HAT Co – Hope Academy Theater Company
This audition-only company provides a more intensive, ensemble- and performance-based experience for students in grades 6 through 12 who are interested in the performing arts. HAT Co members are encouraged to make their own work, as they learn to think about and respect dance, theater and music as art forms — and themselves as artists and creators.
This program is uniquely suited for teens who are motivated to study and perform across a range of disciplines; and who have an interest in being part of an inclusive, supportive, non-competitive group. Ensemble members receive individual, class and ensemble training in acting, singing, dance and instrumental music. Selected students rehearse and perform as part of a dance ensemble; another select group rehearses and performs as part of a rock band.
The theater ensemble participates in the Pittsburgh Public Theater Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest and the August Wilson Monologue Contest; and each year they present a showcase performance. HAT Co has performed at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, The Warhol Museum, WYEP’s Summer Music Festival, and Three Rivers Arts Festival.
Students are required to make a yearlong commitment and to sign a contract indicating their ability and willingness to attend all scheduled classes, private lessons, rehearsals and performances. Classes and ensembles meet all day on Saturdays, and after school on Tuesdays; private music lessons and acting coaching, for HAT Co ensemble members, take place after school during the week.
HAT Co ensemble members spend 8 to 10 hours in group classes and private lessons/coaching each week; plus additional time for rehearsals and performances throughout the year. Instrumentalists who are only in HAT Co band spend 3 hours on Saturdays, plus extra rehearsals (Fridays as scheduled) and performances.
Individual auditions will be scheduled for students interested in becoming part of the ensemble. Complete this online HAT Co Application, and we will get back to you to schedule yours! All returning students receive private voice or instrument lessons. New students receive private lessons based on their audition. Most of the company members are selected in September, but new members will be added throughout the year, based on the needs of the ensemble .
