DESCRIPTION:Sound and Spirituality: Exploring Traditions\nAs we continue exploring the role sound plays in our spirituality\, the Spiritual Life Committee is offering two interfaith programs in March that focus on sound and its use in worship and prayer. Both programs follow Sanctuary worship and feature a light lunch. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience or musical ability is needed. \nIn our first program on Sun.\, March 4\, Michael Dodin will share insights and research into the special nature of sound as it relates to consciousness\, creative expression\, and physical morphology. You also will have an opportunity to share in musical meditations/prayers using the Names of God in the vibrations of the original biblical languages. \nAlso\, make plans to join us for our second program\, Kirtan with Ashely O’Hara. \n\nAbout our presenter\nMichael Dodin currently works with the Academy for Future Science (a U.N. Non-Governmental Organization) as director of multimedia\, musician\, audio engineer\, and U.N. youth delegate. He studied Western classical music and composition on a variety of instruments\, as well as classical Indian music and percussion on the Tabla. In 2015\, he performed at the Parliament of World Religions in Salt Lake City. Michael’s musical compositions were featured in The Power of One Voice—a documentary by Mark Dixon\, which details the life and work of environmental scientist Rachel Carson (also the author of the book Silent Spring).

SUMMARY:Hannah Price Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:ELPC is proud to host a month-long photo exhibition by noted photographer Hannah Price. Her works will be on display in the Second Floor Parlor daily from 9 am–7 pm\, until Fri.\, June 23. \nHer series\, Cursed by Night\, focuses on the world of darkness in which African American males are unfortunately restricted and too often cursed. Darkness can distort faces\, causing people to be seen as threats or making them invisible. Come view these works and see how they challenge the power of night. \nBorn in 1986\, Price is internationally known for her project City of Brotherly Love (2009–2012)\, a series of photographs of the men who catcalled her on the streets of Philadelphia. In 2014\, Price graduated from the Yale School of Art MFA Photography program. Over the past six years\, Price’s photos have been displayed in several cities across the U.S.\, with a few residing in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

DESCRIPTION:“The world is charged with the grandeur of God.”—Gerald Manley Hopkins \nJoin the Spiritual Life Committee for a rich and restful day “Creating God.”  We will explore images of God in art and poetry and then be lead through creative exercises to get in touch with and express our own image of God.  Leading us will be: Dr. Brent House\, Assistant Professor of English at California University of Pennsylvania\, who teaches students to more creatively read and write poetry; Elaine Wertheim\, an art historian who teaches both in Pittsburgh and at the Chautauqua Institution; and Margaret Baco\, a local artist and spiritual seeker who uses expressive art practices as a vehicle for exploring the relationship between self and the Divine. \nA continental breakfast and simple lunch will be served.  All materials are provided. DESCRIPTION:The Justice Committee will host an informational meeting in the second floor Parlor with three local prison ministries\, Amachi Pittsburgh\, the Foundation of HOPE\, and Jail Worship at St. Andrew Lutheran Church. This gathering will assess the level of support for a prison ministry within ELPC and neighboring faith communities\, and start exploring partnership opportunities with these existing programs. Registration begins at 8:30 am. \n\nAmachi Pittsburgh empowers young people to overcome the challenges of parental incarceration through mentoring\, family strengthening\, and leadership development.\nThe Foundation of HOPE seeks to empower incarcerated and released individuals to restore their relationship with God\, rebuild their lives\, and reconcile to their communities.\nThrough its Jail Worship ministry\, St. Andrew Lutheran Church sends a team to lead monthly worship at the Allegheny County Jail to help bring hope to those in need and to remind the congregation members to make certain that they are striving to “Love Everyone Exclude No One.”

Diane founded Bethany Hospice in 2005. \nJulie W. Childers\, MD\, Director of Supportive and Palliative Care at UPMC Presbyterian\nDr. Childers completed training in palliative care in 2009. She is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics at the University of Pittsburgh and has an outpatient palliative care clinic at Hillman Cancer Center.
