SUMMARY:Systemic Racism: A Non-Binary Historical Timeline
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2018\, ELPC’s Mission Board will be presenting a series of events\, titled Facing Systemic Racism. Discussions of racism often involve our personal experiences. What we may not realize is how racism in our social systems and institutions impacts our racial relationships. To tackle racism in our society\, we need to acknowledge the systems in our society that create institutional racism and racial privilege. \nJoin us for the second program in our series\, titled “Systemic Racism: A Historical Timeline.” We will be led by ELPC members Eddie Willson and Sherry Anderson\, who are part of the Anti-Racism Transformation Team of Pittsburgh Presbytery. \nWe will share a potluck dinner together\, beginning at 5:30 pm. Bring a side or dessert to share. \nChildcare is available with prior registration by calling 412.441.3800 x140. \n\nOther Upcoming Events\nDiscovering Our Implicit Bias | Saturday\, June 9\, 5:30 pm \nSpecial Film Series | Sundays in July\, 12 pm \nUncovering Your Racial Autobiography | Saturday\, September 22\, 5:30 pm \nAcknowledging White Privilege | Saturday\, October 20\, 5:30 pm

SUMMARY:Hope Academy Spring 2018 Recital #2
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s young musicians present an afternoon and evening of recitals! This is a great opportunity for families who are interested in private music instruction for their children to come and see Hope Academy’s program in action and meet the teaching artists. \nRecitals will take place in the ELPC Sanctuary\, Social Hall\, Music Room and Chapel. \nFamilies should bring something to share during a reception following each recital (cookies\, brownies\, cupcakes). Please make sure food items are nut free\, can be hand held and are not potentially messy. \nPlease review our Recital Etiquette Guidelines at the end of this post \nRECITAL SCHEDULE\n1:30 pm – Social Hall\nVIOLIN\, VIOLA AND SUZUKI VIOLIN STUDENTS OF KATHLEEN ANDREWS\nRehearse with accompanist at 12:45 pm \n1:30 pm – Music Room\nVOICE STUDENTS OF GIZEL RODRIGUEZ\nRehearse with accompanist on SAT May 19 at 12 noon and before the recital at 12:30\nGUITAR\, BASS AND UKULELE STUDENTS OF EMMA COX\nWarm up at 1:00 pm in 341\nDRUM AND PERCUSSION STUDENTS OF JULIAN POWELL\nWarm up at 1:00 pm in the drum room – 335\nBRASS STUDENTS OF KAREN SLONEKER\nWarm up at 1:00 pm in 335 \n3:30 pm – Sanctuary\nCELLO AND SUZUKI CELLO STUDENTS OF BETH GOLDSTEIN-McKEE AND ANA DIAZ\nBeth Goldstein-McKee’s students rehearse with accompanist at 2:30 pm in the Sanctuary. \nAna Diaz’s students rehearse with accompanist at 2:45 pm in the Chapel. \n4:30 pm – Sanctuary \nPIANO STUDENTS OF HELGA SCHEIBERT\nSAXOPHONE & CLARINET ENSEMBLE AND STUDENTS OF BEN BARSON\nWarm up and rehearse with Flute Choir at 3:30 pm in 60 (ground floor)\nFLUTE CHOIR AND FLUTE STUDENTS OF BRITTANY TROTTER\nWarm up and rehearse with Sax/Clarinet Ensemble at 3:30 pm in 60 (ground floor)\nRehearse with accompanist at 4:00 pm in the Chapel \nRECITAL ETIQUETTE\nRecitals are special occasions designed to give students a chance to share their music and gain valuable performance experience. They provide a benchmark to measure growth from year to year\, and an incentive for students to practice and polish pieces they are working on. \nThere will be many recital sessions scheduled throughout the day in various rooms throughout the church building. Please do not ask to have your child perform at the beginning or the end of their recital session – students and families are expected to be on time and stay for the entire recital that their children are performing in. We are organizing the recital sessions to be about an hour long. \nLearning about and practicing recital etiquette is an important part of a student’s musical education\, so we ask that families read and discuss these guidelines with their children. \nPerformer Etiquette \n\nDress appropriately. Choose conservative over casual in terms of shoe styles\, hem length of dresses and straps for tops. Avoid jewelry that makes noise as you move; heels that are difficult to walk in; and sleeves that get in the way of playing.\nBe on time. Your teacher will let you know when and where to meet before the recital to warm up. This will be at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the recital. If you are playing with an accompanist\, you may be asked to arrive earlier to rehearse together.\nBe prepared. Make sure you have your music\, instrument and any necessary accessories before leaving home (bow\, rosin\, capo\, tuner\, etc.)\nBe respectful. Refrain from whispering\, talking\, or using electronic devices. Show the other performers the same courtesy you want to be shown.\nEnter and exit with confidence. You should bow at the end and acknowledge the accompanist (if you have one). Teachers will go over this in lessons.\n\nAudience Etiquette \n\nArrive on time or a little early. Late arrivals are distracting to the audience\, and they can be unnerving for the performer.\nTurn off cell phones and other electronic devices. Ring tones and electronic chirps are distracting; and texting\, reading emails and playing games while students are performing is disrespectful.\nDo not cause distractions. Bring something (a quiet game or book) to keep young children under 8 years old occupied. Children over 8 should be able to sit quietly and watch.\nTake disruptive infants or toddlers out of the recital as soon as they become fussy. Please sit close to an aisle so that you can leave without too much commotion. We will come to get you when your child performs.\nDo not talk\, whisper\, rattle papers or eat during the recital.\nStay for the entire performance to show respect for all of the musicians.\n\nPhotos and Video \n\nSpace will be reserved so that a parent/guardian can move forward to take photos or videos of their child performing. No flash photography\, please.\n\nReception \n\nEach family should bring something to share (nut-free cookies\, brownies\, cupcakes\, fruit\, drinks). Make sure it is something that can be hand-held.and is not potentially messy.\n\n

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Pentecost Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Pentecost is the annual event in which we celebrate the birth of the early Christian church by remembering how the Holy Spirit inspired the first disciples. We wear red as a symbol of the fire that touched women and men that day and re-commit ourselves to sharing the good news of Christ. \nThis year\, Pentecost Sunday\, May 20\, is extra-special\, because we will confirm a group of young people and celebrate the final stage of our year-long building renovation project. The bulk of the work is finally done! While final tests and touch-ups are completed\, we will celebrate the excellent renovations and improvements through special words\, music\, and events. Mike Tomaro and his jazz combo from Duquesne University will be with us during worship\, and then there will be opportunities for you to tour the building\, hear from hosts at different locations about the improvements\, and offer your own prayers for God’s architectural blessings. \nJoin us for this great day as we celebrate our past\, rejoice in the present improvements\, and look forward to beginning our 200th year of ministry in East Liberty! \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

Communities throughout time have realized that by coming together they can change the world. Love will always win against hate and fear. \nTickets will be available at the door or at RCCPittsburgh.com. A sign language interpreter will be present. \nIf the weather is rainy\, the performance will take place in the Social Hall. \n\nThe choir is an Artist in Residence at ELPC\, where they rehearse and perform. SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Youth Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This week\, our Senior High youth will lead us during worship! This special service is an annual tradition at ELPC where we celebrate the gifts and accomplishments of our youth while praising God for the work of the Holy Spirit upon and through the youth of our church. \nThe youth have written the entire liturgy\, selected the songs\, and will lead us in worship. Graduating Seniors will share their faith stories\, and receive a blessing by the congregation as they prepare for the next steps in their respective life journeys. This year\, students completing third grade will be presented with a gift of a Bible from the church\, that they might be nurtured in God’s word.

SUMMARY:Systemic Racism: Discovering Our Implicit Bias
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2018\, ELPC’s Mission Board will be presenting a series of events\, titled Facing Systemic Racism. Discussions of racism often involve our personal experiences. What we may not realize is how racism in our social systems and institutions impacts our racial relationships. To tackle racism in our society\, we need to acknowledge the systems in our society that create institutional racism and racial privilege. \nJoin us for the third program in our series\, titled “Systemic Racism: Discovering Our Implicit Bias.” Our discussion and activities will explore these questions: \n\nWhat exactly is implicit bias?\nHow does it work?\nWhy is it important to understand and recognize it?\nWhat can I do about it?\n\nWe will share a potluck dinner together\, beginning at 5:30 pm. Bring a side or dessert to share. \nChildcare is available with prior registration by calling 412.441.3800 x140. \n\nOther Upcoming Events\nSpecial Film Series | Sundays in July\, 12 pm \nUncovering Your Racial Autobiography | Saturday\, September 22\, 5:30 pm \nAcknowledging White Privilege | Saturday\, October 20\, 5:30 pm
