SUMMARY:HAT Co Dance Ensemble Field Trip: Anthony Williams' Dress/Tech
DESCRIPTION:HAT Co’s core dancers have an opportunity to observe a dress/tech rehearsal for Anthony Williams’ performance of Loving Black. The rehearsal will take place a few blocks away at the Alloy Studios on Penn Avenue. We will go to the rehearsal instead of dance class that evening (Thursday\, Oct 16). Pick up will be at the Alloy Studios at 8 pm. Here is information about the performance. \nHope Academy teaching artist\, Anthony Williams\, presents Loving Black\, as part of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s Fresh Works series.  This new dance performance is about the complicated love between African American men. The project examines past and present representations of black male identities to inspire a dialogue about the diversity of expressions. \nLoving Black is a personal work created by Anthony Williams. It is about identity\, race and sexuality; and it does include content suitable for more mature audiences. This description should help parents/guardians decide if their teen should attend the rehearsal and/or performance: \nIn this work\, four men explore intimacy\, sensitivity\, and colorism as they move through the process of redefining their projected identities. The piece begins with historic references to the Willie Lynch letter as well as an excerpt from Malcolm X’s “You Can’t Hate The Roots of A Tree” speech.  Another excerpt\, from Mark Gonzales’ “As With Most Men\,” a spoken word piece about the fear of male intimacy\, uses the F-word. The dancers change costumes onstage\, so there is some partial\, but not genital\, nudity. Projected images are used throughout the piece to illustrate the derogatory way our culture describes and defines masculinity. \nLanguage – Mild to moderate use of profanity\nSexual Content – Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior\, possibly including partial nudity\nSexual Themes – References to sex or sexuality\nSuggestive Themes – Mild provocative references or materials\nViolent References – References to violent acts \nAbout Anthony Williams:\nAnthony Williams is a resident teaching artist at Kelly Strayhorn Theater who recently presented his work Identity at KST’s newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival 2013. He has performed with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre\, August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble\, Texture Contemporary Ballet\, and Ballet Chicago. SUMMARY:HAT Co Field Trip: Macbeth @ PICT
DESCRIPTION:HAT Co ensemble members are invited to see Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre’s “Macbeth” (the focus of our Shakespeare studies last year). Check out PICT’s website for short\, informative video clips by director\, Alan Stanford\, about the play. \n“Something wicked this way comes\,” says one witch as Macbeth approaches. As Macbeth’s ambition grows\, fueled by the prophecies of the three witches\, he and his Lady begin a campaign of devastation and death to secure the throne of Scotland. How far will they go to satisfy the blossoming wickedness in their hearts? Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy will leave you breathless. If you enjoy Game of Thrones\, Macbeth will thrill you. \nThe play runs 2 hrs\, with a 15 minute intermission. There is a talk-back discussion and Q&A session after that you should all stay for. \nThanks to Tickets for Kids and Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre for giving us this great opportunity to see “Macbeth.”

SUMMARY:On the Edge of Night: NO BOUNDaries Project World Premier

SUMMARY:HAT Co @ WYEP Summer Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s teen theater company band\, HAT Co\, is performing on SAT June 28 at 2 pm as part of WYEP’s 2014 Summer Music Festival. The afternoon will feature HAT Co\, plus three other local teen bands –  winners of WYEP’s Reimagination Contest. Bring your blanket and join us at Schenley Plaza (the park in front of the Carnegie Library in Oakland). HAT Co is first up at 2 pm and will feature Anna Lowe\, Sam Gardner\, Candace Burgess\, Mimi Thomas\, Zoe Zielinski\, Lawrence White and Michael Chapman. \nBesides the opportunity to perform\, each band selected for WYEP’s Reimagine project received the opportunity to record one song at The Church Recording Studio. HAT Co was matched with producer\, Jake Hanner\, from the band Donora to record Zoe Zielinski’s original song\, “Gold Chains\, Diamonds.” The song is included on a WYEP Reimagination Compilation CD. \nWYEP’s blog says: \nEach of bands could not sound more different\, but their songs on the CD exhibit a high level of professionalism\, energy\, and musical talent. \nHat Co’s song featuring Zoe Z.\, “Gold Chains\,” has an R&B / Soul flavor. Zoe sings with a mature confidence\, emotion\, and power\, which is usually difficult for young musicians to convey through a recording\, but Zoe does it successfully. \nWYEP’s Summer Music Festival evening performances (starting at 6 pm) include The Red Western\, Elizabeth & The Catapult\, Valerie June and The Sam Roberts Band. \nCONNECT AND SHARE \n#HATCoWYEP is the hashtag for this event. To share your experience\, use #HATCoWYEP on Twitter\, Instagram and other social media sites. Follow us on Instagram (hopeacademyarts); Twitter (@HopeAcademyArts); and facebook (facebook.com/HopeAcademy). HAT Co has a new bandcamp page: http://hatco.bandcamp.com.\n \nCheck us out! \n \n

SUMMARY:Getting Started in Music and Dance: An Open House for Families with Young Children
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a young child who loves music and/or dance\, but you’re not sure how to help them get started? Join us for an afternoon session of demonstrations\, presentations and hand-on activities designed to answer your questions and give you the information you need to get your child ready to begin learning how to sing\, dance\, or play an instrument. \n1:00 to 2:30 pm – Music Program at Hope Academy\nChildren love music and movement; it’s natural – almost instinctual – for them to sing\, clap\, make rhythms\, and move. But how early should they get started in more formal classes and lessons? What instrument should they play? How do you know if they are ready? How long of a lesson should they take and often should they practice? To help answer these questions\, teaching artists\, from Hope Academy of Music and the Arts\, will give presentations on piano\, strings (violin\, viola\, cello)\, flute\, guitar\, drums/percussion and voice. Children will be able to listen to and touch various instruments. Families will be invited to observe a Suzuki violin class in action and learn more about our new Suzuki piano program. Scholarship applications (for Fall 2014) will be accepted and appointments for interviews will be scheduled. \n2:30 to 3:30 pm – Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Dance Program @ Hope Academy\nAn early introduction to dance can foster a lifelong interest in\, if not a love for\, movement\, music\, rhythm and dance. However\, it’s important that the introduction be fun and stimulating; and that it engage the child’s body\, mind and imagination. There are many different methods and approaches to dance training for young children. To find out about Hope Academy’s\, join us for an “open class” for 6- to 8-year-old dancers; and meet Alyssa Herzog Melby\, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Director of Education and Community Engagement. \nAll events are free\, but space is limited and families must RSVP online at www.brownpapertickets.com (click on the link below) or by calling 412-441-3800 x11.
