, class and ensemble training in acting\, singing\, dance and instrumental music (keyboard\, drum set\, guitar\, bass\, violin\, and any other instrument that can be incorporated into the rock band). Classes and ensembles meet all day on Saturday and Thursdays after school; private lessons take place after school\, during the week. Students are required to make a yearlong commitment (September to mid-June) and to sign a contract indicating their ability and willingness to attend all scheduled classes\, private lessons\, rehearsals and performances. \nAUDITION ON SATURDAY\, SEPT 5\n \n\nComplete an online application form (HAT Co Application 2015-2016)\nPlease arrive promptly at 9:00 am and be prepared to stay the entire time\nPrepare a 1 minute monologue or poem (memorized);\nBe ready to sing a song of your choice\, A cappella (unaccompanied)\, or accompany yourself on your instrument;\nWear loose\, comfortable clothing to take a movement class;\nBring your instrument\, and play a song of your choice\, if you are auditioning for HAT Co band\n\nApplicants who are accepted into HAT Co will be required to have a parent or guardian attend an orientation session on SAT SEPT 12 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm)

DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s teen theater company (HAT Co) rocks it out to original songs and popular covers with a five-piece band and five singers.
