DESCRIPTION:The Justice Committee will host a screening of the documentary\, My Name is Pauli Murray\, following worship on Sunday\, August 13\, in the Social Hall. A light lunch will be provided. \nPauli Murray was a writer\, activist\, legal theorist\, and episcopal priest\, and was involved in articulating key legal arguments of the Civil Rights Movement. Born Anne Pauline Murray in 1910\, they changed their birth name to “Pauli” in the 1930s\, a groundbreaking challenge at that time. In 1944\, Murray challenged the “separate” part of the Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896) Supreme Court decision as a violation of the 13th and 14th Amendments\, eventually forming the basis for Brown vs. The Board of Education (1954) case. Murray also was influential in the work of both Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Thurgood Marshall. In 1977\, Murray became the first African American woman in the U.S. to become an Episcopal priest. Following the presentation\, there will be a panel discussion with LGBTQIA+ clergy in the Greater Pittsburgh region\, who will discuss the future of Christianity and the LGBTQIA+ community. \nOur congregation is a proud participant in LAMP (LGBTQIA+ Affirming Ministries of Pittsburgh)\, along with other affirming Presbyterian Churches in Pittsburgh. We are excited to again celebrate Pride in Pittsburgh. While there are many Pride events sponsored by different groups and in different neighborhoods\, the two Pride events LAMP will be participating in this year are: \n\nPittsburgh Pride March and Parade\, coordinated by QBurgh on behalf of Trans YOUniting and the Pittsburgh Pride Group on Saturday\, June 3\, in downtown and the North Shore.\nWe also will participate in People’s Pride PGH March and Festival on Sunday\, June 25\, in Swissvale.\n\nKeep a lookout for more details that will be posted near the Highland entrance monitor\, including parade maps and times. At the same time\, legislators and the Biden Administration are to release $369 billion for “Energy Security and Climate Change\,” part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, offering rebates\, tax incentives\, and other programs to help households conserve energy and to electrify. \nWhat is in the programs and how can you take advantage of them? SUMMARY:Reckoning with Race: The History & Persistence of White Supremacy in the Church
DESCRIPTION:The Facing Systemic Racism Committee invites you to a new series that’s designed to provide a big picture overview of how Christianity invented\, codified\, perpetuated\, and benefited from white supremacy. Led by Dr. Brock Bahler\, we will consider not only how we continue to be implicated in this history\, but also how we can lament\, respond to\, and develop reparations for this injustice. The program will consist of a lecture and small group discussion. \nOur first session will be on Sunday\, October 30\, during the Church School hour\, 9:45 am. He is member of the Open Door Presbyterian Church in Garfield.

SUMMARY:Community Sing for Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:Experience the joy of choral singing as we join our voices together for social justice on Sunday\, October 16\, 1:30–2:30 pm! The Renaissance City Choir (RCC)\, as well as ELPC’s LGBTQ Ministry and Justice Committee invite singers of all ages and skill levels to attend this community sing event in the Social Hall. Masks are required regardless of vaccination status. \nGuided by Kym Scott\, RCC artistic director\, attendees will learn and sing simple—yet powerful—choral pieces with a focus on social justice\, along with some familiar justice songs. \nRCC affirms and celebrates LGBTQIA+ identity through the unifying power of music\, and rehearses and performs at ELPC as artists-in-residence. \nPlease contact president@rccpittsburgh.com with questions\, or accessibility@rccpittsburgh.com with any access concerns.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us following Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, May 15\, for a farewell celebration in honor of our departing Senior Pastor Randy Bush\, his wife Beth\, and children Ian and Charlotte. \nWe’ll gather in the Social Hall for fellowship and to say “thank you” and send our prayers as they begin a new journey in their ministry and lives. \nA box will be available to collect cards\, sharing reflections and best wishes for the Bushes.
