SUMMARY:Interfaith Panel on the Use of Sound in Faith
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian life—like that of virtually every other faith—is saturated with sound. Bells call us to worship\, we sing our praises to God\, and are moved by beautiful anthems to the accompaniment of organ\, piano\, and other instruments. We clap our appreciation\, utter aloud prayers and liturgy\, and\, of course\, we listen to sermons\, teachers\, and the words of others. \nAll of these sounds have an effect upon who we are\, as well as what and how we believe. Scientists study the actual physical effects of differing sound waves on matter\, and mystics have long acknowledged the impact of sound\, including the sound of silence on the open heart. \nJoin the Spiritual Life Committee in the Social Hall as we explore the science and spiritual dimensions of sound in our own tradition and that of other faiths.

SUMMARY:Faith\, Science\, and Our Spiritual Life
DESCRIPTION:What do the Universe and God have in common? If evolution is true\, does that leave room for God? If I believe in God does that mean I have to deny physics? Got questions? So do we! \nJoin us as we discuss the intersection between the science of our universe and our understanding of the Divine\, led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan. We read\, watch videos\, and try to make meaning of this precious moment which we share. You are welcome whether or not you have read\, studied\, or asked these questions before. Come join the conversation!

SUMMARY:Fellowship Time to Support DACA
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Justice Committee will hold a letter-writing\, petition-signing\, and tweeting advocacy campaign to support the DACA/DreamAct during Fellowship Time following worship on Sun.\, Jan. 28. Please join us in the Whitfield Lobby (ground floor) to find out how you can best lend your support. We will have the materials you need and some light snacks. \nThe DACA program was implemented in 2012 to provide an opportunity for some children who arrived in the U.S. illegally to stay in the country legally. The roughly 800\,000 participants in the program—commonly referred to as Dreamers—receive a range of benefits\, including the ability to acquire work permits\, eligibility for in-state tuition\, and access to state-subsided health care. The Dreamers\, who fall between the ages of 16–35\, must be enrolled in high school or already have earned a diploma or G.E.D. to qualify. Participants can renew their status every two years. \nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:The Diaz Trio Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a chamber music concert featuring The Diaz Trio. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then RSVP here by Thursday\, February 1. \nPROGRAM \nAndrés Cárdenes violin; Roberto Díaz\, viola; Andrés Díaz\, cello \nFranz Schubert – String Trio (fragment) D. 471\nKrzysztof Penderecki – String Trio\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Divertimento in E flat major\, K. 563 \n“…violist Roberto Díaz and cellist Andrés Díaz dispatched the intricate figuration deftly\, their interplay with [Andrés] Cárdenes seamless … the final two movements were played with robust energy\, the blend of instrumental timbres always richly luminous and beautiful.”\nSouth Florida Classical Review \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nOne of the few professional string trios in existence\, the Díaz Trio is internationally revered as one of finest chamber ensembles performing today\, garnering magnificent praise from critics and audiences alike. Composed of three dynamic artists\, violinist Andrés Cárdenes\, violist Roberto Díaz\, and cellist Andrés Díaz\, the trio performs regularly in recital and at festivals around the world. In 1993\, at the invitation of Isaac Stern\, the trio performed at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall to celebrate the next one hundred years of music making at Carnegie Hall. Other highlights include performances in Los Angeles\, Seattle\, Pittsburgh\, Boston\, Austin\, and Lincoln Center in New York\, as well as the Mostly Mozart Festival at the Kennedy Center\, the Newport Festival\, Cape and Islands Chamber Music Festival\, Festival de San Miguel de Allende in Mexico\, St. Cyprien International Festival of the Arts on France\, the Kuhmo Festival in Finland and an extensive tour of Chile. Recent debut tours of Canada\, in collaboration with Canadian pianist Angela Cheng and guitarist Norbert Kraft\, were a resounding success. The Díaz Trio also performs regularly at both the Corcoran Gallery and Phillips Collection in Washington\, DC. The Díaz Trio serves as Trio in Residence at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. \nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. Since music is mostly a listening activity\, any extra sounds that are not part of the music can get in the way and will distract and disturb the musicians and other audience members. \nBefore the Concert\nWear something you might wear to a special event – because it is!. Please don’t wear anything that might be distracting (light up shoes\, clanging jewelry\, etc)\nArrive no later than 7:00 pm to get your tickets. \nBefore You Take Your Seat\nTake care of all rest room needs.\nLeave all food\, drink\, and gum outside\, in the lobby.\nLeave all cameras and recording devices outside\, as well. There are strict copyright guidelines about recording concerts.\nTurn off all cell phones\, pagers\, ipads\, watch sounds\, alarms\, or anything that might make a noise. The only sounds that should be heard are the ones that appear in the musical score (and the audience reaction after the music). \nOnce You Take Your Seat\nA parent or guardian must sit next to each child.\nRemain seated and quiet while the musicians are playing. Do not get up during the concert or change seats.\nNo talking\, whispering\, sighing\, tapping or kicking feet\, or rattling of programs or papers.\nBe sure to sit without fidgeting so you don’t distract your neighbors or the performers on stage. \nFeel free to leave during intermission\, if this is a late night for your children; and if they fall asleep during the concert\, that’s okay too. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!Sean

SUMMARY:Consciousness\, Creative Expression\, and Physical Morphology
DESCRIPTION:Sound and Spirituality: Exploring Traditions\nAs we continue exploring the role sound plays in our spirituality\, the Spiritual Life Committee is offering two interfaith programs in March that focus on sound and its use in worship and prayer. Both programs follow Sanctuary worship and feature a light lunch. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or musical ability is needed. \nIn our first program on Sun.\, March 4\, Michael Dodin will share insights and research into the special nature of sound as it relates to consciousness\, creative expression\, and physical morphology. You also will have an opportunity to share in musical meditations/prayers using the Names of God in the vibrations of the original biblical languages. \nAlso\, make plans to join us for our second program\, Kirtan with Ashely O’Hara. \n\nAbout our presenter\nMichael Dodin currently works with the Academy for Future Science (a U.N. Non-Governmental Organization) as director of multimedia\, musician\, audio engineer\, and U.N. youth delegate. He studied Western classical music and composition on a variety of instruments\, as well as classical Indian music and percussion on the Tabla. In 2015\, he performed at the Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City. Michael’s musical compositions were featured in The Power of One Voice—a documentary by Mark Dixon\, which details the life and work of environmental scientist Rachel Carson (also the author of the book Silent Spring).

SUMMARY:Ebene String Quartet Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a chamber music concert featuring Ebene String Quartet. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then RSVP here by Wednesday\, March 7. \nPROGRAM \nFranz Joseph Haydn  – Quartet in D minor\, Op. 76\, No. 2 “Fifths”\nGabriel Fauré  – Quartet in E minor\, Op. 121\nJazz and crossover works to be announced from the stage \nABOUT THE ARTIST \n\n\nPierre Colombet – violin\nGabriel Le Magadure – violin\nMarie Chelemme – viola\nRaphaël Merlin – violoncello \n“A string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band\,” wrote the New York Times after a 2009 performance by the Quatuor Ebène. The ensemble opened with Debussy and Haydn and then improvised on a film music theme—with equal enthusiasm and passion. What began in 1999 as a distraction in the conservatory practice rooms for the four young French musicians has become a trademark of the Quatuor Ebène\, and has generated lasting reverberations in the music scene. The four breathe new life into chamber music through their consistently direct\, open-minded perspective on the works. Regardless of the genre\, they approach the music with humility and respect. They change styles with gusto\, and yet remain themselves: with all the passion that they experience for each piece\, and which they bring to the stage and to their audiences directly and authentically. There is no single word that describes their style: they’ve created their own. Their traditional repertoire does not suffer from their engagement with other genres; rather\, their free association with diverse styles brings a productive excitement to their music. From the beginning\, the complexity of their oeuvre has been greeted enthusiastically by audiences and critics. After studies with the Quatuor Ysaÿe in Paris and with Gábor Takács\, Eberhard Feltz and György Kurtág\, the quartet had an unprecedented victory at the ARD Music Competition 2004. This marked the beginning of their rise\, which has culminated in numerous prizes and awards. The Quatuor Ebène’s concerts are marked by a special élan. With their charismatic playing\, their fresh approach to tradition and their open engagement with new forms\, the musicians have been successful in reaching a wide audience of young listeners; they communicate their knowledge in regular master classes at the Conservatoire Paris and at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. In 2005\, the ensemble won the Belmont Prize of the Forberg-Schneider Foundation. Since then\, the Foundation has worked closely with the musicians\, making it possible for them to play priceless old Italian instruments from private collections. The Quatuor Ebène’s debut CD\, featuring works by Haydn\, was praised unanimously by critics. Further recordings of music by Bartók\, Debussy and Fauré have won numerous awards\, including the Gramophone Award\, the ECHO Klassik and the Midem Classic Award. Their 2010 album Fiction and the accompanying DVD\, a live recording of jazz arrangements\, has only solidified their unique position in the chamber music scene. In 2013\, the ensemble put out an acclaimed CD\, Felix and Fanny\, with works by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy\, which won a BBC Music MagazineAward. Their second crossover CD\, Brazil\, a collaboration with Stacey Kent\, appeared early in 2014. Highlights of the 2015/2016 season included concerts in the Wigmore Hall in London\, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris\, Munich’s Herkulessaal\, and Carnegie Hall in New York\, alongside numerous festival concerts in Prague and Bremen\, among others. Quatuor Ebène were the Prize Winner in Residence at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in the Summer of 2015. \n \n\n\nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!
