Five family members fled outside after being awoken at 4 am by the piercing sound of smoke alarms\, but three others – sisters\, Joyce and Judy Reese and a baby in their care – were trapped inside. Firefighters arrived within minutes of the 911 call and rescued Joyce and the 10-month-old boy from the porch roof; Judy was in cardiac arrest when firefighters found her on the second floor of their home. The family lost everything in the fire. \nThe Reese Family\nSisters Joyce and Melanee Reese\, with two sons of their own\, decided a little over 20 years ago to help kids in need after learning how few black families there were in the foster care system. On Oct. 27\, 1994\, 2-day-old Clarisa arrived and then\, a month and a half later\, 3-month-old Christopher. Soon after that came Christopher’s older sister\, Jessica\, who was 2 at the time; and then Clarisa’s younger brother\, Donald\, who was 3 months old. Joyce and Melanee adopted these children and then four years later\, 3-month-old Henderson arrived. When his little sister\, Taylor\, was born six years later\, they once again took the baby in\, to keep the siblings together. \nIn all\, the Reese sisters are raising six children from three sibling sets. Each of them came to the women with medical problems and special needs. “Somebody had to do it. They needed somebody to care\, and we had enough to give\,” Joyce explains. The sisters raised all the children the same way: Be polite\, do your schoolwork\, don’t be disruptive and be good citizens. “We tried to give the kids a very well-rounded life experience\,” Melanee said. All of the Reese children have participated in Hope Academy of Music and the Arts\, taking piano\, violin\, ballet and acting. They take part in ELPC’s Club 116\, and the Food for Thought mentoring program; and are also active in tennis\, swimming and other sports. \n\nTHANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY DONATED TO THE REESE FAMILY FIRE RECOVERY BINGO!\n This list will be updated as donations for Bingo prizes are confirmed. Please support these generous businesses\, artists and cultural organizations; and consider becoming a donor yourself. Click here for more information. SUMMARY:HAT Co Dance Ensemble Field Trip: Anthony Williams' Dress/Tech
DESCRIPTION:HAT Co’s core dancers have an opportunity to observe a dress/tech rehearsal for Anthony Williams’ performance of Loving Black. The rehearsal will take place a few blocks away at the Alloy Studios on Penn Avenue. We will go to the rehearsal instead of dance class that evening (Thursday\, Oct 16). Pick up will be at the Alloy Studios at 8 pm. Here is information about the performance. \nHope Academy teaching artist\, Anthony Williams\, presents Loving Black\, as part of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s Fresh Works series.  This new dance performance is about the complicated love between African American men. The project examines past and present representations of black male identities to inspire a dialogue about the diversity of expressions. \nLoving Black is a personal work created by Anthony Williams. It is about identity\, race and sexuality; and it does include content suitable for more mature audiences. This description should help parents/guardians decide if their teen should attend the rehearsal and/or performance: \nIn this work\, four men explore intimacy\, sensitivity\, and colorism as they move through the process of redefining their projected identities. The piece begins with historic references to the Willie Lynch letter as well as an excerpt from Malcolm X’s “You Can’t Hate The Roots of A Tree” speech.  Another excerpt\, from Mark Gonzales’ “As With Most Men\,” a spoken word piece about the fear of male intimacy\, uses the F-word. The dancers change costumes onstage\, so there is some partial\, but not genital\, nudity. Projected images are used throughout the piece to illustrate the derogatory way our culture describes and defines masculinity. \nLanguage – Mild to moderate use of profanity\nSexual Content – Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior\, possibly including partial nudity\nSexual Themes – References to sex or sexuality\nSuggestive Themes – Mild provocative references or materials\nViolent References – References to violent acts \nAbout Anthony Williams:\nAnthony Williams is a resident teaching artist at Kelly Strayhorn Theater who recently presented his work Identity at KST’s newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival 2013. He has performed with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre\, August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble\, Texture Contemporary Ballet\, and Ballet Chicago. SUMMARY:HAT Co Field Trip: Macbeth @ PICT
DESCRIPTION:HAT Co ensemble members are invited to see Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre’s “Macbeth” (the focus of our Shakespeare studies last year). Check out PICT’s website for short\, informative video clips by director\, Alan Stanford\, about the play. \n“Something wicked this way comes\,” says one witch as Macbeth approaches. As Macbeth’s ambition grows\, fueled by the prophecies of the three witches\, he and his Lady begin a campaign of devastation and death to secure the throne of Scotland. How far will they go to satisfy the blossoming wickedness in their hearts? Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy will leave you breathless. If you enjoy Game of Thrones\, Macbeth will thrill you. \nThe play runs 2 hrs\, with a 15 minute intermission. There is a talk-back discussion and Q&A session after that you should all stay for. \nThanks to Tickets for Kids and Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre for giving us this great opportunity to see “Macbeth.”

SUMMARY:Hope Academy Teen Theater Company (HAT Co) Auditions
DESCRIPTION:We are looking for strong and committed singers\, dancers\, actors and musicians who will fearlessly throw themselves into creating artistic work together. \nDownload HAT Co’s Calendar and Schedule for the year\, to make sure that you will be able to commit to all of the scheduled classes\, ensembles\, rehearsals and performances. Then complete this online HAT Co Application\, and we will\ncontact you with more info about the audition.\n \nABOUT HAT Co \nThis audition-only company provides a more intensive\, ensemble- and performance-based experience for students in grades 6 through 12 who are interested in the performing arts. HAT Co members are encouraged to make their own work\, as they learn to think about and respect dance\, theater and music as art forms — and themselves as artists and creators. \nThis program is uniquely suited for teens who are motivated to study and perform across a range of disciplines; and who have an interest in being part of an inclusive\, supportive\, non-competitive group. \nEnsemble members receive private\, class and ensemble training in acting\, singing\, dance and instrumental music (keyboard\, drum set\, guitar\, bass\, violin\, and any other instrument that can be incorporated into the rock band). Classes and ensembles meet all day on Saturday and Thursdays after school; private lessons take place after school\, during the week. Students are required to make a yearlong commitment (September to mid-June) and to sign a contract indicating their ability and willingness to attend all scheduled classes\, private lessons\, rehearsals and performances. \nMusicians who are proficient in one or more instruments\, may audition for HAT Co (and also participate in the singing\, dance and acting components) or opt to only participate in HAT Co Rock Band. Middle school students (6th and 7th grade) will be placed in HAT Co Jr. \nWe will email complete audition information to everyone who completes the online HAT Co Application\, but here are the basic requirements.\n \n\nPlease arrive promptly at 12 noon\nMake sure you have completed the online application (download HAT Co Application 2014-2015)\nPrepare a 1 minute monologue or poem (memorized is best\, although you could do a reading if necessary);\nBe ready to sing a song of your choice\, A cappella (unaccompanied)\, or accompany yourself on your instrument;\nWear loose\, comfortable clothing to take a movement class;\nBring your instrument\, and play a song of your choice\, if you are auditioning for HAT Co band\n\nApplicants who are accepted into HAT Co will be required to have a parent or guardian attend an orientation session.
