SUMMARY:Mission Board Film Series: My Name is Pauli Murray
DESCRIPTION:The Justice Committee will host a screening of the documentary\, My Name is Pauli Murray\, following worship on Sunday\, August 13\, in the Social Hall. A light lunch will be provided. \nPauli Murray was a writer\, activist\, legal theorist\, and episcopal priest\, and was involved in articulating key legal arguments of the Civil Rights Movement. Born Anne Pauline Murray in 1910\, they changed their birth name to “Pauli” in the 1930s\, a groundbreaking challenge at that time. In 1944\, Murray challenged the “separate” part of the Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896) Supreme Court decision as a violation of the 13th and 14th Amendments\, eventually forming the basis for Brown vs. The Board of Education (1954) case. Murray also was influential in the work of both Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Thurgood Marshall. In 1977\, Murray became the first African American woman in the U.S. to become an Episcopal priest. Murray died of cancer in 1985. The Episcopal Church sainted Murray in 2012. \nEmail Carol Chonoska for more details.

SUMMARY:Mission Board Film Series: The Human Element
DESCRIPTION:The Environmental Team of the Justice Committee will host a screening of and discussion on the film\, The Human Element\, following worship on Sunday\, August 6\, in the Social Hall. A light lunch will be provided. \nIn the film\, National Geographic photographer James Balog takes us through a journey of the “four elements”—water\, air\, fire\, and earth—to see how we’ve modified the natural world around us\, and in turn\, how we’re making life for ourselves harder in the process. The Human Element features subjects who are often overlooked victims of climate change. He argues that humans are not apart from nature. We are the fifth element\, and we can help bring the whole system back into balance. \nEmail Nancy Heastings if you have questions.

SUMMARY:Pride History Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join the ELPC Justice Committee for a Pride History Presentation following Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, May 28. A light lunch will be provided. \nThis presentation will be led by Jason Van Ness and will examine the LGBTQIA+ equal rights movement and Pride events over the past 50 years. The presentation will highlight key social and political events that have dovetailed with Pride events in the past\, and considerations for organizing efforts moving forward. Following the presentation\, there will be a panel discussion with LGBTQIA+ clergy in the Greater Pittsburgh region\, who will discuss the future of Christianity and the LGBTQIA+ community. \nOur congregation is a proud participant in LAMP (LGBTQIA+ Affirming Ministries of Pittsburgh)\, along with other affirming Presbyterian Churches in Pittsburgh. We are excited to again celebrate Pride in Pittsburgh. While there are many Pride events sponsored by different groups and in different neighborhoods\, the two Pride events LAMP will be participating in this year are: \n\nPittsburgh Pride March and Parade\, coordinated by QBurgh on behalf of Trans YOUniting and the Pittsburgh Pride Group on Saturday\, June 3\, in downtown and the North Shore.\nWe also will participate in People’s Pride PGH March and Festival on Sunday\, June 25\, in Swissvale.\n\nKeep a lookout for more details that will be posted near the Highland entrance monitor\, including parade maps and times. Come out and celebrate while we share God’s love with all of God’s people!

SUMMARY:ELPC Matters: The More You Know About Times\, Cycles and Seasons of Transition
DESCRIPTION:As we journey through this time of transition at ELPC\, it is important to know that the changes and transitions we are going through are normal and even good and healthy. In fact\, all organisms and organizations go through periods and cycles of life and death\, fruitfulness\, and dormancy—and even Jesus says death and letting go are necessary for new life to come. This is often difficult for humans and organizations who operate out of a more mechanistic mindset. So how can we can navigate these seasons with energy\, intelligence\, imagination\, and love amidst the change and feelings of instability? It is our hope and belief that this transition can propel us to revitalize\, renew and redevelop for the hopeful and vibrant future at ELPC. \nJoin Pastor BJ on Sunday\, April 30\, 9:45–10:45 am\, in the Social Hall for a time of teaching\, reflection\, and conversation as we seek to navigate this time at ELPC together.

DESCRIPTION:As we navigate this season of transition together\, ELPC is offering a series of informational sessions to broaden congregational awareness of different aspects of our life together that may seem to be more behind-the-scenes\, but which are fundamental to how we engage our faith in community together. \nTopics will address Frequently Asked Questions about church life and operations—starting first with topics that seem to be particularly confusing or anxiety producing in times of pastoral transition. \nOur first session in this series will be held on Sunday\, April 2\, during the Church School hour\, 9:45–10:45 am\, and will shed light on Understanding Pastor’s Compensation. The Rev. Brian Wallace\, associate minister and acting head of staff at Pittsburgh Presbytery\, will present this session\, along with the leadership of our Human Resources chairs and director of Administration and Finance. Participants can join in person in the Social Hall or on Zoom. \nFuture Sessions will be publicized in the weekly news flashes and Reaching Out\, and will cover topics such as: Understanding Our Endowment\, Who’s Who on Our Staff\, Finding Ourselves in ELPC’s History as We Envision the Future\, and What Does it Take to Care for the Cathedral of Hope? SUMMARY:The History and Persistence of Racism Within the Christian Church
DESCRIPTION:The Facing Systemic Racism Committee invites you to join us on Sunday\, January 29\, for the second part of our series\, The History and Persistence of Racism within the Christian Church\, led by University of Pittsburgh professor and lecturer\, Dr. Brock Bahler. \nComments following the first presentation included: \n\nI’ve been Christian all my life. Why didn’t I know this history?\nWhat else don’t I know about my faith in general as well as the Presbyterian denomination?\nHow is ELPC implicated in that history? What now?\n\nDr. Bahler will speak to the intentional codification of racism within the church and how the church continues to perpetuate—and benefits from—white supremacy. His lecture will be followed by a small group discussion of the content\, as well as consideration of next steps for ELPC. \nThe presentation will be held during the Church School hour\, immediately following Journey worship in the Social Hall and on Zoom. \nJOIN VIA ZOOM

SUMMARY:Reducing Energy Bills & New Incentives
DESCRIPTION:Energy prices have gone up sharply within the last half year\, and are impacting many households this winter. At the same time\, legislators and the Biden Administration are to release $369 billion for “Energy Security and Climate Change\,” part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, offering rebates\, tax incentives\, and other programs to help households conserve energy and to electrify. \nWhat is in the programs and how can you take advantage of them? Join the Environmental Team of Justice Committee following worship on Sunday\, January 22\, to learn about the actions we can take right away or plan to take later in 2023\, when the remaining regulations are finalized. \nOverall\, 42% of our energy-related emissions stem from decisions we make around our kitchen tables: what kind of transportation we use\, how we heat the air and water in our homes\, cook our food\, and dry our clothes. The only way to remove these emissions is to have our homes run on machines with plugs\, not pipes. Taking these steps is important for the planet to reduce global warming and our long-term energy costs. IRA has been called the single largest climate investment in American history. Come hear how you can be a part of this change. \nJoin us in the Social Hall or on Zoom (Passcode: 562814). A light lunch will be offered. Email Nancy Heastings with any questions. \nJOIN VIA ZOOM

SUMMARY:Telling the Truth with Dr. George Yancy
DESCRIPTION:Truth telling is a basic moral value. We interpret it to be the communication of what is known to be believed with no deceit or falseness. How then\, do we factor in unintentional or intentional self-deceit\, bias\, and prejudice? How do we account for long-held false narratives that we are exposed to everyday in private and public agendas that suppress the “whole truth and nothing but the truth?” \nFollowing Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, November 14\, the Facing Systemic Racism Committee is honored to have Dr. George Yancy help us consider these questions. Our discussion will consider the courage\, vulnerability\, painful listening\, dangers of truth telling\, and the importance of trust and love in teaching truth. Participants may view the presentation in the Social Hall or via Zoom at 12:30 pm. \nPrior to our discussion\, please read a letter by Dr. Yancy\, titled “Dear White America\,” which was originally published in The New York Times\, December 24\, 2015. \nClick the button below to join via Zoom or call in by dialing 312.626.6799 and entering meeting ID 872 4009 7178 and passcode 932158 when prompted. \nJoin via Zoom \n\nAbout Dr. George Yancy \nDr. Yancy is professor of philosophy at Emory University and is a distinguished scholar at Dartmouth College. SUMMARY:Pentecost Journey Worship
DESCRIPTION:Pentecost is an annual church event that marks the end of the Easter season and the birth of the early Christian church. On this special day\, we remember how the Holy Spirit inspired the first disciples. Join us in worship and wear red as a symbol of the fire that touched women and men that day\, as we re-commit ourselves to sharing the good news of Christ. \n\nJoin us for a lively service of spirit\, hope\, and praise in which we encounter God’s word in a fresh\, compelling way. The blending of contemporary music\, Gospel songs and hymns\, introspective worship and interactive communal praise helps to reflect the diverse\, creative spirit that is at the heart of ELPC. The service is led by the Rev. Patrice Fowler-Searcy\, the Rev. Heather T. Schoenewolf\, and the Rev. Dr. Randall K. Bush. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP SERVICES HERE.
