SUMMARY:Consciousness\, Creative Expression\, and Physical Morphology
DESCRIPTION:Sound and Spirituality: Exploring Traditions\nAs we continue exploring the role sound plays in our spirituality\, the Spiritual Life Committee is offering two interfaith programs in March that focus on sound and its use in worship and prayer. Both programs follow Sanctuary worship and feature a light lunch. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or musical ability is needed. \nIn our first program on Sun.\, March 4\, Michael Dodin will share insights and research into the special nature of sound as it relates to consciousness\, creative expression\, and physical morphology. You also will have an opportunity to share in musical meditations/prayers using the Names of God in the vibrations of the original biblical languages. \nAlso\, make plans to join us for our second program\, Kirtan with Ashely O’Hara. \n\nAbout our presenter\nMichael Dodin currently works with the Academy for Future Science (a U.N. Non-Governmental Organization) as director of multimedia\, musician\, audio engineer\, and U.N. youth delegate. He studied Western classical music and composition on a variety of instruments\, as well as classical Indian music and percussion on the Tabla. In 2015\, he performed at the Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City. Michael’s musical compositions were featured in The Power of One Voice—a documentary by Mark Dixon\, which details the life and work of environmental scientist Rachel Carson (also the author of the book Silent Spring).

SUMMARY:Ebene String Quartet Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a chamber music concert featuring Ebene String Quartet. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then RSVP here by Wednesday\, March 7. \nPROGRAM \nFranz Joseph Haydn  – Quartet in D minor\, Op. 76\, No. 2 “Fifths”\nGabriel Fauré  – Quartet in E minor\, Op. 121\nJazz and crossover works to be announced from the stage \nABOUT THE ARTIST \n\n\nPierre Colombet – violin\nGabriel Le Magadure – violin\nMarie Chelemme – viola\nRaphaël Merlin – violoncello \n“A string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band\,” wrote the New York Times after a 2009 performance by the Quatuor Ebène. The ensemble opened with Debussy and Haydn and then improvised on a film music theme—with equal enthusiasm and passion. What began in 1999 as a distraction in the conservatory practice rooms for the four young French musicians has become a trademark of the Quatuor Ebène\, and has generated lasting reverberations in the music scene. The four breathe new life into chamber music through their consistently direct\, open-minded perspective on the works. Regardless of the genre\, they approach the music with humility and respect. They change styles with gusto\, and yet remain themselves: with all the passion that they experience for each piece\, and which they bring to the stage and to their audiences directly and authentically. There is no single word that describes their style: they’ve created their own. Their traditional repertoire does not suffer from their engagement with other genres; rather\, their free association with diverse styles brings a productive excitement to their music. From the beginning\, the complexity of their oeuvre has been greeted enthusiastically by audiences and critics. After studies with the Quatuor Ysaÿe in Paris and with Gábor Takács\, Eberhard Feltz and György Kurtág\, the quartet had an unprecedented victory at the ARD Music Competition 2004. This marked the beginning of their rise\, which has culminated in numerous prizes and awards. The Quatuor Ebène’s concerts are marked by a special élan. With their charismatic playing\, their fresh approach to tradition and their open engagement with new forms\, the musicians have been successful in reaching a wide audience of young listeners; they communicate their knowledge in regular master classes at the Conservatoire Paris and at the Colburn School in Los Angeles. In 2005\, the ensemble won the Belmont Prize of the Forberg-Schneider Foundation. Since then\, the Foundation has worked closely with the musicians\, making it possible for them to play priceless old Italian instruments from private collections. The Quatuor Ebène’s debut CD\, featuring works by Haydn\, was praised unanimously by critics. Further recordings of music by Bartók\, Debussy and Fauré have won numerous awards\, including the Gramophone Award\, the ECHO Klassik and the Midem Classic Award. Their 2010 album Fiction and the accompanying DVD\, a live recording of jazz arrangements\, has only solidified their unique position in the chamber music scene. In 2013\, the ensemble put out an acclaimed CD\, Felix and Fanny\, with works by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy\, which won a BBC Music MagazineAward. Their second crossover CD\, Brazil\, a collaboration with Stacey Kent\, appeared early in 2014. Highlights of the 2015/2016 season included concerts in the Wigmore Hall in London\, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris\, Munich’s Herkulessaal\, and Carnegie Hall in New York\, alongside numerous festival concerts in Prague and Bremen\, among others. Quatuor Ebène were the Prize Winner in Residence at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival in the Summer of 2015. \n \n\n\nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. Since music is mostly a listening activity\, any extra sounds that are not part of the music can get in the way and will distract and disturb the musicians and other audience members. \nBefore the Concert\nWear something you might wear to a special event – because it is!. Please don’t wear anything that might be distracting (light up shoes\, clanging jewelry\, etc)\nArrive no later than 7:00 pm to get your tickets. \nBefore You Take Your Seat\nTake care of all rest room needs.\nLeave all food\, drink\, and gum outside\, in the lobby.\nLeave all cameras and recording devices outside\, as well. There are strict copyright guidelines about recording concerts.\nTurn off all cell phones\, pagers\, ipads\, watch sounds\, alarms\, or anything that might make a noise. The only sounds that should be heard are the ones that appear in the musical score (and the audience reaction after the music). \nOnce You Take Your Seat\nA parent or guardian must sit next to each child.\nRemain seated and quiet while the musicians are playing. Do not get up during the concert or change seats.\nNo talking\, whispering\, sighing\, tapping or kicking feet\, or rattling of programs or papers.\nBe sure to sit without fidgeting so you don’t distract your neighbors or the performers on stage. \nFeel free to leave during intermission\, if this is a late night for your children; and if they fall asleep during the concert\, that’s okay too. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Gifts of Women
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special Sanctuary worship service as we celebrate the Gifts of Women. \nEach year\, in partnership with Presbyterian Women\, ELPC selects a Sunday close to International Women’s Day (Thursday\, March 8)\, during which we lift up the gifts of women and acknowledge the challenges that women throughout the world continue to face. \nThe Rev. Heather Schoenewolf will preach and her sermon will be titled “Pathway to Peace: Refusing to be Silenced.” In conjunction with ELPC’s Lenten sermon series on the “Voices of Peace\,” Pastor Heather will feature the peacemaking work of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. Our service will include women liturgists\, ushers\, and greeters. \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

SUMMARY:Kirtan with Ashley O’Hara
DESCRIPTION:Sound and Spirituality: Exploring Traditions\nAs we continue exploring the role sound plays in our spirituality\, the Spiritual Life Committee is offering two interfaith programs in March that focus on sound and its use in worship and prayer. Both programs follow Sanctuary worship and feature a light lunch. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or musical ability is needed. \nIn our second program on Sun.\, March 18\, Ashley O’Hara will be with us to explore Kirtan—a form of devotion found in the Bhakti tradition of Hinduism. Bhakti Yoga is all about love\, service and surrender to the Divine. Simply put\, Kirtan is the practice of singing and chanting the names of the Divine. When we chant together\, something magical happens. Kirtan is mantra meditation that gets you out of your analytical mind and into your heart and into the present moment. It’s a opportunity to let your heart sing and be heard. You have to experience this magic for yourself. \nCome learn more about Bhakti and be uplifted by chanting with us. Don’t worry about your singing voice\, it’s all an offering. Join us for an afternoon of Bhakti Yoga philosophy\, chanting\, and storytelling. \n\nAbout our presenter\nAshley O’Hara (RYT-500) has been practicing yoga for a decade. Her love for alignment flow\, yoga philosophy\, and mantra meditation are the cornerstones of her practice. Ashley completed her 200-hour YogaWorks training in 2013 with Anna Gilbert Zupon\, and completed her 300-hour Bhakti Yoga training in India with Supersoul Yoga\, led by Raghunath and Brij Cappo in 2016. Ashley believes the practice of yoga and chanting scared mantras awakens our hearts and connects us with the energy of Love. She is excited to share her deep love of Bhakti yoga\, as well as encourage others to come play\, explore\, sing\, and be inspired. \nAshley also plays harmonium and loves to lead others in Kirtan—the singing of mantras. When not immersed in yoga\, Ashley is a practicing psychotherapist at a community mental health center or hanging out with her awesome kitties\, Sthira and Sukha.

SUMMARY:March for Our Lives - PGH to DC
DESCRIPTION:Youth organizers and students from across the Pittsburgh region will take buses on March 24th to join the national March for Our Lives day of action to end gun violence. We stand in solidarity with survivors of the Parkland Florida shooting and demand that our lawmakers make gun reform a top priority to end this cycle of gun violence in our schools and our communities at large. \nThe time to lift your voice and change our laws has come. \nHope Academy has chartered a tour bus to leave from East Liberty Presbyterian Church around 4:30 am and return around midnight. We can take 40-45 high school students and 10-15 chaperones (college students or parents/guardians). High school students need to have parent/guardian permission documents signed before their spot will be reserved for the trip. Chaperones need to have clearances – Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History and Child Abuse History Clearance – these are free for volunteers. \nWe are partnering with One Pennsylvania and will caravan with at least two other buses of young people from Pittsburgh. There will be a kickoff meeting on Monday\, March 19 to pick up tickets\, make signs and get to know the other students attending the march. There will also be a training session for chaperones/bus captains. One Pennsylvania is organizing all of this\, along with a t-shirt making event later that week at AIR studio on the North Side. Lots of plans are being made and updates will be emailed to those who apply. \nPriority will be given to students from East Liberty\,  Hope Academy\, ELPC’s youth group and Woodland Hills High School. When our bus is filled\, applications will be forwarded to One Pennsylvania. Their buses will be leaving from Schenley Plaza in Oakland\, with additional stops east of Pittsburgh. \nThis trip is generously supported by The Sherman Evans Fund at The Pittsburgh Foundation. \nWe have filled all of the buses for the March for Our Lives in Washington\, DC on SAT March 24\nPlease consider supporting the work of our partner\, One Pennsylvania\, by clicking here to make a donation. SUMMARY:Canceled: Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:We will not meet for Qi Gong or Mindfulness Meditation on Maundy Thursday. Please join us for our Maundy Thursday service\, 7 pm\, led by Pastor Patrice. \n\nJoin us and Susan Spangler as we learn more about Mindfulness Meditation and engage in this ancient prayer form together. We begin with Qi Gong and move into meditation instruction\, guided meditations\, and practices for supporting mindfulness in everyday life. \nMindfulness is the moment-to-moment awareness of our experience with an accepting\, non-judgmental\, kind attention. In this ongoing practice\, we’ll explore and deepen our experience of mindfulness. Our weekly time together will include meditation instruction\, guided meditations\, and practices for supporting mindfulness in everyday life. \nBoth those who are new to meditation and those with meditation experience are heartily welcome.
