SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:This service is held in the sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. SUMMARY:Bridge Ballet and Bridge Chorus Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Auditions/placements for Hope Academy’s Bridge Ballet (in partnership with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre) and Bridge Chorus (in partnership with Pittsburgh School for the Choral Arts) will take place on Saturday\, April 2. Latecomers will not be admitted. \nBridge courses are for more committed and focused students who want to work with other young dancers and singers who share their level of discipline and enthusiasm. Punctuality\, attendance\, behavior and dress (proper dance clothing*) will be held to a higher standard and the expectation is that students will attend every class\, be on time and prepared\, and dressed appropriately. The dress code does not apply to the audition – please come in whatever dance clothing you currently have. \nBridge Ballet Audition (5 to 8 year olds)\n9 am in the Gym on the basement level \nBridge Chorus Audition (7 to 9 year olds)\n10 am in the 3rd floor Music Room \nPlease note: students who are slightly outside of the recommended age ranges may audition. Teaching artists will also invite current students who show potential and promise \nPlease RSVP for the either or both auditions HERE\nBridge courses run from April 9 – May 7 (5 sessions)\nBridge Ballet – Saturdays from 9:15 to 10:15 am for 5 to 8 year olds\nBridge Chorus – Saturdays from 10:30 to 11:30 am for 7 to 9 year olds \nTuition for each course is $40 + \n$10 registration fee. The Centering Prayer group aims to sit in silence for 20 minutes of prayer\, and supports its members in their ongoing practice of this transforming way of being with God. Centering Prayer is a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Christ. DESCRIPTION:This year’s August Wilson Monologue Contest will be held at the August Wilson Center and two Hope Academy students\, Laela Lumsden and Candace Burgess\, will compete. This competition provides an opportunity for high school students to perform an August Wilson monologue for a chance to win cash prizes and a trip to New York City. \nThe August Wilson Monologue Competition celebrates the writing of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright. August Wilson’s Century Cycle is an achievement in American theater. Each of the ten plays are set in a different decade of the twentieth century. At the core of each work are soaring\, lyrical monologues that take the song\, laughter\, pain\, and rich content of African American life and place it in the mouths of a great and varied ensemble of characters. \nThe August Wilson Monologue Competition is now held regionally in Pittsburgh\, New York\, Atlanta\, Seattle\, Chicago\, Boston\, Los Angeles\, Greensboro\, Dallas and Portland. In partnership with True Colors Theatre Company\, headed by Tony award winning Broadway and film director Kenny Leon. \nThree winners from Pittsburgh will be selected to travel to New York City for the May 2 finals. In addition to competing for cash and scholarship prizes\, the finalists will be treated to the new smash Broadway hit Hamilton and will meet with top industry actors. For example\, recent competitors not only saw the revival production of Fences on Broadway starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis\, but also met the actors in an after-play “talkback” session and workshop. Point Park University awards both the Pittsburgh and national finalists scholarships of $20\,000\, $15\,000 and $10\,000. \nTwo years ago Hope Academy student\, Lawrence White\, won the Pittsburgh regional contest. \nPlease join us to cheer on Laela Lumsden\, Candace Burgess and all of the young people in the contest this year.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:The ELPC Chancel Choir will present Franz Joseph Haydn’s Little Organ Mass during our Sanctuary worship service. Haydn composed this mass in the 1770s in Eisenstadt\, Germany. Accompanying the choir will be a quartet of strings and organ\, led by violinist Andrew Fouts from Pittsburgh’s own Chatham Baroque. \nFranz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) was appointed Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court in 1766\, following the death of Gregor Werner. Following the death of the Eisenstadt castle organist Franz Novotny in 1773\, Haydn took on the duties of organist as well. Two of the masses that Haydn composed in the period following this appointment have since been given the nicknames of “Kleine Orgelmesse” and “Grosse Orgelmesse\,” or the little and the big organ masses. These names have become attached to the masses because of their use of the organ in an obbligato manner as well as a continuo instrument. Haydn’s contract from 1761 stated that he was not permitted to accept outside commissions without the approval of Prince Nicolaus. However\, with respect to church music\, Haydn was evidently allowed more freedom to wander from the realm of the court. The Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae  (“Great Organ Mass”) was written for the court\, but the “Little Organ Mass\,” the Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo\, was not. Haydn’s fourteen masses are among the most popular pieces of their type in all of choral literature. \nThe Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo (Kleine Orgelmesse)\, Hob. XXII: 7 was written for the Order of the Brothers of Mercy (Barmherzige Brüder)\, whose patron saint was Saint John of God (Joannis Cuidad\, 1495-1565). This order\, which had a convent in Eisenstadt\, was held in great favor by Haydn. The mass was composed sometime in the mid-1770s and was presumably first performed in the chapel of Barmherzigen Brüder. The title Little Organ Mass is due to the use of the organ in a solo role in the Benedictus movement. Haydn played the organ part for the first performance. \nThe Gloria and Credo movements are much shorter in length in the Little Organ Mass than in other mass settings. This compression is achieved through the telescoping of the text. That is\, each voice has its own line of text\, so there are four voices singing different texts at the same time! \n  \n\n  \nThis service is held in the sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff.
