SUMMARY:RCC Pride Concert
DESCRIPTION:Renaissance City Choir (RCC)\, Western Pennsylvania’s only LGBTQA (Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Queer\, and Allies) choral group\, will be at ELPC to present their 2018 Pride Concert\, Joined by Heart: Love Will Always Win! \nTogether nothing is impossible. Communities throughout time have realized that by coming together they can change the world. As we walk through our day\, or sing through our concert\, or march the streets of our city\, we must remember the power that we have when we are joined by heart. With this concert\, we especially honor our transgender\, gender-queer\, gender non-binary\, and two-spirit family members\, who help to teach us that there are more colors in our crayon box than just pink and blue. Love will always win against hate and fear. \nTickets will be available at the door or at RCCPittsburgh.com. A sign language interpreter will be present. \nIf the weather is rainy\, the performance will take place in the Social Hall. \n\nThe choir is an Artist in Residence at ELPC\, where they rehearse and perform. RCC affirms and celebrates LGBTQ+ identity through the unifying power of music. \n

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Youth Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This week\, our Senior High youth will lead us during worship! This special service is an annual tradition at ELPC where we celebrate the gifts and accomplishments of our youth while praising God for the work of the Holy Spirit upon and through the youth of our church. \nThe youth have written the entire liturgy\, selected the songs\, and will lead us in worship. Graduating Seniors will share their faith stories\, and receive a blessing by the congregation as they prepare for the next steps in their respective life journeys. This year\, students completing third grade will be presented with a gift of a Bible from the church\, that they might be nurtured in God’s word. \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

SUMMARY:Systemic Racism: Discovering Our Implicit Bias
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2018\, ELPC’s Mission Board will be presenting a series of events\, titled Facing Systemic Racism. Discussions of racism often involve our personal experiences. What we may not realize is how racism in our social systems and institutions impacts our racial relationships. To tackle racism in our society\, we need to acknowledge the systems in our society that create institutional racism and racial privilege. \nJoin us for the third program in our series\, titled “Systemic Racism: Discovering Our Implicit Bias.” Our discussion and activities will explore these questions: \n\nWhat exactly is implicit bias?\nHow does it work?\nWhy is it important to understand and recognize it?\nWhat can I do about it?\n\nWe will share a potluck dinner together\, beginning at 5:30 pm. Bring a side or dessert to share. \nChildcare is available with prior registration by calling 412.441.3800 x140. \n\nOther Upcoming Events\nSpecial Film Series | Sundays in July\, 12 pm \nUncovering Your Racial Autobiography | Saturday\, September 22\, 5:30 pm \nAcknowledging White Privilege | Saturday\, October 20\, 5:30 pm

SUMMARY:Canceled: Centering Meditation
DESCRIPTION:There will be no Centering Meditation on Wed.\, July 4. Our regular schedule resumes on Wed.\, July 11. \n\nDrawn from the ancient Christian contemplative tradition\, centering prayer is presented in an updated\, accessible four-step method. The Centering Prayer group aims to sit in silence for 20 minutes of prayer\, and supports its members in their ongoing practice of this transforming way of being with God. Centering Prayer is a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. Attendance every week is not required–you are welcome to join us anytime. The group meets every Thursday evening throughout the year. \n

SUMMARY:Summer Film Series: White Man's Burden
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Mission Board and Mission Committees invite you to our annual Summer Film Festival on Sundays in July! This year’s documentaries and movies are a continuation of our on-going systemic racism series. Join us in the Social Hall following worship to view the movies\, discuss the themes\, and enjoy lunch together. \nPlease note\, we request that no children are present during this week’s film due to profanity. \nThis week’s feature\, White Man’s Burden\, takes place in an alternate universe where successful African-Americans live in gated communities and impoverished Caucasians populate crime-ridden\, inner-city ghettos. When African-American mogul Thaddeus Thomas (Harry Belafonte) wrongly accuses Caucasian Louis Pinnock (John Travolta) of being a Peeping Tom\, Pinnock loses his job and watches as his family falls apart. In a desperate attempt to repair his life\, Pinnock takes Thomas hostage and demands reinstatement at the factory where he The psychological effects of poverty are far-reaching\, and statistically\, women are more likely to feel the impact. Dominique\, Veniecia\, and Lou Ann lead vastly different lives\, yet their stories intersect and parallel in surprising ways. We Wear the Masks\, which was filmed in Pittsburgh\, digs deeply into the psychology of poverty to shine a spotlight on an often underestimated segment of society. Tammy Thompson\, the film’s producer and executive director of Circles of Greater Pittsburgh\, will lead our discussion afterwards. \n1.5 hours | Hosted by the Peace Committee

SUMMARY:Summer Film Series: We Wear the Mask
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Mission Board and Mission Committees invite you to our annual Summer Film Festival on Sundays in July! This year’s documentaries and movies are a continuation of our on-going systemic racism series. Join us in the Social Hall following worship to view the movies\, discuss the themes\, and enjoy lunch together. \nThis week’s feature\, We Wear the Mask: The Hidden Face of Women in Poverty\, explores how the psychological effects of poverty are far-reaching\, and why women are more likely to feel the impact. \n1 hour | Hosted by the Neighbors Committee
