SUMMARY:Vigil for Racial Justice
DESCRIPTION:The verdicts delivered in the murder trial of George Floyd remind us that incidental accountability is still possible in today’s world—even as comprehensive justice and an end to systemic racism remain goals not yet accomplished. The memory of George Floyd gasping for breath beneath the literal knee of oppression haunts us. And the growing list of names of people killed by police shootings\, the rising injury and death toll caused by American gun violence\, and the widespread acts of racial bigotry inflicted on African Americans and people of color—including Asian Americans\, Pacific Islanders\, Latinx\, Native Americans and others—all of this compels us to gather as a witness fully committed to the work yet to be done. \nPeople are invited to stand vigil around ELPC holding up signs that reflect our community’s commitment to affirm Black Lives Matter\, that allow us to continue saying George Floyd’s name and invoke the names of other victims of racist and police-based violence\, and that acknowledge how the struggle for true justice extends before us\, calling us toward a horizon of equality\, equity\, and a Beloved Community. We ask that all participants be masked and willing to observe safe social distancing during this event. \nPlease join us for this ecumenical\, interfaith public vigil. May our combined presence be the voice crying out for waters of justice to pour down mightily in our land. May our common witness be the plowshare of hope fashioned from the broken swords and weapons of racial injustice. \n\nSponsored by National Black Presbyterian Caucus (Pittsburgh Chapter) and East Liberty Presbyterian Church \nPhoto by Jared Wickerham\, Pittsburgh City Paper

SUMMARY:A Conversation on Solitary Confinement and No-Knock Warrants
DESCRIPTION:The Justice Committee will host a conversation on Solitary Confinement and No-Knock Warrants (Breonna’s Law). In January and February\, we held petition signing events to get these two issues on the Primary Election Ballot for May 18. That effort was very successful and we would like to follow that up with an opportunity to review and discuss the data behind these two issues and how we can be informed voters. \nPlease join members of the Justice Committee and special guests to talk about these two initiatives in depth on Saturday\, May 8\, 7 pm. Attend the meeting via Zoom at tiny.cc/ballot-conversation. Or you may call 929.205.6099. Enter meeting ID 873 4623 6178 and passcode 621699 when prompted. \n Please Note: You must be a registered voter in Pittsburgh to vote for “Breonna’s Law.” You must be a registered voter in Allegheny County to vote for the solitary confinement initiative. If you live outside of Allegheny County\, we still welcome your participation in this important discussion.

SUMMARY:Hope Academy Student Performing in PPT's Black Ballerina
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy student\, Zora Rose\, will be performing in Pittsburgh Public Theater’s virtual production of Black Ballerina as part of their Classics N’at series. \nTickets are as little as $10 and your whole family can watch together\, at home from May 20-May 23. \nFor tickets: https://donate2.app/RPeWh2 \nFor information about how to stream the play: https://ppt.org/ppt_home/pages/19870-playtime \nAbout Black Ballerina from Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Website \nWritten by Stephen Fedo & Tim Rhoze\nDirected by Tim Rhoze \nMay 20-23\, 2021 \nTim Rhoze (Director of Public PlayTime’s Fires in the Mirror) returns to Pittsburgh Public Theater to direct this elegant story about the perseverance and principle it takes to thrive in the elite world of dance. Gliding through time\, the story portrays the struggle of three generations of incredibly skilled Black dancers struggling to keep their dreams on point in the face of discrimination. Equal parts grit and poetry\, Black Ballerina draws from the classic canon and iconic ballets to place the narrative of these stunning dancers at the center of the story. \nStarring Sean Blake\, Allison Cahill\, Jen Gorman\, Amy Landis\, Mike Magliocca\, Zora Rose\, Kara Roseborough\, Claire Sabatine\, Eldridge Shannon\, and Jacqueline Williams. \nContent: This story explores themes of generational racial trauma and includes adult situations and explicit language. While these are important topics to consider and discuss\, please note this content may not be appropriate for all viewers.

SUMMARY:Why Do We Have To Keep Talking About Race Anyway?
DESCRIPTION:“White people often say ‘I am colorblind\,’ ‘I don’t see race\,’ and ‘There is just the human race.’ They think people of color are obsessed with race and that alleging discrimination is itself racist\, divisive\, and playing the race card. They think that racism towards people of color no longer exists. So\, let’s examine evidence of historical and current racial discrimination in American life to see if race and racism are serious problems.” (Should we stop talking about Race? by Ralph Bangs) \nIf you are interested in this conversation about racial discrimination from the perspective of Dr. Beverly Harris-Schenz\, join the Facing Systemic Racism Team following Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, May 30. \nClick to Join

SUMMARY:Contemplative Activism Retreat with Cole Arthur Riley
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Life Committee is excited to bring in Cole Arthur Riley to lead a retreat on Contemplative Activism. Join us we learn how to adopt spiritual practices that suspend between the contemplative and pursuit of justice. In our activism\, spiritual contemplation can feel more like a precursor to the work of justice\, instead of a core part of it. Together\, we will explore the gift of a contemplative spirituality that is marked by liberating habits of storytelling\, emotion\, and embodiment. \nClick to Register \nRetreat Details\nThe cost is $50 (scholarships are available). Please register by Friday\, June 4. Like our previous online retreats\, we will gather via Zoom at scheduled times. Cole will speak and guide us in prayer\, a reflection\, and an embodied activity during each of these sessions\, as well as give suggestions and prompts for our own solitude and contemplation in between each session. Our themes will be as follows: \n\nFriday\, 6 pm | The Liberation of the Self\nExploring how insight into our interior lives can be an active justice practice\, as we talk about selfhood\, story\, and memory.\nSaturday\, 9 am | Liberating Emotion\nExamining how emotional truth-telling informs contemplation and activism—specifically emotions such as lament and anger.\nSaturday\, 1 pm | Contemplation & The Body\nDiscussing how contemplative habits can and should guide us into deeper connections with our bodies\, including the cost of justice-work on our bodies\, and contemplation as a healing force.\nSaturday\, 5 pm | Closing Prayer Service\nGathering in the graces and sharing our intentions.\n\n \n\nAbout Cole Arthur Riley\nCole Arthur Riley is a writer\, liturgist\, and speaker who is seeking a deeply contemplative life marked by embodiment and emotion. She is the founder and writer of Black Liturgies—a project seeking to integrate concepts of dignity\, lament\, rage\, justice\, rest\, and liberation with the practice of written prayer. She also serves as the content and spiritual formation manager for Chesterton House\, a Christian studies center at Cornell University.

SUMMARY:Kiss the Ground Viewing and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:What do climate stability\, healthy eating\, and beautiful landscapes have in common? They all depend on soil quality. Whether or not you’ve thought about what’s underfoot\, Kiss the Ground will give you a new appreciation for how critical it is to our health and well-being—and our planet’s future. \nJoin the Environmental Team following Summer worship on Sunday\, June 13\, for an online viewing of Kiss the Ground (45 mintues)\, as well as a conversation moderated by Stefani Danes. \nThe documentary examines a revolutionary group of activists\, scientists\, farmers\, and politicians who are leading a global movement of “Regenerative Agriculture.” We’ll see how dust bowls become Gardens of Eden\, as well as other great examples of the ways we can balance our climate\, replenish our vast water supplies\, and feed the world. Understanding how important soil is to all life\, we’ll also discover how important our everyday choices are to sustaining the life of the soil. \nJoin us via Zoom at tiny.cc/kiss-the-ground or by calling 646.558.8656.
