SUMMARY:Misguided Angels: The Role of the Nervous System in Spiritual Growth
DESCRIPTION:Misguided Angels: Term 2\nFrom conception\, our brains develop from the bottom up: brain stem\, limbic system\, and then cortex. The nervous system is the first to develop\, with the primary responsibility of protecting us from danger. It operates through approach or avoid—going toward what nurtures us and away from what threatens us. From a young age\, we perceived our caregivers as doing both. Our personality becomes hardwired into our nervous system as a survival strategy\, setting patterns of thinking\, feeling\, and behavior. While they served us well in childhood\, these patterns limit us in adulthood. \nLearn about your individual patterns using the Enneagram as a map\, and how to work with the nervous system to expand your capacity for spiritual growth. \nThose who have completed Term 1 are welcome to join us for Term 2 on Mondays\, March 13–April 10\, from 6:30–9 pm. We will continue our learning\, but will add an experiential element to the academic teaching. (suggested donation is $50) \nClick here to download a registration form. \nABOUT OUR INSTRUCTOR AND GUIDE\, KERRY O’DONNELL\nKerry O’Donnell has 25 years of experience working for the United States Institute of Peace\, Council for International Exchange of Scholars\, and American University. She has taught classes on interpersonal conflicts at Carnegie Mellon University’s Osher Institute\, and workshops for businesses and nonprofit organizations. Kerry also founded and directed a community victim-offender dialogue program in Washington D.C.\, and received the Jefferson Award for public service as a mediator for the Pennsylvania Office of Victim Advocate—facilitating dialogues between violent crime victims and offenders. \nKerry holds a Masters degree in Education\, is trained in Traumatic Stress Studies\, and is certified in Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine) through the Trauma Institute. She also is a certified Conflict Management Coach\, Enneagram Teacher and Coach\, Mediator\, and Senior Certified Professional in Human Resource Management. \nIn her free time\, she enjoys visiting the patients at Children’s Hospital with her miniature horse\, Lucky

SUMMARY:Writing as a Spiritual Practice
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Merton’s first—and one of his most famous—books is his spiritual autobiography\, The Seven Storey Mountain. Since his death\, many books have been published as compilations of\, or based upon\, the volumes of journals that he left behind. \nJoin us as ELPC member Dr. Brent House explores with us this practice of spiritual journaling and memoir writing as a way to draw nearer to ourselves and to God. \nA light lunch will be served. \nDr. House is a professor of Creative Writing at California University of Pennsylvania. \nAbout Thomas Merton\nThomas Merton was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk\, he was a poet\, social activist\, and pioneer of Interfaith Dialogue. Merton wrote more than 70 books—mostly on spirituality\, social justice\, and a quiet pacifism—as well as essays\, reviews\, and voluminous journals. Among Merton’s most enduring works is his best-selling\, spiritual autobiography\, The Seven Storey Mountain (1948)\, which appears on National Review’s list of the 100 best non-fiction books of the 20th century. He has been an inspiration to millions.

SUMMARY:Silent Retreat at Martina Spiritual Renewal Center
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to come away for a time of silence\, peace and restoration. Retreats are a mainstay of the Christian Spiritual Life. Taking time apart to slow down\, listen deeply\, reflect\, and savor the presence of the divine is essential to maturing spiritually. While there is generally little or no talking during a silent retreat\, it is about more than just not talking. It is about trying to also allow your thoughts and body to become quiet so that you might become more aware of the presence of the living God within and all around you. If you have never experienced a silent retreat\, this weekend is an ideal opportunity to give it a try. \nThe retreat begins over dinner with conversation at 6 pm\, on Friday\, April 8\, followed by a compline service during which we enter silence. Throughout the silence on Saturday\, there will be times to gather and be together in prayer in the Chapel. Each participant also will have an opportunity to sign up for a meeting with a spiritual director during the weekend. Silence will be broken during Sunday morning worship\, followed by conversation over brunch. \nThe cost is $150\, which includes two nights accommodations; dinner Friday night; breakfast\, lunch and dinner on Saturday; brunch on Sunday and a spiritual direction appointment. Scholarship money is available. Click here to download the registration form or stop by the Spiritual Life Committee Bulletin Board. \nThe Martina Spiritual Renewal Center is conveniently located 20 minutes from ELPC and has beautiful grounds with walking paths. Each retreatant will have a private room with shared restroom and showers.

SUMMARY:The God Test
DESCRIPTION:The Spiritual Life Committee invites you to take the God test following Sanctuary worship on Sun.\, Jan. 17\, in Room 234. Lunch will be served. \nDespite the hype surrounding the “New Atheism\,” the United States remains one of the world’s most religious nations. In fact\, as many as 95% of Americans believe in God—a rare consensus in American life. The nation’s greatest rifts are not between atheists and believers\, or between those of different faiths. What divides us is how we conceive God and the role God plays in our lives. \nDrawing on the most comprehensive and illuminating survey of Americans’ religious beliefs ever conducted\, Baylor University professors\, Paul Froese and Christopher Bader\, argue that many of America’s most intractable social and political divisions arise from religious convictions held deeply but rarely discussed. Working with original survey data from thousands of Americans and a wealth of in-depth interviews\, Froese and Bader trace America’s cultural diversity to its ultimate source—differing beliefs about God. They show that regardless of religious tradition (or lack thereof)\, Americans typically worship God in one of four distinct divine expressions\, definitions of God that form the basis of our worldviews and are among the most powerful predictors of our feelings on America’s contentious issues. \nJoin us as the Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan leads us in an exploration of America’s “four Gods.”

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Experience Healing & Wholeness
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. \nGestalt Pastoral Care is rooted in the Christian ministry of healing\, and integrates Gestalt growth work\, spiritual companioning\, and prayer for healing. This work rests on the belief that God’s grace is constantly at work in each person. Although we can’t predict how you will be healed\, you can expect to be touched in body\, mind\, spirit\, emotions\, and social/relational context in a process unique to you. \nBetty F. Voight\, M.Div.\, will be our leader. Betty is an ordained minister in the PC(USA). Her vocation for the past 20 years has been to guide others on their spiritual journeys through individual spiritual companioning\, prayer retreats\, spiritual formation work and inner healing workshops. Betty has been on her own intentional spiritual journey since she was a child with the help of the Church. As an adult\, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary\, Green Bough House of Prayer\, the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation and Gestalt Pastoral Care Associates have provided important teachers along the way.  Her own meditative/contemplative prayer practice keeps her connected to Christ’s light within. Wonderful spiritual directors have given her honest feedback and their deep listening and guidance for the journey.

SUMMARY:Enneagram Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Enneagram is an ancient and mysterious means for better understanding ourselves\, exploring our motivations\, and discovering ways in which we can move toward wholeness. \nDuring Lent\, plan on joining us at the Franciscan Spirit and Life Center in the South Hills\, as Fr. Bernie Tickerhoof leads an Enneagram Retreat\, providing you with an opportunity to discover—in greater depth—who you are and why you do the things you do. It is strongly recommended that participants read the small book\, The Essential Enneagram\, by David Daniels and Virginia Price\, prior to the retreat. The Spiritual Life committee will have copies available by February 6. \nThe cost is $150\, which includes accommodations for two nights\, three meals on Saturday\, and brunch on Sunday. Full and partial scholarships are available. \nClick here to download a registration form.
