SUMMARY:HAT Co Field Trip and Performance - Bob Moses Lecture at CMU
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy’s teen theater company (HAT Co) will be attending a lecture by Bob Moses and performing the song “Up to the Mountain.” This event is free and open to the public. \nAn Evening with Bob Moses\, Civil Rights Legend and Education Activist\nin Collaboration with “SocialChange101.org\,” organizer\, Nico Slate\, Associate Professor of History \nA central figure in SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee)\, Moses spent years fighting racial inequality in Mississippi. In the early 1980s\, he founded the Algebra Project\, a nonprofit organization that uses uses mathematics as an organizing tool to ensure quality public school education for every child in America. \nAbout the Speaker\, Dr. Robert P. Moses\, President and Founder of The Algebra Project\, Inc.\n \nDr. Moses received his BA from Hamilton College (1956)\, and his MA in Philosophy from Harvard University (1957). Moses was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement as a field secretary for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1961\, Moses initiated SNCC’s Mississippi Voter Registration Project\, and was appointed its director in 1962. He helped to lead the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) into the Mississippi Summer Project (1964 Freedom Summer)\, which parachuted the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) to the National Democratic Convention in Atlantic City. He received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1982-87)\, and subsequently started the Algebra Project\, which uses mathematics as an organizing tool for a Quality Education as a Constitutional Right (QECR) for all students. With support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) since 2002\, the AP has been working with cohorts of high school students who previously performed in the lowest quartile on standardized exams. This work has led AP to propose a math high school “benchmark” for bottom quartile students: that they graduate high school on time\, in four years\, ready to do college math for college credit.  To this end\, the Algebra Project is exploring collaborations around a concept of “Math Cohort High Schools.”  Moses is co-author of Radical Equations—Civil Rights from Mississippi to the Algebra Project (Beacon\, 2001) and co-editor of Quality Education as a Constitutional Right-creating a grassroots movement to transform public schools (Beacon Press\, 2010). In 2011-2012\, Moses was the Distinguished Visitor for the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University\, and has been a visiting lecturer at NYU School of Law during the fall semesters\, 2012\, 2013\, and 2014. Dr. Moses is Founder and President of the Algebra Project\, Inc. \nSee more at: http://www.facebook.com/TheAlgebraProject and http://www.algebra.org

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:This week\, we will receive the Peace & Global Witness Offering (formerly the Peacemaking Offering) and dedicate our Peace Pole. \nThis service is held in the sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP SERVICES HERE.

SUMMARY:Solitary Confinement Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for dinner and discussion on the topic\, Solitary Confinement: The Immoral Treatment of Prisoners in America’s Prison System\, with the Rev. Ron Stief and Shandre Delaney. The event is being sponsored by the ELPC Mission Board and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. \nThe United States accounts for 5% of the world’s population\, 25% of the world’s incarcerated\, and holds more prisoners in solitary confinement than any other democratic nation. There are over 40 state-run\, super-max prisons\, and one federal super-max prison in the Unite States—each of which holds inmates exclusively in solitary confinement. In the early 1980s\, there was one. Some argue that the use of solitary confinement is a necessary management tool used for only the “worst of the worst.” However\, the reality is most prisoners end up in solitary confinement\, or are unable to move out of isolation due to non-violent rule infractions and as a result of mental illness. \n\nThe Rev. Ron Stief\, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ\, is the executive director of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture\, an interfaith organization of more than 325 religious organizations committed to ending U.S.–sponsored torture. Rev. Stief is a national leader and faith strategist on ending torture. He speaks widely at college campuses\, interfaith events\, and coalition actions to end torture.\nShandre Delaney—the mother of Carrington Keys\, one of the Dallas 6—is coordinator of the Justice for the Dallas 6 Support Campaign\, which has grown into a national and international effort. She has been an advocate for human and civil rights for 15 years\, working with the Human Rights Coalition and Abolitionist Law Center in Pittsburgh and Global Women’s Strike in Philadelphia\, which are very involved in the Dallas 6 support campaign.\n\n

SUMMARY:Meet the Music Teaching Artists Open House
DESCRIPTION:Meet the music teachers at Hope Academy of Music and the Arts to find out more about private voice and instrument lessons for your child. You may also register and schedule your lessons. \nChildren love music and movement; it’s natural – almost instinctual – for them to sing\, clap\, make rhythms\, and move. But how early should they get started in more formal classes and lessons? What instrument should they play? How do you know if they are ready? How long of a lesson should they take and often should they practice? To help answer these questions\, teaching artists from Hope Academy of Music and the Arts will be available to meet your child and let them listen to and touch various instruments.
