SUMMARY:Gratitude Retreat
DESCRIPTION:As we approach Thanksgiving\, look towards Advent\, and ponder the end of 2023\, it is a great time to take a weekend in community with others and slow down\, reflect\, pause\, pray\, and “forget not all of God’s benefits.” Join us for a Gratitude Retreat at the Villa Maria Retreat Center in Pulaski\, Pennsylvania\, Friday–Sunday\, November 17–19. \nThe retreat will flow in the simple rhythm of Stop… Look… Go…  We will gather in prayer & reflection and then scatter for time alone and quiet\, in the morning\, at noon\, and in the evening. Friday night\, we will STOP\, get quiet\, be still\, and build stop signs in our lives. On Saturday\, we will LOOK\, listen\, smell\, taste\, and hear the richness\, notice the connections\, drink in the beauty\, smell the goodness\, and savor what is being graciously given to us in this moment or season of our life. Then on Sunday\, we will GO! We will ponder what gratitude practices we want to incorporate into our lives so we may stay awake to God’s goodness in our everyday\, ordinary lives. \nRSVP to Norma Meyer at 412.441.3800 x211 by Sunday\, November 5. \nCost Options: \n\nFriday–Saturday | Shared Bath @ $70\nFriday–Saturday | Private Bath @ $110\nFriday–Sunday | Shared Bath @ $85\nFriday–Sunday | Private Bath @ $135\n\n

SUMMARY:Decolonizing our Spiritual Practices
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 4\, 9 am–3pm\, at ELPC or on Zoom for a day of teaching\, conversation\, and spiritual practice\, as we seek to continue in our journey to be a Matthew 25 church and decolonize our spiritual practices. \nWe will be led by Leeann Shaw Younger. Under her leadership\, we will look at the world and the story of Jesus through the eyes of those impacted by the work of colonial missionaries here in the U.S. and around the world. We will deepen our relationship with the Divine by considering how we might begin to unlearn the spiritual practices we’ve inherited that ignore and even denigrate the way indigenous cultures see the world and the Divine. We will consider what we can learn about the story of Jesus through the eyes of those finding a story of liberation and healing for both our human and other-than-human relatives. \nRSVP to Norma Meyer at 412.441.3800 x111 by Sunday\, May 29. The suggested donation is $10 (lunch included). \nJoin us at ELPC in the McKelvy Room or online by clicking the button below. Enter meeting ID 835 6152 8224 and passcode 579308 if prompted. \nJoin Via Zoom \n\nAbout Our Facilitator\nLeeann Shaw Younger is the lead pastor of Cityview Church in Pittsburgh’s East Deutschtown/Spring Garden neighborhood. She co-founded the Evangelical Covenant Church congregation in 2010 with her husband\, Wayne. Leeann has a breadth of vocational experiences in her background as a nonprofit executive leader\, campus minster\, and pastor\, but most recently has enjoyed her role as a Democratic committeewoman. She is in the process of completing a Master of Theological Studies\, with a focus on decolonizing church practice from the Pacific School of Religion.

SUMMARY:NO Contemplative Prayer
DESCRIPTION:There will be no Contemplative Prayer on Monday\, December 27\, as we take a break over Christmas. Our regular schedule will resume next Monday\, January 3. \n\nContemplation has been described as a long-loving look at the real. Contemplation is about waking up\, listening\, noticing\, and paying attention. In the words of Adele Calhoun\, “A contemplative person recognizes that every experience offers more than meets the eye. They know that ‘bidden or unbidden’ God is present.” \nThis takes practice. \nJoin the Rev. BJ Woodworth for a time to practice a variety of contemplative prayer practices\, utilizing fixed prayers\, scripture\, music\, silence\, art\, and our bodies to help us start our day in communion with God and one another. \nClick the button below at the scheduled time to join via Zoom or call in by dialing 312.626.6799 and entering meeting ID\, 959 8065 3992. \n\nPasscode: bestill\n\nDial-in Passcode: 6787603\nJOIN VIA ZOOM

SUMMARY:Contemplative Activism Retreat with Cole Arthur Riley
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Life Committee is excited to bring in Cole Arthur Riley to lead a retreat on Contemplative Activism. Join us we learn how to adopt spiritual practices that suspend between the contemplative and pursuit of justice. In our activism\, spiritual contemplation can feel more like a precursor to the work of justice\, instead of a core part of it. Together\, we will explore the gift of a contemplative spirituality that is marked by liberating habits of storytelling\, emotion\, and embodiment. \nClick to Register \nRetreat Details\nThe cost is $50 (scholarships are available). Please register by Friday\, June 4. Like our previous online retreats\, we will gather via Zoom at scheduled times. Cole will speak and guide us in prayer\, a reflection\, and an embodied activity during each of these sessions\, as well as give suggestions and prompts for our own solitude and contemplation in between each session. Our themes will be as follows: \n\nFriday\, 6 pm | The Liberation of the Self\nExploring how insight into our interior lives can be an active justice practice\, as we talk about selfhood\, story\, and memory.\nSaturday\, 9 am | Liberating Emotion\nExamining how emotional truth-telling informs contemplation and activism—specifically emotions such as lament and anger.\nSaturday\, 1 pm | Contemplation & The Body\nDiscussing how contemplative habits can and should guide us into deeper connections with our bodies\, including the cost of justice-work on our bodies\, and contemplation as a healing force.\nSaturday\, 5 pm | Closing Prayer Service\nGathering in the graces and sharing our intentions.\n\n \n\nAbout Cole Arthur Riley\nCole Arthur Riley is a writer\, liturgist\, and speaker who is seeking a deeply contemplative life marked by embodiment and emotion. She is the founder and writer of Black Liturgies—a project seeking to integrate concepts of dignity\, lament\, rage\, justice\, rest\, and liberation with the practice of written prayer. She also serves as the content and spiritual formation manager for Chesterton House\, a Christian studies center at Cornell University.

SUMMARY:Virtual Advent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Life Committee invites you to a virtual retreat for Advent\, themed Wait Upon the Lord. \nThe retreat will take place Friday–Saturday\, November 20–21. The cost is $25. All supplies will be sent to you in advance. \nPlease RSVP by Friday\, November 6\, with Norma Meyer. Contact the Rev. BJ Woodworth with questions. \n\nWhy Retreat? Amidst all that is happening and will be happening in mid-November\, why would one go on a 24-hour retreat. Let me offer one metaphor from Ruth Haley Barton’s book\, Invitation to Retreat: \n“Going on retreat is like a boat entering into the lock in order to rise to new heights. When I don’t enter into the locks at regular intervals my life will just keep sinking to the level of the culture around me and to the level of my own unexamined inner world. However\, when I entered the lock\, that is retreat\, when I allow the doors to close behind me and wait quietly for my soul to be lifted by the presence of God\, I find that almost imperceptibly I am buoyed to new levels. When I emerge\, I may not be able to say exactly what happened\, but I know that I have been lifted to new heights and my sails are straight and ready to catch the wind of the Spirit as it fills my sails.” \nPerhaps what we all need after nine months of a pandemic\, continued racial injustice\, and increasing political division and unrest is to take 24 hours to pull into the locks\, rest\, be still\, attend to our breath\, grieve\, lament\, light a candle\, and find our strength in quietness and trust for the continued journey. \nSecondly\, a retreat at this time helps us prepare for Advent\, a season in which we remind ourselves and get in touch with our longings and desires for the coming of God’s kingdom in fullness. It is a season about imagining and seeing what God’s dream is for us and the world. What are you longing\, waiting\, and hoping for this Advent? A retreat creates space to ponder and prepare our lives for the new thing God may want to birth in and through you.
