Here’s what’s happening in worship this week.
Worship Services
Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Revisit the Journey. Paul Seif, our intern from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, will preach from Luke 24:36–49.
Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach. His sermon will be entitled “Saving Salvation: What Kind of World?” based on Romans 12:1–3.
Taizé | Wednesday, at 7 pm
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. The Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead worship. We will not have an after-Taizé class this week.
Christian Education Classes
We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.
Faith 101 | McKelvy Room
This week, Liz Gonda will lead our Faith 101 Lenten series, with our lesson, Cross: Where God Is. What is it about us that makes us always choose the bedazzled cross and not the actual one?
Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
We will continue our series on Dr. Martin Luther King’s life, teachings, and prophecies. The series will consider the early influences and choices that turned Dr. Martin Luther King into a modern-day prophet. We will examine Dr. King’s prophetic calls for justice to be done, echoing the Biblical message of God’s care for the poor and outcasts of society.
This week, Jim Russ leads our lesson, Where is God Calling us?, and focus on King‘s last book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community. King identified White Privilege, Black Power, and Militarism as impediments to true integration and a more just society.
Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit (Psalm 51:12). Restoration, joy, salvation, sustenance, willingness, and spirit; all these are for the asking—gifts of God in Christ for all. The Lenten readings for March can nourish us and witness to these gifts. Drop in and join us on the journey.
This week, our readings are Numbers 21:4–9; Psalm 107:1–3, 17–22; Hebrews 5:5–10; and John 12:20–33.
Seekers | Room 234
In 1942, C. S. Lewis’ Christian apologetic novel, Screwtape Letters, was published. Written as an exchange of correspondence between senior Demon Screwtape and his nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter, this satirical novel explores many Christian theological issues, such as temptation and resistance to it, faith, and theodicy. Pastor Heather will discuss this text and the theological themes it addresses.
Soul Food | Room 244 and Pastor’s Conference Room
We will continue discussing our Lenten text, Wondrous Encounters—Scripture for Lent, by Richard Rohr. New participants are always welcome!
