DESCRIPTION:Our Mission Board Committees are hosting a Letters to Legislators event in the Social Hall immediately following worship on Sunday\, August 27. Participants will have an opportunity to write to legislators advocating for action on a variety of social justice issues—including driving privileges for immigrants; fair housing and nondiscrimination policies; environmental protections; prisoners’ rights; gun violence; and more. \nLearn about these important issues and the role your elected officials and other leaders have in making and changing related laws and policies. Your voice and your calls for action make a difference. Sample letters and emails will be provided and a light lunch will be served. DESCRIPTION:As we continue our congregation’s anti-racism work and to better understand one another—as well as our shared and separate cultures—the Mission Board and Mission Committees invite you to celebrate Black History Month. A luncheon will be held following Sanctuary worship\, featuring traditional African-American cuisine and opportunities to discuss African-American traditions and Malawian culture. A $5 donation is suggested. \nWe also will unveil a commemorative plaque in the Balaka Room\, memorializing the 25th anniversary of our partnership with Balaka Church of Central Africa Presbyterian in Malawi. SUMMARY:Giving Thanks Feast
DESCRIPTION:Our “Giving Thanks” Feast will be held following Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, November 24. This year\, let’s celebrate fellowship and give thanks for each other by bringing a dish that represents you! It could be your favorite dish\, a dish from your culture or an old family recipe. You will have a chance to read about other’s dishes and tell about your own by filling out a label for your dish. Labels can be filled out the day of the feast\, or can be picked up at the church (by the information screen in the Highland hallway). A main course and salad will be provided. \nVolunteers are Needed\nOur meal together in November is one of our largest attended meals here at ELPC. We could not host such a great time together without all of you! There are different times throughout this day to volunteer. DESCRIPTION:The ninth season of ELPC’s Cathedral Concerts series continues with Pittsburgh saxophone legend Mike Tomaro and his combo performing jazz favorites. Joining Mike will be Max Leake on piano\, Paul Thompson on bass\, and Tom Wendt on drums. The concert will feature a “Sweet Jazz” theme\, and the audience is encouraged to bring treats to share! \nTomaro—an accomplished composer\, arranger\, and educator—currently serves as director of the Jazz Studies program at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University. \nThe concert is free\, but a freewill offering will be received. DESCRIPTION:Do you want to find out how to switch to all renewable electricity? Are you trying to decide whether solar panels would work on your house? Do you know how to measure your carbon footprint? \nTo find answers to these questions and other energy-use matters\, you are invited to attend a Renewable Energy Fair following Sanctuary worship. Representatives from renewable energy suppliers will be available to answer your questions and help you make the switch. There also will be a solar energy adviser. Please bring your electric bill. \nAnother important action is to calculate your carbon footprint. Information and help will be provided\, and as well as an explanation of the carbon offset concept. For example\, offset your air travel by paying into a project that reduces CO2 emissions by an equivalent amount. If you know your yearly electricity use (in kWh\, from the electric company)\, your yearly gas use (in MCF or therms\, from the gas company)\, and approximate annual miles traveled\, the Environmental Team can help you determine your carbon footprint. \nA light lunch will be provided.
