SUMMARY:Artemis String Quartet - Chamber Music Pittsburgh Concert
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a chamber music concert featuring ARTEMIS STRING QUARTET. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then RSVP here by Friday\, February 8 at 12 noon. \nTo RSVP\, click HERE \nARTEMIS STRING QUARTET\nVineta Sareika – violin\nAnthea Kreston – violin\nGregor Sigl – viola\nEckart Runge – violoncello \nPROGRAM\nBarber Adagio from Quartet No. 1\, Op. 11\nBritten Quartet No. 2 in C major\, Op. 36\nSchubert Quartet No. 14 in D minor\, D. 810 “Death and the Maiden” \n \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nArtemis Quartet gives concerts for all great musical centres and international festivals in Europe\, the United States\, Asia\, South America and Australia. Since 2004 the ensemble creates own cycles at the chamber music hall of Berlin Philharmonie\, since 2011 at Wiener Konzerthaus (together with Belcea Quartet) and with the beginning of season 2016/2017 at Prince Regent Theatre Munich. \nFrom the beginning the collaboration with musical colleagues has been a major inspiration for the ensemble. Thus\, Artemis Quartet has toured with notable musicians such as Sabine Meyer\, Elisabeth Leonskaja\, Juliane Banse and Jörg Widmann. Various recordings document the artistic cooperation with several partners\, for example the piano quintets by Schuhmann and Brahms with Leif Ove Andsnes\, the Schubert quintet with Truls Mørk or Arnold Schönberg’s ’Verklärte Nacht’ with Thomas Kakuska and Valentin Erben from Alban Berg Quartet. \nHOW TO BE A GOOD AUDIENCE MEMBER\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. Since music is mostly a listening activity\, any extra sounds that are not part of the music can get in the way and will distract and disturb the musicians and other audience members. \nBefore the Concert\nWear something you might wear to a special event – because it is!. Please don’t wear anything that might be distracting (light up shoes\, clanging jewelry\, etc)\nArrive no later than 7:00 pm to get your tickets. \nBefore You Take Your Seat\nTake care of all rest room needs.\nLeave all food\, drink\, and gum outside\, in the lobby.\nLeave all cameras and recording devices outside\, as well. There are strict copyright guidelines about recording concerts.\nTurn off all cell phones\, pagers\, ipads\, watch sounds\, alarms\, or anything that might make a noise. The only sounds that should be heard are the ones that appear in the musical score (and the audience reaction after the music). \nOnce You Take Your Seat\nA parent or guardian must sit next to each child.\nRemain seated and quiet while the musicians are playing. Do not get up during the concert or change seats.\nNo talking\, whispering\, sighing\, tapping or kicking feet\, or rattling of programs or papers.\nBe sure to sit without fidgeting so you don’t distract your neighbors or the performers on stage. \nFeel free to leave during intermission\, if this is a late night for your children; and if they fall asleep during the concert\, that’s okay too. This should be an enjoyable experience for them\, and you!

SUMMARY:Heretics\, Doubters\, and Other Saints
DESCRIPTION:Because what we believe has everything to do with how we pray\, the Spiritual Life Committee (SLC) welcomes you to the next gathering of our Heretics\, Doubters and Other Saints group. \nDo you secretly think that if everyone actually knew what you believe—and what you do NOT believe—that you would not be welcome in church? Do you have some deep seated doubts about certain parts of the Christian story? Do you have to cross your fingers when you recite parts of the Apostle’s Creed? Well\, you may feel like you are alone; but\, you are not. \nTennyson famously said it\, “There lives more faith in honest doubt\, than in half the creeds.” And it is in that spirit that the SLC presents this quarterly time to come together with others who have also been carrying around their secret doubts and questions\, to talk about the wide breadth of theology within the Presbyterian church\, and to explore how your personal faith might be more complete. \nWe will share a light lunch and ask questions together. Remember\, there are no right or wrong thoughts here.

They draw from a diverse repertoire\, including works originally for piano and orchestra; works original to piano and organ; their own transcriptions; and solo offerings. \nFormed in 2013\, The Arsenal Duo made their debut performance at Youngstown\, Ohio’s historic Stambaugh Auditorium\, where they attracted one of the largest audiences since the restoration of the hall’s E.M. Skinner pipe organ. The duo returned to Stambaugh to record several tracks for a forthcoming recording. They have also been presented at Pittsburgh’s East Liberty Presbyterian Church and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral\, Christ Episcopal Church in Warren\, Ohio\, and National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. \nThe 2015-2016 season had the duo playing concerts in Colorado\, Virginia\, Ohio\, Illinois\, Michigan\, and Pennsylvania. The 2016-2017 season includes concerts in New Canaan\, CT\, Wilson College in Chambersburg\, PA\, Dearborn\, MI\, Tarentum\, PA\, and an invitation to return to Stambaugh Auditorium on July 3\, 2017 as featured performers for the Great Lakes Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists. \nNathan Carterette \nHailed as “wonderfully poetic\,” (Westfalen Post) and “very compelling in his power and presence” (International Composer)\, Nathan Carterette has distinguished himself in the concert world by performing a huge range of works from Elizabethan keyboard music to music written today. His innovative programming has inspired audiences to approach unfamiliar music with open ears\, and familiar music with new appreciation. \nMr. Carterette has performed in such venues as Weill Recital Hall and the Yamaha Piano Salon of New York City\, the Gasteig in Munich\, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe of Hamburg\, and Cleveland’s Trinity Cathedral. He has been presented in several universities such as the Berklee School of Music\, Cleveland Institute of Music\, Radford University\, Drake University\, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory\, and Carnegie Mellon. \nEducated at Yale University\, where he studied with Boris Berman\, Mr. Carterette began his piano studies at the age of eleven with Cleveland’s legendary Birute and Anthony Smetona. A chance encounter in 2004 with Welsh composer-pianist Dafydd Llywelyn led to an invitation for intensive private study in Germany\, both of the traditional repertoire and Llywelyn’s works. \nEdward Alan Moore \nEdward Alan Moore\, native of Girard\, OH\, is Organist/Music Director at East Liberty Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh\, PA. Previously he was a member of the organ faculty at The Catholic University of America Benjamin T. Rome School of Music in Washington\, DC\, Director of Music Ministries at The Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean\, VA\, and Minister of Music at National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, studying organ with Michael Farris\, improvisation with Gerre Hancock and Richard Erickson\, and serving as research assistant for Professor Wm. A. Little. \nAs a recitalist\, Dr. Moore was the first organist chosen to perform on the Millennium Stage concert series at the Kennedy Center in 2004. Other recitals include those at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City\, the Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta\, Princeton University Chapel\, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles\, and the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen\, MI. \nIn the past few years Dr. Moore’s performance schedule included concerts at various locations in the Pittsburgh area and at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine and the Riverside Church in New York City. As a choral accompanist\, he has been the featured organist with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh\, where his performance was described as “lucid and often glorious” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

SUMMARY:No Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:There will be no worship services on Sunday\, May 5\, due to the route of the Pittsburgh Marathon. Our regular worship schedule resumes next Sunday\, May 12. \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

SUMMARY:Hope Academy Spring Recitals #1
DESCRIPTION:The following studios will have recitals on SUN May 5 \n\n\n3:30 pm     Ben Barson (Saxophone\, Clarinet and Ensemble) \n3:30 pm     Doris Weir and Agnieska Sornek (piano) \n5:30 pm     Gizelxanath Rodriguez (voice) \n\n\nRecitals are special occasions designed to give students a chance to share their music and gain valuable performance experience. They provide a benchmark to measure growth from year to year\, and an incentive for students to practice and polish pieces they are working on. \nThere will be many recital sessions scheduled throughout the day in various rooms throughout the church building. Please do not ask to have your child perform at the beginning or the end of their recital session – students and families are expected to be on time and stay for the entire recital that their children are performing in. We are organizing the recital sessions to be about an hour long. \nCOOKIE RECEPTION \nEach family is asked to bring cookies for a reception that will follow the recital. There will be two reception rooms in the front hallway\, leading to the Sanctuary. Rooms will be labeled so that cookies can be placed in the room that corresponds to the student’s studio. Please bring cookies only. It is best if they are on a disposable tray. \nRECITAL ETIQUETTE \nLearning about and practicing recital etiquette is an important part of a student’s musical education\, so we ask that families read and discuss these guidelines with their children. \nPerformer Etiquette \n\nDress appropriately. Choose conservative over casual in terms of shoe styles\, hem length of dresses and straps for tops.\nAvoid jewelry that makes noise as you move; heels that are difficult to walk in; and sleeves that get in the way of playing.\nBe on time. Your teacher will let you know when and where to meet before the recital to warm up. This will be at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the recital. If you are playing with an accompanist\, you may be asked to arrive earlier to rehearse together.\nBe prepared. Make sure you have your music\, instrument and any necessary accessories before leaving home (bow\, rosin\, capo\, tuner\, etc.)\nBe respectful. Refrain from whispering\, talking\, or using electronic devices. Show the other performers the same courtesy you want to be shown.\nEnter and exit with confidence. You should bow at the end and acknowledge the accompanist (if you have one). Teachers will go over this in lessons.\n\nAudience Etiquette \n\nArrive on time or a little early. Late arrivals are distracting to the audience\, and they can be unnerving for the performer.\nTurn off cell phones and other electronic devices. Ring tones and electronic chirps are distracting; and texting\, reading emails and playing games while students are performing is disrespectful.\nDo not cause distractions. Bring something (a quiet game or book) to keep young children under 8 years old occupied. Children over 8 should be able to sit quietly and watch.\nTake disruptive infants or toddlers out of the recital as soon as they become fussy. Please sit close to an aisle so that you can leave without too much commotion. We will come to get you when your child performs.\nDo not talk\, whisper\, rattle papers or eat during the recital.\nStay for the entire performance to show respect for all of the musicians.\n\nPhotos and Video \n\nNo flash photography\, please\nA group photo\, with the teacher\, will be taken at the end of each recital session.
