SUMMARY:Thomas Merton Book Study
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Merton was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk\, he was a poet\, social activist\, and pioneer of Interfaith Dialogue. Merton wrote more than 70 books\, mostly on spirituality\, social justice and a quiet pacifism\, as well as scores of essays and reviews. He also left behind his voluminous journals. Among Merton’s most enduring works is his bestselling autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain (1948)\, which appears on National Review’s list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th century. \nThroughout October\, we will be conducting an online Merton Book Study\, guided by Thomas Merton: Essential Writings (available on Amazon). \nJoin the conversation on Facebook by clicking here.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:This week\, we will celebrate Indigenous People’s Sunday. Following worship\, the ELPC Mission Board invites everyone to the Social Hall for a light lunch and a presentation\, titled Indigenous Pittsburgh: Christian Doctrine\, Small Pox Blankets\, and Native Populations. Click here to read more. \nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Indigenous Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:Nationalism Redefined: In this election year\, there has been a rise in so-called nationalism in our country—a call to return to the loyalty and devotion upon which the U.S. was established; a sense of consciousness that exalts the U.S. above all other countries and emphasizes the promotion of culture and superiority. However\, America was not discovered\, as the land was already inhabited when the Europeans arrived. A true return to nationalism would be a return to the indigenous people’s way of life\, culture\, and restoration of their land. \nIn recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day (this year on Monday\, October 10)\, the Mission Board will present Indigenous Pittsburgh: Christian Doctrine\, Small Pox Blankets\, and Native Populations. This presentation will provide a foundational framework for understanding U.S. policy and beliefs toward native populations and how they impacted our local history and treatment of natives. A light lunch will be served.

He earned the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at the Manhattan School of Music\, and the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. His teachers have included Claire Coci\, Peter Hurford\, Russell Saunders\, and Frederick Swann. In New York City\, he was Director of Music and Organist at Park Avenue Christian Church\, and later Associate Organist of the Riverside Church\, where he also conducted the Riverside Choral Society. SUMMARY:Educational Session on Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Homelessness and affordable housing are discussions that draw much attention and outrage in the East End\, as well as in the City of Pittsburgh as a whole—and rightfully so. We are called to care for the most vulnerable among us\, those who are without the necessities that so many of us have. \nPlease join the Mission Board and Mission Committees as we learn about homelessness in our community\, the new referral process for shelter assistance by Allegheny County\, and the national move to the “Housing First” model. \nOur guests will include Abigail Horn from the Allegheny County Department of Human Service.

SUMMARY:Writing as a Spiritual Practice
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Merton’s first—and one of his most famous—books is his spiritual autobiography\, The Seven Storey Mountain. Since his death\, many books have been published as compilations of\, or based upon\, the volumes of journals that he left behind. \nJoin us as ELPC member Dr. Brent House explores with us this practice of spiritual journaling and memoir writing as a way to draw nearer to ourselves and to God. \nA light lunch will be served. \nDr. House is a professor of Creative Writing at California University of Pennsylvania. \nAbout Thomas Merton\nThomas Merton was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk\, he was a poet\, social activist\, and pioneer of Interfaith Dialogue. Merton wrote more than 70 books—mostly on spirituality\, social justice\, and a quiet pacifism—as well as essays\, reviews\, and voluminous journals. Among Merton’s most enduring works is his best-selling\, spiritual autobiography\, The Seven Storey Mountain (1948)\, which appears on National Review’s list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th century. He has been an inspiration to millions.
