SUMMARY:Reducing Energy Bills & New Incentives
DESCRIPTION:Energy prices have gone up sharply within the last half year\, and are impacting many households this winter. At the same time\, legislators and the Biden Administration are to release $369 billion for “Energy Security and Climate Change\,” part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, offering rebates\, tax incentives\, and other programs to help households conserve energy and to electrify. \nWhat is in the programs and how can you take advantage of them? Join the Environmental Team of Justice Committee following worship on Sunday\, January 22\, to learn about the actions we can take right away or plan to take later in 2023\, when the remaining regulations are finalized. \nOverall\, 42% of our energy-related emissions stem from decisions we make around our kitchen tables: what kind of transportation we use\, how we heat the air and water in our homes\, cook our food\, and dry our clothes. The only way to remove these emissions is to have our homes run on machines with plugs\, not pipes. Taking these steps is important for the planet to reduce global warming and our long-term energy costs. IRA has been called the single largest climate investment in American history. Come hear how you can be a part of this change. \nJoin us in the Social Hall or on Zoom (Passcode: 562814). A light lunch will be offered. Email Nancy Heastings with any questions. \nJOIN VIA ZOOM

SUMMARY:Telling the Truth with Dr. George Yancy
DESCRIPTION:Truth telling is a basic moral value. We interpret it to be the communication of what is known to be believed with no deceit or falseness. How then\, do we factor in unintentional or intentional self-deceit\, bias\, and prejudice? How do we account for long-held false narratives that we are exposed to everyday in private and public agendas that suppress the “whole truth and nothing but the truth?” \nFollowing Sanctuary worship on Sunday\, November 14\, the Facing Systemic Racism Committee is honored to have Dr. George Yancy help us consider these questions. Our discussion will consider the courage\, vulnerability\, painful listening\, dangers of truth telling\, and the importance of trust and love in teaching truth. Participants may view the presentation in the Social Hall or via Zoom at 12:30 pm. \nPrior to our discussion\, please read a letter by Dr. Yancy\, titled “Dear White America\,” which was originally published in The New York Times\, December 24\, 2015. \nClick the button below to join via Zoom or call in by dialing 312.626.6799 and entering meeting ID 872 4009 7178 and passcode 932158 when prompted. \nJoin via Zoom \n\nAbout Dr. George Yancy \nDr. Yancy is professor of philosophy at Emory University and is a distinguished scholar at Dartmouth College. He is a revered author and speaker on racism in America and the impact of white backlash in conversations about race.

SUMMARY:Pentecost Journey Worship
DESCRIPTION:Pentecost is an annual church event that marks the end of the Easter season and the birth of the early Christian church. On this special day\, we remember how the Holy Spirit inspired the first disciples. Join us in worship and wear red as a symbol of the fire that touched women and men that day\, as we re-commit ourselves to sharing the good news of Christ. \n\nJoin us for a lively service of spirit\, hope\, and praise in which we encounter God’s word in a fresh\, compelling way. The blending of contemporary music\, Gospel songs and hymns\, introspective worship and interactive communal praise helps to reflect the diverse\, creative spirit that is at the heart of ELPC. The service is led by the Rev. Patrice Fowler-Searcy\, the Rev. Heather T. Schoenewolf\, and the Rev. Dr. Randall K. Bush. \nSEE DETAILS FOR THIS WEEK’S WORSHIP SERVICES HERE.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Panel on the Use of Sound in Faith
DESCRIPTION:Our Christian life—like that of virtually every other faith—is saturated with sound. Bells call us to worship\, we sing our praises to God\, and are moved by beautiful anthems to the accompaniment of organ\, piano\, and other instruments. We clap our appreciation\, utter aloud prayers and liturgy\, and\, of course\, we listen to sermons\, teachers\, and the words of others. \nAll of these sounds have an effect upon who we are\, as well as what and how we believe. Scientists study the actual physical effects of differing sound waves on matter\, and mystics have long acknowledged the impact of sound\, including the sound of silence on the open heart. \nJoin the Spiritual Life Committee in the Social Hall as we explore the science and spiritual dimensions of sound in our own tradition and that of other faiths.
