DESCRIPTION:As one of the premier spoken word artists of today\, Ursula Rucker has collaborated with award-winning artists and producers including King Britt\, 4 Hero\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Josh Wink\, and—most notably—The Roots\, with whom she crafted The Unlocking\, Alice in Wonderland and Return To Innocence Lost. She has also performed alongside Gil Scott-Heron\, Mos Def\, Macy Gray and opened for the late Nina Simone. \n“Ursula Rucker is my personal savior.” \n— Questlove \nIn My Father’s Daughter\, Ursula Rucker juxtaposes her mother’s life with her own. Raw and soulful\, Rucker’s concisely wrought text blends with projected video imagery\, offering a reflection of the women’s intertwined lives and illuminating a personal story of survival. “It’s a live epic poem/live memoir\,” says Rucker—one that features live accompaniment by guitarist Tim Motzer. My Father’s Daughter charts Rucker’s life journey and the struggles that have shaped her into the woman she is today. \nWe will meet at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater at 7:45 pm. \nAs part of KST Presents\, tickets are Pay What Makes You Happy! \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:HAT Co Field Trip and Performance - Bob Moses Lecture at CMU
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s teen theater company (HAT Co) will be attending a lecture by Bob Moses and performing the song “Up to the Mountain.” This event is free and open to the public. \nAn Evening with Bob Moses\, Civil Rights Legend and Education Activist\nin Collaboration with “SocialChange101.org\,” organizer\, Nico Slate\, Associate Professor of History \nA central figure in SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee)\, Moses spent years fighting racial inequality in Mississippi. In the early 1980s\, he founded the Algebra Project\, a nonprofit organization that uses uses mathematics as an organizing tool to ensure quality public school education for every child in America. \nAbout the Speaker\, Dr. Robert P. Moses\, President and Founder of The Algebra Project\, Inc.\n \nDr. Moses received his BA from Hamilton College (1956)\, and his MA in Philosophy from Harvard University (1957). Moses was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement as a field secretary for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1961\, Moses initiated SNCC’s Mississippi Voter Registration Project\, and was appointed its director in 1962. He helped to lead the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) into the Mississippi Summer Project (1964 Freedom Summer)\, which parachuted the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) to the National Democratic Convention in Atlantic City. He received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1982-87)\, and subsequently started the Algebra Project\, which uses mathematics as an organizing tool for a Quality Education as a Constitutional Right (QECR) for all students. With support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) since 2002\, the AP has been working with cohorts of high school students who previously performed in the lowest quartile on standardized exams. This work has led AP to propose a math high school “benchmark” for bottom quartile students: that they graduate high school on time\, in four years\, ready to do college math for college credit.  To this end\, the Algebra Project is exploring collaborations around a concept of “Math Cohort High Schools.”  Moses is co-author of Radical Equations—Civil Rights from Mississippi to the Algebra Project (Beacon\, 2001) and co-editor of Quality Education as a Constitutional Right-creating a grassroots movement to transform public schools (Beacon Press\, 2010). In 2011-2012\, Moses was the Distinguished Visitor for the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University\, and has been a visiting lecturer at NYU School of Law during the fall semesters\, 2012\, 2013\, and 2014. Dr. Moses is Founder and President of the Algebra Project\, Inc. \nSee more at: http://www.facebook.com/TheAlgebraProject and http://www.algebra.org

SUMMARY:Meet the Music Teaching Artists Open House
DESCRIPTION:Meet the music teachers at Hope Academy of Music and the Arts to find out more about private voice and instrument lessons for your child. You may also register and schedule your lessons. \nChildren love music and movement; it’s natural – almost instinctual – for them to sing\, clap\, make rhythms\, and move. But how early should they get started in more formal classes and lessons? What instrument should they play? How do you know if they are ready? How long of a lesson should they take and often should they practice? To help answer these questions\, teaching artists from Hope Academy of Music and the Arts will be available to meet your child and let them listen to and touch various instruments. Suzuki Violin teachers will be available to talk about this approach and to measure new students for violins. \nThe following teachers are confirmed for the Open House: \nLiza Barley – Suzuki Violin\, Violin\, Viola\, Cello\, Suzuki Piano\nLaura Reynolds Carmichael – Piano\nSarah Greenwald – Violin\, Viola\nLee Kikuchi – Piano\, Violin\, Cello\, Voice\nEmily Swora – Voice\, Music Discovery

SUMMARY:HAT Co Auditions
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for strong and committed singers\, dancers\, actors and musicians who will fearlessly throw themselves into creating artistic work together. \nABOUT HAT Co \nThis audition-only company provides a more intensive\, ensemble- and performance-based experience for teenagers who are interested in the performing arts. SUMMARY:"This Girl Laughs\, This Girl Cries\, This Girl Does Nothing" Performance #6
DESCRIPTION:“This Girl Laughs\, The Girl Cries\, This Girl Does Nothing” is Finegan Kruckmeyer’s award-winning\, fairytale-esque play about the journey of three sisters who take different paths\, have incredible adventures\, and end up back where they started\, transformed into independent women. This highly original tale explores complex themes of love\, loss and self-discovery. \nUsing an innovative DIY design aesthetic\, plus shadow puppets and an original soundscape and songs\, Hope Academy’s Teen Theater Company (HAT Co) brings this poetic\, humorous and action-packed story to life for young people and adults\, ages 8 and up. (The age restriction is due to the intimate theater setting as well as the content: death of a mother and children being abandoned by their parents). \n[vimeo id=”128407852″]\nThere will be six performances on Saturday\, May 23 and Sunday\, May 24 at 1 pm\, 4 pm and 7 pm. \nTickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and youth.

Five family members fled outside after being awoken at 4 am by the piercing sound of smoke alarms\, but three others – sisters\, Joyce and Judy Reese and a baby in their care – were trapped inside. Firefighters arrived within minutes of the 911 call and rescued Joyce and the 10-month-old boy from the porch roof; Judy was in cardiac arrest when firefighters found her on the second floor of their home. The family lost everything in the fire. \nThe Reese Family\nSisters Joyce and Melanee Reese\, with two sons of their own\, decided a little over 20 years ago to help kids in need after learning how few black families there were in the foster care system. On Oct. 27\, 1994\, 2-day-old Clarisa arrived and then\, a month and a half later\, 3-month-old Christopher. Soon after that came Christopher’s older sister\, Jessica\, who was 2 at the time; and then Clarisa’s younger brother\, Donald\, who was 3 months old. Joyce and Melanee adopted these children and then four years later\, 3-month-old Henderson arrived. When his little sister\, Taylor\, was born six years later\, they once again took the baby in\, to keep the siblings together. \nIn all\, the Reese sisters are raising six children from three sibling sets. Each of them came to the women with medical problems and special needs. “Somebody had to do it. They needed somebody to care\, and we had enough to give\,” Joyce explains. The sisters raised all the children the same way: Be polite\, do your schoolwork\, don’t be disruptive and be good citizens. “We tried to give the kids a very well-rounded life experience\,” Melanee said. All of the Reese children have participated in Hope Academy of Music and the Arts\, taking piano\, violin\, ballet and acting. They take part in ELPC’s Club 116\, and the Food for Thought mentoring program; and are also active in tennis\, swimming and other sports. \n\nTHANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY DONATED TO THE REESE FAMILY FIRE RECOVERY BINGO!\n This list will be updated as donations for Bingo prizes are confirmed.
