DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Team of the Justice Committee has selected Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler as its next book. You’re invited to read it and join us for a discussion on Thursday\, August 25\, 7 pm\, led Nancy Heastings and Penn Hackney online via Zoom. For more details\, please contact Nancy Heastings. \nPublished in 1993\, this climate sci-fi is set in 2024 California. The story’s lead character is a 15-year-old Black girl whose father is a preacher. Global climate change and economic crises have led to social chaos. Global warming has brought drought and rising seawater. The middle class and working poor live in gated neighborhoods\, where they fend off the homeless with guns and walls. Fresh water is scarce and is as valuable as money. Fires are common. Public schools are being privatized\, as are whole towns. In this atmosphere\, a Presidential candidate named Christopher Donner is elected based on his promises to dismantle government programs and bring back jobs. \nThe book has had a resurgence and second-read reviewers comment\, “But for sheer peculiar prescience\, Butler’s novel and its sequel (Parable of the Talents) may be unmatched.” \nFor some writers\, science fiction serves as means to delve into fantasy. But for Butler\, it largely served as a vehicle to address issues facing humanity. It was this passionate interest in the human experience that imbued her work with a certain depth and complexity. Her books blended elements of science fiction and African American spiritualism.

Dr. Portlock has been associate director of Science and Research at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History\, and—among many other current positions—is an advisory board member of the Black Environmental Collective. DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently proposing to tighten regulations on soot—a mix of metals\, organic chemicals\, and acidic substances in particles that are so small\, they can be inhaled deeply into our lungs and enter our bloodstreams. Emitted by power plants and the tailpipes of cars and trucks\, soot’s health burden falls most heavily on communities of color and the poor. Children; the elderly; and people with asthma\, other respiratory\, and heart conditions are particularly vulnerable. \nEnacting the strongest limit could save 19\,000 lives a year! We need to tell the EPA to develop the strongest possible soot standard to ensure clean air. Interfaith Power and Light\, a faith-based environmental group\, has a letter on soot that you can send to the EPA at tiny.cc/epa-letter. \nThe Environmental Team of the Justice Committee invites you to act to protect our climate and our health\, and advance environmental justice. DESCRIPTION:The Justice Committee will host a screening of the documentary\, My Name is Pauli Murray\, following worship on Sunday\, August 13\, in the Social Hall. A light lunch will be provided. \nPauli Murray was a writer\, activist\, legal theorist\, and episcopal priest\, and was involved in articulating key legal arguments of the Civil Rights Movement. Born Anne Pauline Murray in 1910\, they changed their birth name to “Pauli” in the 1930s\, a groundbreaking challenge at that time. In 1944\, Murray challenged the “separate” part of the Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896) Supreme Court decision as a violation of the 13th and 14th Amendments\, eventually forming the basis for Brown vs. The Board of Education (1954) case. Murray also was influential in the work of both Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Thurgood Marshall. In 1977\, Murray became the first African American woman in the U.S. to become an Episcopal priest. SUMMARY:OHM Family TeamWorks Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Open Hand Ministries (OHM) is one of our mission partners serving the neighborhoods near ELPC. We will be supplying food for their community dinner on Tuesday\, September 26. We are asking for volunteers to provide salads\, side dishes\, or desserts (to serve 6 to 8 people) for this dinner. \nLook for the sign-up tables at the entrances to the worship spaces\, or contact Bob Forloines for more info.
