SUMMARY:Book Discussion | Banished from Johnstown
DESCRIPTION:Author Cody McDevitt will be with us to discuss his book\, Banished from Johnstown: Racist Backlash in Pennsylvania. The book examines one of the worst civil rights injustices in the history of Pennsylvania\, which took place in 1923. Join us for two opportunities to engage with Cody: once during the adult Church School hour with the Seekers class\, and again following Sanctuary worship. \nBanished from Johnstown chronicles a virtually unknown\, tragic episode in African American and Johnstown history. Samuel W. Black\, director of the African American Program at the Senator John Heinz History Center states\, “Recalling the national debate about race and constitutional rights and the willingness to express dictatorial rule over Black lives by white elected officials was not just a scene in large urban areas\, but the small\, mid-American heartland as well. \nThis opportunity is sponsored by our Adult Church School classes and the Facing Systemic Racism Ministry Team. You are encouraged to read the book in preparation for the discussion. \nTo borrow a book or ask questions\, contact Pastor Patrice at PatriceFS@coh.net or Gwen Puza at gpuza9@gmail.com. \nClick the button below to join the session via Zoom\, or you may call in by dialing 301.715.8592. Enter meeting ID 876 5634 9138 and passcode 168623. \nNoon Session

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Visitor's Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Join us and invite your family\, friends\, and neighbors for worship as we celebrate Visitor’s Sunday. Following worship\, everyone is welcome to attend our Church Life Sampler in the Social Hall. \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

SUMMARY:Hannah Price Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:ELPC is proud to host a month-long photo exhibition by noted photographer Hannah Price. Her works will be on display in the Second Floor Parlor daily from 9 am–7 pm\, until Fri.\, June 23. \nHer series\, Cursed by Night\, focuses on the world of darkness in which African American males are unfortunately restricted and too often cursed. Darkness can distort faces\, causing people to be seen as threats or making them invisible. Come view these works and see how they challenge the power of night. \nBorn in 1986\, Price is internationally known for her project City of Brotherly Love (2009–2012)\, a series of photographs of the men who catcalled her on the streets of Philadelphia. In 2014\, Price graduated from the Yale School of Art MFA Photography program. Over the past six years\, Price’s photos have been displayed in several cities across the U.S.\, with a few residing in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
