SUMMARY:HAT Co Dance Ensemble Field Trip: Anthony Williams' Dress/Tech
DESCRIPTION:HAT Co’s core dancers have an opportunity to observe a dress/tech rehearsal for Anthony Williams’ performance of Loving Black. The rehearsal will take place a few blocks away at the Alloy Studios on Penn Avenue. We will go to the rehearsal instead of dance class that evening (Thursday\, Oct 16). Pick up will be at the Alloy Studios at 8 pm. Here is information about the performance. \nHope Academy teaching artist\, Anthony Williams\, presents Loving Black\, as part of the Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s Fresh Works series.  This new dance performance is about the complicated love between African American men. The project examines past and present representations of black male identities to inspire a dialogue about the diversity of expressions. \nLoving Black is a personal work created by Anthony Williams. It is about identity\, race and sexuality; and it does include content suitable for more mature audiences. This description should help parents/guardians decide if their teen should attend the rehearsal and/or performance: \nIn this work\, four men explore intimacy\, sensitivity\, and colorism as they move through the process of redefining their projected identities. The piece begins with historic references to the Willie Lynch letter as well as an excerpt from Malcolm X’s “You Can’t Hate The Roots of A Tree” speech.  Another excerpt\, from Mark Gonzales’ “As With Most Men\,” a spoken word piece about the fear of male intimacy\, uses the F-word. The dancers change costumes onstage\, so there is some partial\, but not genital\, nudity. Projected images are used throughout the piece to illustrate the derogatory way our culture describes and defines masculinity. \nLanguage – Mild to moderate use of profanity\nSexual Content – Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior\, possibly including partial nudity\nSexual Themes – References to sex or sexuality\nSuggestive Themes – Mild provocative references or materials\nViolent References – References to violent acts \nAbout Anthony Williams:\nAnthony Williams is a resident teaching artist at Kelly Strayhorn Theater who recently presented his work Identity at KST’s newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival 2013. He has performed with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre\, August Wilson Center Dance Ensemble\, Texture Contemporary Ballet\, and Ballet Chicago. SUMMARY:HAT Co Field Trip: Macbeth @ PICT
DESCRIPTION:HAT Co ensemble members are invited to see Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre’s “Macbeth” (the focus of our Shakespeare studies last year). Check out PICT’s website for short\, informative video clips by director\, Alan Stanford\, about the play. \n“Something wicked this way comes\,” says one witch as Macbeth approaches. As Macbeth’s ambition grows\, fueled by the prophecies of the three witches\, he and his Lady begin a campaign of devastation and death to secure the throne of Scotland. How far will they go to satisfy the blossoming wickedness in their hearts? Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy will leave you breathless. If you enjoy Game of Thrones\, Macbeth will thrill you. \nThe play runs 2 hrs\, with a 15 minute intermission. There is a talk-back discussion and Q&A session after that you should all stay for. \nThanks to Tickets for Kids and Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre for giving us this great opportunity to see “Macbeth.”

SUMMARY:"As You Like It": Shakespeare in the Parks
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy teaching artist\, Tonya Lynn (Musical Theater Workshop Acting & Shakespeare Coaching)\, is playing Audrey in Shakespeare in the Parks’ performance of “As You Like It.” There are 3 performances this weekend but let’s all try to go to the one on Sunday afternoon. It’s FREE. It’s OUTSIDE. And it will be a BLAST seeing Tonya and all of our other friends from Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks (we’re looking at you\, Adam Rutledge and Andrew Miller!). So bring a blanket and we will see you at Frick Park at 2 pm! \nIf you come early (1 pm) you can see a 45 min kid’s version of the play by Falstaff’s Fellows. \nClick here for more information about all of the performances of “As You Like It\,” and read these lovely director’s notes\, by Lisa Ann Goldsmith\, to get you excited. \nTonya Lynn in “The Tempest”\nDirector’s Notes for “As You Like It”\nSo many people producing Shakespeare plays these days think that there must be an original angle\, or a deep-seated theme\, or an unusual setting\, or something offbeat about the production in order for modern audiences to relate to it. My favorite thing about the Bard’s work has always been how incredibly accessible it is! Human feelings have not changed in 400 years\, and Shakespeare’s characters are as human as you get. “Love is merely a madness\,” says Rosalind. And indeed\, that has not changed throughout history either. The mad interplay between the sexes is as old as the Earth\, and is seldom displayed as beautifully and hilariously as in “As You Like It.” We get it—every relationship in the play is familiar to us\, even when they don’t make sense. And so if we do understand these people as well as we do\, it seems superfluous to me to gild the lily. This play takes place in the forest of Arden; where better to perform it than in the beautiful parks where we live? As Duke Senior so wisely observes\, being within nature does indeed help us “finde tongues in trees\, bookes in the running brookes\, sermons in stones\, and good in every thing.” Let the text stand on its own\, in the natural setting where it belongs. It has been a joyful ride for us—we welcome you into our world. Enjoy! \n—Lisa Ann Goldsmith\, Director
