SUMMARY:Bicentennial Sunday Worship Service & Reception
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday is the big event! The Sanctuary walls will ring with the sound of brass and timpani\, and echo with the voices of our special Anniversary Choir. Join us for this wonderful time of celebration as ELPC welcomes past staff and friends\, and gives thanks to the God who has led us safe thus far and whose grace leads us into the future. The “Hallelujah Chorus” will be sung for the postlude\, followed by a reception held in the Social Hall after this Bicentennial Sunday Sanctuary worship service. \n  \n\nLearn more about ELPC’s Bicentennial Celebration!\n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence. Like many of the great cathedrals of Europe\, the compelling power and beauty of our historic\, gothic-style Sanctuary enhances the spiritual experience. Children are invited to the chancel steps to hear their own message with one of the pastors. The service is led by ELPC’s senior pastor or other members of the pastoral staff. Special guest pastors or speakers periodically lead the service. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP services HERE.

They draw from a diverse repertoire\, including works originally for piano and orchestra; works original to piano and organ; their own transcriptions; and solo offerings. \nFormed in 2013\, The Arsenal Duo made their debut performance at Youngstown\, Ohio’s historic Stambaugh Auditorium\, where they attracted one of the largest audiences since the restoration of the hall’s E.M. Skinner pipe organ. The duo returned to Stambaugh to record several tracks for a forthcoming recording. They have also been presented at Pittsburgh’s East Liberty Presbyterian Church and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral\, Christ Episcopal Church in Warren\, Ohio\, and National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. \nThe 2015-2016 season had the duo playing concerts in Colorado\, Virginia\, Ohio\, Illinois\, Michigan\, and Pennsylvania. The 2016-2017 season includes concerts in New Canaan\, CT\, Wilson College in Chambersburg\, PA\, Dearborn\, MI\, Tarentum\, PA\, and an invitation to return to Stambaugh Auditorium on July 3\, 2017 as featured performers for the Great Lakes Regional Convention of the American Guild of Organists. \nNathan Carterette \nHailed as “wonderfully poetic\,” (Westfalen Post) and “very compelling in his power and presence” (International Composer)\, Nathan Carterette has distinguished himself in the concert world by performing a huge range of works from Elizabethan keyboard music to music written today. His innovative programming has inspired audiences to approach unfamiliar music with open ears\, and familiar music with new appreciation. \nMr. Carterette has performed in such venues as Weill Recital Hall and the Yamaha Piano Salon of New York City\, the Gasteig in Munich\, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe of Hamburg\, and Cleveland’s Trinity Cathedral. He has been presented in several universities such as the Berklee School of Music\, Cleveland Institute of Music\, Radford University\, Drake University\, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory\, and Carnegie Mellon. \nEducated at Yale University\, where he studied with Boris Berman\, Mr. Carterette began his piano studies at the age of eleven with Cleveland’s legendary Birute and Anthony Smetona. A chance encounter in 2004 with Welsh composer-pianist Dafydd Llywelyn led to an invitation for intensive private study in Germany\, both of the traditional repertoire and Llywelyn’s works. \nEdward Alan Moore \nEdward Alan Moore\, native of Girard\, OH\, is Organist/Music Director at East Liberty Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh\, PA. Previously he was a member of the organ faculty at The Catholic University of America Benjamin T. Rome School of Music in Washington\, DC\, Director of Music Ministries at The Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean\, VA\, and Minister of Music at National City Christian Church in Washington\, DC. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, studying organ with Michael Farris\, improvisation with Gerre Hancock and Richard Erickson\, and serving as research assistant for Professor Wm. A. Little. \nAs a recitalist\, Dr. Moore was the first organist chosen to perform on the Millennium Stage concert series at the Kennedy Center in 2004. Other recitals include those at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York City\, the Cathedral of Saint Philip in Atlanta\, Princeton University Chapel\, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles\, and the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen\, MI. \nIn the past few years Dr. Moore’s performance schedule included concerts at various locations in the Pittsburgh area and at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine and the Riverside Church in New York City. As a choral accompanist\, he has been the featured organist with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh\, where his performance was described as “lucid and often glorious” by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Visitor's Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Join us and invite your family\, friends\, and neighbors for worship as we celebrate Visitor’s Sunday. Following worship\, everyone is welcome to attend our Church Life Sampler in the Social Hall. \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Youth Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This week\, our Senior High youth will lead us during worship! This special service is an annual tradition at ELPC where we celebrate the gifts and accomplishments of our youth while praising God for the work of the Holy Spirit upon and through the youth of our church. \nThe youth have written the entire liturgy\, selected the songs\, and will lead us in worship. Graduating Seniors will share their faith stories\, and receive a blessing by the congregation as they prepare for the next steps in their respective life journeys. This year\, students completing third grade will be presented with a gift of a Bible from the church\, that they might be nurtured in God’s word. \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Pentecost Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Pentecost is the annual event in which we celebrate the birth of the early Christian church by remembering how the Holy Spirit inspired the first disciples. We wear red as a symbol of the fire that touched women and men that day and re-commit ourselves to sharing the good news of Christ. \nThis year\, Pentecost Sunday\, May 20\, is extra-special\, because we will confirm a group of young people and celebrate the final stage of our year-long building renovation project. The bulk of the work is finally done! While final tests and touch-ups are completed\, we will celebrate the excellent renovations and improvements through special words\, music\, and events. Mike Tomaro and his jazz combo from Duquesne University will be with us during worship\, and then there will be opportunities for you to tour the building\, hear from hosts at different locations about the improvements\, and offer your own prayers for God’s architectural blessings. \nJoin us for this great day as we celebrate our past\, rejoice in the present improvements\, and look forward to beginning our 200th year of ministry in East Liberty! \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Passion Sunday
DESCRIPTION:This service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service.

SUMMARY:Sanctuary Worship: Gifts of Women
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special Sanctuary worship service as we celebrate the Gifts of Women. \nEach year\, in partnership with Presbyterian Women\, ELPC selects a Sunday close to International Women’s Day (Thursday\, March 8)\, during which we lift up the gifts of women and acknowledge the challenges that women throughout the world continue to face. \nThe Rev. Heather Schoenewolf will preach and her sermon will be titled “Pathway to Peace: Refusing to be Silenced.” In conjunction with ELPC’s Lenten sermon series on the “Voices of Peace\,” Pastor Heather will feature the peacemaking work of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. Our service will include women liturgists\, ushers\, and greeters. \n\nThis service is held in the Sanctuary on the first floor\, with an organ prelude before the service. We extend a warm welcome to our Latino friends and include several prayers in our service bulletin in English and Spanish. This is ELPC’s largest service\, offering a traditional worship service with thought-provoking sermons\, and the music of our Chancel Choir and organ to reinforce the spirit of praise and reverence.
