DESCRIPTION:Pentecost is the annual event in which we celebrate the birth of the early Christian church by remembering how the Holy Spirit inspired the first disciples. We wear red as a symbol of the fire that touched women and men that day and re-commit ourselves to sharing the good news of Christ. \nThis year\, Pentecost Sunday\, May 20\, is extra-special\, because we will confirm a group of young people and celebrate the final stage of our year-long building renovation project. The bulk of the work is finally done! While final tests and touch-ups are completed\, we will celebrate the excellent renovations and improvements through special words\, music\, and events. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Taizé service on All Saints’ Day as we remember all of the people in our lives who are no longer with us. \nOur All Saints’ Procession will begin and end in the Chapel\, but will include moving through the Narthex and Sanctuary before gathering in the Trinity Chapel to sing and pray by candlelight. Don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of this moving service of remembrance and hope. \n\nELPC offers evening prayers with chants from Taizé every Wednesday at 7 pm\, in the Chapel. The hour-long service includes sung prayers\, beautiful music\, a time of silence\, spoken and silent prayers\, and opportunities for individual prayer and anointing. DESCRIPTION:The three major world religions—Judaism\, Christianity\, and Islam—all share a common foundation in the life of the patriarch Abraham. God’s covenant with Abraham and his wife Sarah included the promise that their children will prosper and become the 12 tribes of ancient Israel. God’s promise of protection was given to Abraham’s servant Hagar\, who bore a son\, Ishmael\, to whom the Islamic faith traces its roots back to Abraham. And Christianity saw in the promises given to Abraham and Sarah a precursor to the covenant of grace and life made known in the incarnate Son of God\, Jesus Christ. \nPastor Randy will be joined by Rabbi Jamie Gibson (Temple Sinai) and Imam Mufti Abdul Wajid (Islamic Center of Pittsburgh) to explore our common faith heritage grounded in Abraham’s story. SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:Every day—but most especially on this World Communion Sunday—we strive to live as a community of mutuality\, concern\, equality\, and love. On this day\, we will welcome the Rev. Paul Roberts\, president of the Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary\, Atlanta\, as our guest. Rev. Roberts will lead a combined adult Church School class at 9:45 am\, and preach at our Sanctuary worship service at 11 am. We also will receive the Peace and Global Witness Offering\, which supports a range of PC(USA) ministries devoted to peacemaking and reconciliation. \nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. SUMMARY:Journey Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Journey Prayer is a time of gathering and mutual intercessory prayer during the summer months. Our time together will be held in the Social Hall and will include singing\, reading of scripture\, and shared prayer time\, concluding in time for our Summer Worship service at 10 am. This prayer service will be alternately led by Pastors Randy\, Patrice\, and Mary Lynn. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
