SUMMARY:Consciousness\, Creative Expression\, and Physical Morphology
DESCRIPTION:Sound and Spirituality: Exploring Traditions\nAs we continue exploring the role sound plays in our spirituality\, the Spiritual Life Committee is offering two interfaith programs in March that focus on sound and its use in worship and prayer. Both programs follow Sanctuary worship and feature a light lunch. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or musical ability is needed. \nIn our first program on Sun.\, March 4\, Michael Dodin will share insights and research into the special nature of sound as it relates to consciousness\, creative expression\, and physical morphology. You also will have an opportunity to share in musical meditations/prayers using the Names of God in the vibrations of the original biblical languages. \nAlso\, make plans to join us for our second program\, Kirtan with Ashely O’Hara. \n\nAbout our presenter\nMichael Dodin currently works with the Academy for Future Science (a U.N. Non-Governmental Organization) as director of multimedia\, musician\, audio engineer\, and U.N. youth delegate. He studied Western classical music and composition on a variety of instruments\, as well as classical Indian music and percussion on the Tabla. In 2015\, he performed at the Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City. Michael’s musical compositions were featured in The Power of One Voice—a documentary by Mark Dixon\, which details the life and work of environmental scientist Rachel Carson (also the author of the book Silent Spring).

SUMMARY:Faith\, Science\, and Our Spiritual Life
DESCRIPTION:What do the Universe and God have in common? If evolution is true\, does that leave room for God? If I believe in God does that mean I have to deny physics? Got questions? So do we! \nJoin us as we discuss the intersection between the science of our universe and our understanding of the Divine\, led by the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan. We read\, watch videos\, and try to make meaning of this precious moment which we share. You are welcome whether or not you have read\, studied\, or asked these questions before. Come join the conversation!

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:This week’s Qi Gong and Mindfulness Meditation session is cancelled. We will return to our normal schedule next Thursday at 7 pm. \n\nJoin us and Susan Spangler as we learn more about Mindfulness Meditation and engage in this ancient prayer form together. We begin with Qi Gong and move into meditation instruction\, guided meditations\, and practices for supporting mindfulness in everyday life. \nMindfulness is the moment-to-moment awareness of our experience with an accepting\, non-judgmental\, kind attention. In this ongoing practice\, we’ll explore and deepen our experience of mindfulness. Our weekly time together will include meditation instruction\, guided meditations\, and practices for supporting mindfulness in everyday life. \nBoth those who are new to meditation and those with meditation experience are heartily welcome.

SUMMARY:Misguided Angels: The Role of the Nervous System in Spiritual Growth
DESCRIPTION:Misguided Angels: Term 2\nFrom conception\, our brains develop from the bottom up: brain stem\, limbic system\, and then cortex. The nervous system is the first to develop\, with the primary responsibility of protecting us from danger. It operates through approach or avoid—going toward what nurtures us and away from what threatens us. From a young age\, we perceived our caregivers as doing both. Our personality becomes hardwired into our nervous system as a survival strategy\, setting patterns of thinking\, feeling\, and behavior. While they served us well in childhood\, these patterns limit us in adulthood. \nLearn about your individual patterns using the Enneagram as a map\, and how to work with the nervous system to expand your capacity for spiritual growth. \nThose who have completed Term 1 are welcome to join us for Term 2 on Mondays\, March 13–April 10\, from 6:30–9 pm. Since his death\, many books have been published as compilations of\, or based upon\, the volumes of journals that he left behind. \nJoin us as ELPC member Dr. Brent House explores with us this practice of spiritual journaling and memoir writing as a way to draw nearer to ourselves and to God. \nA light lunch will be served. \nDr. House is a professor of Creative Writing at California University of Pennsylvania. \nAbout Thomas Merton\nThomas Merton was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk\, he was a poet\, social activist\, and pioneer of Interfaith Dialogue. Merton wrote more than 70 books—mostly on spirituality\, social justice\, and a quiet pacifism—as well as essays\, reviews\, and voluminous journals. Among Merton’s most enduring works is his best-selling\, spiritual autobiography\, The Seven Storey Mountain (1948)\, which appears on National Review’s list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th century. He has been an inspiration to millions.

SUMMARY:Silent Retreat at Martina Spiritual Renewal Center
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to come away for a time of silence\, peace and restoration. Retreats are a mainstay of the Christian Spiritual Life. Taking time apart to slow down\, listen deeply\, reflect\, and savor the presence of the divine is essential to maturing spiritually. While there is generally little or no talking during a silent retreat\, it is about more than just not talking. It is about trying to also allow your thoughts and body to become quiet so that you might become more aware of the presence of the living God within and all around you. If you have never experienced a silent retreat\, this weekend is an ideal opportunity to give it a try. \nThe retreat begins over dinner with conversation at 6 pm\, on Friday\, April 8\, followed by a compline service during which we enter silence. Throughout the silence on Saturday\, there will be times to gather and be together in prayer in the Chapel. Each participant also will have an opportunity to sign up for a meeting with a spiritual director during the weekend. Silence will be broken during Sunday morning worship\, followed by conversation over brunch. \nThe cost is $150\, which includes two nights accommodations; dinner Friday night; breakfast\, lunch and dinner on Saturday; brunch on Sunday and a spiritual direction appointment. Scholarship money is available. Click here to download the registration form or stop by the Spiritual Life Committee Bulletin Board. \nThe Martina Spiritual Renewal Center is conveniently located 20 minutes from ELPC and has beautiful grounds with walking paths. Each retreatant will have a private room with shared restroom and showers.
