SUMMARY:HAT Co Band at Three Rivers Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Fortunates\, from Hope Academy of Music and the Arts\, make and perform music that falls somewhere on the spectrum between R&B\, pop\, funk\, soul and jazz. Some might call it genre-less; they call it just being themselves. Lead singer\, Laela Lumsden brings melodic rap to “Hear Me\,” a song she wrote for the WYEP Reimagination contest. It is a song that challenges us to pay attention and listen to what is happening in her community and in our world–a song that encourages young people to speak out because\, “if I don’t say it\, the truth’s gonna die out.” \nThe instrumentalists\, Henry Schultz (keyboard)\, James Jaap (bass) and Desmond Rucker (drums) have known each other since their elementary school days at Dilworth. The newest and youngest band member\, Tomi Olaore (saxophone)\, also went to Dilworth and now all four attend Pittsburgh CAPA. The singers\, Laela Lumsden\, Kira Mukogosi\, Kyra Simmons and Raffaella Carattino attend North Gate\, CAPA\, PA Cyberschool and Colfax. As a group\, their diversity is one of their greatest strengths and their name\, The Fortunates\, embodies their spirit of being grateful for the opportunity to make music together. \nThe Fortunates are part of a larger teen theater company (HAT Co) at Hope Academy\, where they also study dance and theater. This multidisciplinary approach informs their work as musicians\, singers and songwriters. They are under the musical direction of Emma Cox (guitar and bass)\, and Ben Barson (saxophone). \nHope Academy of Music and the Arts is an after school performing arts education outreach program of East Liberty Presbyterian Church. \nHAT Co (Hope Academy Theater Company) is an audition-only company that provides a more intensive\, ensemble- and performance-based experience for students in grades 6 through 12 who are interested in the performing arts. HAT Co members are encouraged to make their own work\, as they learn to think about and respect dance\, theater and music as art forms – and themselves as artists and creators. \nThis program is uniquely suited for teens who are motivated to study and perform across a range of disciplines; and who have an interest in being part of an inclusive\, supportive\, non-competitive group. Ensemble members receive individual\, class and ensemble training in acting\, singing\, dance and instrumental music. Selected students rehearse and perform as part of a theater ensemble; two other select groups rehearse and perform as part of rock bands. \nThe theater ensemble participates in the Pittsburgh Public Theater Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest and the August Wilson Monologue Contest; and each year they present a showcase performance. \nHAT Co has performed at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater\, The Warhol Museum\, CAPA’s Battle of the Bands\, The Summit Against Racism\, WYEP’s Summer Music Festival and Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. \nHAT Co alumni recently recorded “All I Want for Christmas (Is My Baby)” with Steven Foxbury from Yellow Couch Studio. They performed this song\, which won the first Reimagination contest in 2012\, with their artist-mentors Emma Cox and Lauren Shapiro (from the band The Color Fleet) for WYEP’s 2012 Holiday Hootenanny. The alumni reunion performance of the song landed them a spot on Pittsburgh Today Live last December. The song can be found on their bandcamp page. \nThis year’s WYEP Reimagination song\, “Hear Me\,” was written by Laela Lumsden\, who is the lead singer on the song. Laela is a three-time finalist in the Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest and last year won first place for her scene. This year she won 2nd place in Pittsburgh’s August Wilson Monologue Contest and will be competing in the national finals in New York City on May 1\, 2017. \nMembers of the band include Henry Schultz – Keyboard\, James Jaap – Bass\, Desmond Rucker – Drums\, Tomi Olaore – Saxophone\, Laela Lumsden – Singer/Songwriter\, Kira Mukogosi – Singer\, Kyra Simmons – Singer\, and Raffaella Carattino – Singer.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Pittsburgh - JUST SUMMER Concert - Miller-Porfiris Duo: Violin + Viola + Silent Films
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a JUST SUMMER concert featuring Miller-Porfiris Duo on Violin + Viola playing live to classic silent films\, from the Great Train Robbery to Charlie Chaplin. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then  RSVP here by June 13.\nPraised by critics for their “expressive grace and finesse” and playing that is “vibrant and focused\,” the Miller-Porfiris Duo has been delighting audiences since 2005. Anton Miller\, violin and Rita Porfiris\, viola first met over 20 years ago while studying at the Juilliard School. The duo has given concerts and masterclasses at festivals and institutions across the United States\, Central America\, and Europe; recent residencies and masterclasses have seen them at Duke University\, Kutztown University\, the Foulger Festival\, PointCounterpoint\, the Iceland Arts Academy\, the Chamber Society of Little Rock\, Sheldon Friends of Chamber Music\, Music on the Hill Rhode Island\, and the St. George International Festival. \nCommitted to expanding the repertoire for violin and viola\, in 2010 they commissioned and recorded 3 new works for violin and viola by Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen\, Argentinean composer Mario Diaz Gavier\, and American composer Libby Larsen for their debut CD “Five Postcards.” Their second CD\, titled “Eight Pieces” (music of Bruch and Gliere)\, released in 2013\, was deemed a “fine new recording” and praised for its “wonderfully smooth ensemble work” by Gramophone and Audible Audiophile magazines. Rita also received accolades for her transcription for violin and viola of Reinhold Gliere’s Eight Pieces Op. 39. Their third CD\, “Divertimenti\,” was released in early 2016 and has already received airplay on radio stations across the country. Highlights of recent seasons included sold-out performances of the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante\, Bruch Double Concerto with Lincoln’s Symphony and a performance of the rarely performed Arthur Benjamin Romantic Fantasy for Violin and Viola with the Concert Artists of Baltimore. \nHere is a video of  Miller-Porfinis playing along with a clip from The Great Train Robbery. \n \n\nHow to be a good audience member\nIt is important that audience members remain quiet during the performance. Since music is mostly a listening activity\, any extra sounds that are not part of the music can get in the way and will distract and disturb the musicians and other audience members. \nBefore the Concert \n\nJUST SUMMER performances at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater are more casual and relaxed than concerts we’ve been attending at Carnegie Music Hall\, so there isn’t a dress code. Just don’t wear anything that will be distracting (light up shoes\, clanging jewelry\, etc)\nArrive no later than 7:00 pm to get your tickets. There is a mixer that starts at 6:30 pm\, with snacks from The Livermore\, so you are welcome to come early if you would like.\n\nBefore You Take Your Seat \n\nTake care of all rest room needs.\nLeave all food\, drink\, and gum outside\, in the lobby.\nLeave all cameras and recording devices outside\, as well. There are strict copyright guidelines about recording concerts.\nTurn off all cell phones\, pagers\, ipads\, watch sounds\, alarms\, or anything that might make a noise. The only sounds that should be heard are the ones that appear in the musical score (and the audience reaction after the music).\n\nOnce You Take Your Seat \n\nA parent or guardian must sit next to each child.\nRemain seated and quiet while the musicians are playing. Do not get up during the concert or change seats.\nNo talking\, whispering\, sighing\, tapping or kicking feet\, or rattling of programs or papers.\nBe sure to sit without fidgeting so you don’t distract your neighbors or the performers on stage.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Pittsburgh - JUST SUMMER Concert - Roomful of Teeth
DESCRIPTION:Hope Academy families are invited to a JUST SUMMER concert featuring Grammy-award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth\, who perform a program of globally diverse music that explores the expressive potential of the human voice. Tickets have been generously donated to us by our partner\, Chamber Music Pittsburgh. This performance is recommended for students whose attention span and behavior is equivalent to an 8 year old. \nPlease read about the performance\, so that you know what to expect; and the etiquette guidelines\, so that you understand the expectations; then  RSVP here.\nRoomful of Teeth is a GRAMMY-winning vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from singing traditions the world over\, the eight-voice ensemble continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and\, through an ongoing commissioning process\, forges a new repertoire without borders.   \nFounded in 2009 by Brad Wells\, the group gathers annually at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams\, Massachusetts\, where they’ve studied Tuvan throat singing\, yodeling\, belting\, Inuit throat singing\, Korean P’ansori\, Georgian singing\, Sardinian cantu a tenore\, Hindustani music and Persian classical singing with some of the world’s top performers and teachers. Commissioned composers include Rinde Eckert\, Judd Greenstein\, Caleb Burhans\, Merrill Garbus (of tUnE-yArDs)\, William Brittelle\, Anna Clyne\, Fred Hersch\, Wally Gunn\, Sarah Kirkland Snider\, Missy Mazzoli\, Michael Harrison\, Sam Amidon\, and Ted Hearne. \nProjects in 2015-2016 included The Colorado\, a music-driven documentary film that explores water\, land and survival in the Colorado River Basin (featuring former Kronos Quartet cellist Jeffrey Zeigler and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche); collaborations with NOW Ensemble\, Kanye West and the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME); performances with the Seattle Symphony featuring Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia\, appearances at new music festivals in the US\, Mexico and Canada; and partnerships with over a dozen higher education institutions across the country. \nHere is a video of Roomful of Teeth to give you an idea about what to expect.
