SUMMARY:Memorial Day Retreat for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Do you pray for peace? Let us come together to honor all of the victims of war by praying as one for peace\, because praying for peace is a means of making peace\, and wherever two or more are gathered\, we are assured that God will be with us. \nAll are invited to join us for an opportunity to honor those who have died in war by living in peace. Experience silence in community with shared prayer\, guided reflections\, ritual and worship at Providence Villa Retreat Center in the North Hills. \nThe fee for three nights is $250\, which includes dinner on Friday\, three meals on Saturday and Sunday\, and brunch on Monday. Scholarships are available. Contact the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan with questions. Registration forms are available on the Spiritual Life bulletin board or by clicking here. \n“We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.”—The Dalai Lama \n“Meditation (Centering Prayer\, Contemplative Practice) is a means for each of us to make a powerful\, personal contribution to the collective peace and coherence\, strengthening life in the way that’s needed most—from within.”—Huffington Post

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:ELPC is proud to welcome our guest preacher\, the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Hinson-Hasty. Dr. Hinson-Hasty is active in the PC(USA) denomination and is the chair of theology at Bellarmine University in Louisville\, Kentucky. She also is the author of many books and articles\, including texts on Dorothy Day\, Christian Social Justice\, and the Problem of Wealth. \nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship
DESCRIPTION:This week\, special guest music will be provided by Mike Tomaro and his jazz combo. The Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach.

Five family members fled outside after being awoken at 4 am by the piercing sound of smoke alarms\, but three others – sisters\, Joyce and Judy Reese and a baby in their care – were trapped inside. Firefighters arrived within minutes of the 911 call and rescued Joyce and the 10-month-old boy from the porch roof; Judy was in cardiac arrest when firefighters found her on the second floor of their home. The family lost everything in the fire. \nThe Reese Family\nSisters Joyce and Melanee Reese\, with two sons of their own\, decided a little over 20 years ago to help kids in need after learning how few black families there were in the foster care system. On Oct. 27\, 1994\, 2-day-old Clarisa arrived and then\, a month and a half later\, 3-month-old Christopher. Soon after that came Christopher’s older sister\, Jessica\, who was 2 at the time; and then Clarisa’s younger brother\, Donald\, who was 3 months old. Joyce and Melanee adopted these children and then four years later\, 3-month-old Henderson arrived. When his little sister\, Taylor\, was born six years later\, they once again took the baby in\, to keep the siblings together. \nIn all\, the Reese sisters are raising six children from three sibling sets. Each of them came to the women with medical problems and special needs. “Somebody had to do it. They needed somebody to care\, and we had enough to give\,” Joyce explains. The sisters raised all the children the same way: Be polite\, do your schoolwork\, don’t be disruptive and be good citizens. “We tried to give the kids a very well-rounded life experience\,” Melanee said. All of the Reese children have participated in Hope Academy of Music and the Arts\, taking piano\, violin\, ballet and acting. They take part in ELPC’s Club 116\, and the Food for Thought mentoring program; and are also active in tennis\, swimming and other sports. \n\nTHANKS TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY DONATED TO THE REESE FAMILY FIRE RECOVERY BINGO!\n This list will be updated as donations for Bingo prizes are confirmed. SUMMARY:Faith 101 - Bible: A Book Like No Other
DESCRIPTION:Is it crazy for me to hope that through years of rereading this Bible I might one day get to see a bluer sky? Led by Paul Seif. \n\nThis is a Faith 101 Class.\nDid you miss that day in Sunday School? There is much to know about Christianity’s origins and purpose. Much of this knowledge some folks learned in Sunday School as a child and some never did. Now that you are an adult\, you are invited to examine some of the fundamentals of Christianity through grown-up eyes. All adults are invited to these weekly Lenten classes when we will examine the fundamentals of faith using a 6-part study series. All sessions are stand alone\, so choose the one or more that you wish to explore. Childcare available in the nursery and Fair Trade PLUS Café Justo will be served at all sessions. School’s in!!
