Here’s what’s happening in worship this week.
Worship Services
Journey Worship | Sunday, at 8:45 am
An interactive, energetic service for those seeking a fresh encounter with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Our theme this month is Revisit the Journey. The Rev. Patrice Fowler-Searcy will preach from Mark 8:27–28.
Sanctuary Worship | Sunday, at 11 am
Our largest service, with music from the Chancel Choir and an organ prelude prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Randy Bush will preach. His sermon will be entitled “Saving Salvation: It’s All About Grace” based on 2 Corinthians 12:1–10.
Taizé | Wednesday, at 7 pm
An hour-long service including sung prayers; simple, beautiful music; a time of silence; spoken and silent prayers; and an opportunity for individual prayer and anointing. The Rev. Mary Lynn Callahan will lead worship. This week’s after-Taizé class will feature celebrations.
Christian Education Classes
We offer Christian Education classes for persons of all ages, from infancy through adulthood, on Sundays from 9:45–10:45 am. Click the links for adult class descriptions and children and youth offerings.
Faith 101 | McKelvy Room
This week, Paul Seif will lead our Faith 101 Lenten series, with our lesson, Bible: A Book Like No Other. Is it crazy for me to hope that, through years of rereading this Bible, that I might one day get to see a bluer sky?
Contemporaries | Second Floor Parlor
We will continue our series on Dr. Martin Luther King’s life, teachings, and prophecies. The series will consider the early influences and choices that turned Dr. Martin Luther King into a modern-day prophet. We will examine Dr. King’s prophetic calls for justice to be done, echoing the Biblical message of God’s care for the poor and outcasts of society.
This week, Drew Smith, professor of urban ministries at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, leads our lesson, How Can the Church Heed God’s Call for Justice?, and cover Dr. King’s view that power, poverty, and income inequality are not just a racial problem, but a justice problem. He will connect these views to contemporary protests against injustice in the political-economic system.
Journey With Scripture | Second Floor Library
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit (Psalm 51:12). Restoration, joy, salvation, sustenance, willingness, and spirit; all these are for the asking—gifts of God in Christ for all. The Lenten readings for March can nourish us and witness to these gifts. Drop in and join us on the journey.
This week, our readings are Jeremiah 31:31–34; Psalm 51:1–12; 1 Peter 3:18–22; and Mark 1:9–15.
Seekers | Room 234
Before Christianity was introduced into West Africa, animist religion was practiced. Today, people in West Africa maintain these traditions and beliefs, with an emphasis on the importance of spirits, alongside Christianity. Gwen Puza will discuss the religions of the West African countries she visited (Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso), including videos of Voodoo and mask ceremonies, and Christian church services.
Soul Food | Room 244 and Pastor’s Conference Room
We will continue discussing our Lenten text, Wondrous Encounters—Scripture for Lent, by Richard Rohr. New participants are always welcome!
